LAND OF MYSTERY
The Plain of Jars in central Laos’ Xiangkhouang
province is the third location in the country to be
given the UNESCO World Heritage Site status after
Luang Prabang and Angkor’s Vat Phou. Known locally
as Thong Hai Hin, the site gets its name from its
thousands of tubular megalithic stone jars, which
are believed to have served either as funeral urns
or food storage containers some 1,500 to 2,000
years ago.
There are as many as 11 separate places
where the ancient sandstone and granite jars are
concentrated in Xiangkhouang’s districts of Paek,
Phaxay, Phoukoud and Kham. whc.unesco.org
