You know that all the hype you get from theSummerlinians and Green Valley-ans, (whichis actually Henderson) is nothing.They’re standing on dirt where horse dung used to be. Hendersonof old was joked about as a backwater outpost and Green Valley didn’texist for a good portion of our lives.When you’re one of those people, you know who Sergio Franchi is,how he was one of the biggest stars on the Las Vegas Strip year afteryear. You know that Buddy Hackett always played the Sahara. You knowthat “tomorrow” was when the diet would take place at one of the firstVegas buffets - The Silver Slipper.You remember the fountain at the Tropicana and always looked whenyou drove by Caesars to try and see the exact location that Evel Knievelcrashed his motorcycle into a wall after jumping over the fountains.You remember the heyday of high kitsch, the world-famous andnever to re-appear 99 cent shrimp cocktail, the free cigarettes at the21 tables and the understanding by the world that Las Vegas (in thepoorer quarters anyway) was filled with blue-haired grandmotherswith cigarettes dangling from their lips and blackened fingertips.Back then you could tell a stranger that you live in the penthouseof Caesar’s Palace and they would believe you because nobody reallybelieved that somebody (anybody) was actually from Las Vegas. With a36Sweet Enough DreamsDecember 2019professional football team coming I suppose we don’t have to convinceanyone of this anymore.You know and still probably love Gus Guiffre who was always on onetelevision channel or another. You remember the giant Sultan on theDunes Golf Course overlooking the cars on I-15. You are one of thosepeople who remember that the original MGM showed old films whereyou could sit on couches and order cocktail service while watchingClark Gable or Jean Harlow.You remember how freezing cold it used to get at UNLV footballgames at the Silver Bowl; something that is unimaginable today whichshould be an eye opener for people.In this simpler time there were many more unobstructed views of thestrip from a distance. You would spend summer nights watching thespotlights go back and forth across the sky.If you were to go out to dinner as a local you might first consider TheVenetian, Chateau Vegas, The Golden Steer, Battista’s Hole in the Wall,or if you wanted to really do it up we all knew that you would go to TheDome of the Sea at the Dunes.Neon was the bringer of the message back then. Neon tube-bendersturned the Las Vegas Strip into an exhibition of Americana that is nowrecognized as being important as evidenced by the Neon Museum today.The digital displays now are definitely impressive, but at the sametime they also feel somewhat elitist. Half of the thrill that comes fromwatching them is that such a giant TV sure must be expensive. Neonsimply said “welcome” in a warm and fun way.We were always in the public eye. We even made it into story lines inthe cartoons like The Jetsons and The Flintstones. The Rat Pack werekings and Elvis was the king. You could see any of them perform solothroughout the year.Us locals, of course, were turning off our lights as the stars came outat night, as the old song said, and dreamed sweet enough dreams.Joey Kantor is a journalist and novelist.
