Kardemir begins producing train wheelsTurkish iron and steel giant Kardemirhas started producing indigenoustrain wheels to prevent the use ofimports, the head of the companysaid.“Turkey will stop the import of railwaywheels in a short period. We willproduce 150,000 wheels and becomean exporter within two years,”Hüseyin Soykan, the general managerof the firm, told Anadolu Agency (AA).Only 15 companies produce railwaywheels globally, which need hightechnology and engineering; Kardemirbecame the 16th, he underlined.Soykan said: “A train wheelmanufactured from half-ton specialsteel weighs 370 kilograms. Beforewe started to produce, its costwas around 1,000 euros [$1,112].Currently, its cost is around 600euros.”He also stressed that the firm willbe able to produce 200,000 wheelsannually.Kardemir aims to manufactureimported products to boost thecountry’s industry and economy, henoted.December 201928
