Publisher’s Note
We had heard about it, but it seemed so
far and so unlikely it was going to affect us
in the same way, yet COVID-19 arrived in
the United States with the same devastating
force it ravaged the populations of China
and Italy. Once again our beloved city is
receiving national attention due to a crisis.
This nondiscriminatory virus has impacted
the health of many individuals around us,
but the measures we have taken to prevent
its rapid spread will impact the economy of so many families in the
country, and certainly in our region.
One of the reality checkpoints for me was the closure of the
schools. Going into my children’s school at a designated day and
time to pick up their belongings was such a surreal experience. The
disruption of life as we know it has been an intense lesson that I don’t
believe we were ready to learn.
April is VIVA NOLA Magazine’s 24 issue, which marks our 2-year
anniversary. Our plans to celebrate our second year and the events
we were planning to launch for the 2-year mark have been postponed
indefinitely, just as major events we love had to find a new date. Like
many of you, we are adapting to the changes and shifting the way
in which we do business to better serve our clients and to expand
our services in an emergency-proof way. We have been diligent in
becoming that link that connects our communities, and we continue
to fulfill our mission of communicating relevant information to our
bilingual audience. Our digital services have been our strongest asset
during this time. Vivanolamag.com has gotten incredible traffic and
our social media has been invaluable.
After weighing in on the situation, we decided to do a digitalonly
magazine for April 2020, as we anticipate people will remain at
home for most of the month. We are committed to maintaining our
audience reach by increasing our digital footprint, which will also be
beneficial to our advertisers. We understand the strains businesses
are feeling, and as a small business ourselves, we deal with our own
challenges, but we have chosen to focus on gratefulness and on
putting our resources and skills to serve the community and our
supporters in the best possible ways. On this issue, you will find the
story of one of my favorite New Orleans artists Brandan “BMike”
Odums. His exhibition at the Newcomb Art Museum at Tulane
University was on view through May, and hopefully, it will be extended
after we flatten the Coronavirus curve because it truly is a sight to be
seen by all. We have included a list of economic resources in response
to COVID-19 as well as helpful tips for wellness and entertainment
during social distancing. We did not forget about Jesus and have
included Easter content too. We are missing our calendar of events,
but we are hopeful that we have a very busy one for months to come
so that we can reactivate the economy and go back to being the fun
wonderful city that we are!
We are here for you. Please follow us on our social media channels
and tell your friends about us. We appreciate your readership and
loyalty. Let us know how else we can be at your service.

Process for Accessing SBA’s Coronavirus
(COVID-19) Disaster Relief Lending
The U.S. Small Business Administration is
offering designated states and territories
low-interest federal disaster loans for
working capital to small businesses suffering
substantial economic injury as a result
of the Coronavirus (COVID-19). Upon a
request received from a state’s or territory’s
Governor, SBA will issue under its own
authority, as provided by the Coronavirus
Preparedness and Response Supplemental
Appropriations Act that was recently signed
by the President, an Economic Injury Disaster
Loan declaration.
Any such Economic Injury Disaster Loan
assistance declaration issued by the SBA
makes loans available to small businesses
and private, non-profit organizations in
designated areas of a state or territory to
help alleviate economic injury caused by the
Coronavirus (COVID-19).
SBA’s Office of Disaster Assistance will
coordinate with the state’s or territory’s
Governor to submit the request for Economic
Injury Disaster Loan assistance.
Once a declaration is made for designated
areas within a state, the information on
the application process for Economic Injury
Disaster Loan assistance will be made
available to all affected communities.
These loans may be used to pay fixed
debts, payroll, accounts payable and other
bills that can’t be paid because of the
disaster’s impact. The interest rate is 3.75%
for small businesses without credit available
elsewhere; businesses with credit available
elsewhere are not eligible. The interest rate
for non-profits is 2.75%.
SBA offers loans with long-term repayments
in order to keep payments affordable, up to a
maximum of 30 years. Terms are determined
on a case-by-case basis, based upon each
borrower’s ability to repay.
SBA’s Economic Injury Disaster Loans are
just one piece of the expanded focus of the
federal government’s coordinated response,
and the SBA is strongly committed to
providing the most effective and customerfocused
response possible.

The world is on high alert from the recent outbreak of the Coronavirus. Stores are selling out of hand sanitizer, chemical-based cleaning solutions, and
cleansing wipes. My first instinct was to think about ways in which I can naturally support the body’s immune system and ability to heal. Many foods are
already incorporated into my diet on a daily basis, but others can be added for additional support. Below are some of my favorites:
Cook and consume plenty of
herbs and roots daily
Garlic, onion, and ginger are at the top of my
list. Other foods and herbs that are known for
their antiviral and antimicrobial properties
include thyme, oregano, cilantro, tea tree oil,
rosemary, and lemon. Incorporate them into
your meals by making garlic and oregano pesto,
adding tons of garlic and cilantro to guacamole,
soups, stir-fries, and adding ginger, lemon, and
dark leafy greens to smoothies. You can also
brew roots and herbs in boiling water to drink
as a tea.
Get adequate sleep
When a body is able to rest and recover it will be
that much stronger to fight viruses and bacteria.
Wash your hands and
practice good hygiene
Always wash your hands before eating or
touching your face. Also, sanitize frequently
used surfaces, like your smartphone, and those
used for eating. You can make a natural solution
by adding some of the essential oils above to a
spray bottle with white vinegar.
Take plenty of vitamins and
minerals
Boost your immunity with vitamins and minerals
such as Vitamin D, Zinc, Vitamin A and Vitamin
C. My favorite supplement to get a boost of
Vitamins D and A is cod liver oil - one of the
highest orally-ingested sources available.
A calm and vibrant body is a
strong body
Practice stress-reducing activities such as being
in nature, mediation, and plenty of exercise.

@wellnesswithlia
El mundo está en alerta
máxima por el reciente
brote de coronavirus. Las
tiendas están vendiendo
antibacteriales, soluciones de
limpieza a base de químicos y
toallitas desinfectantes para
manos. Mi primer instinto
fue pensar en las maneras
en que naturalmente
puedo apoyar al sistema
inmunológico y la capacidad
de curación del cuerpo.
Muchos alimentos ya
están incorporados a mi
dieta diariamente, pero se
pueden agregar otros para
obtener apoyo adicional. A
continuación se encuentran
algunos de mis favoritos:
Cocine y consuma
muchas hierbas y raíces
diariamente
¡El ajo, la cebolla y el jengibre
están en la parte superior de
mi lista!
Otros alimentos y hierbas
que son conocidos por sus
propiedades antivirales y
antimicrobianas incluyen
tomillo, orégano, cilantro,
aceite de árbol de té, romero
y limón. Incorpórelos a sus
comidas haciendo pesto de
ajo y orégano, agregando
bastante ajo y cilantro al
guacamole, a las sopas y
salteados. Los batidos se
pueden fortalecer agregando
jengibre, limón y verduras de
hojas verdes. También puede
consumir raíces y hierbas en
forma de té.
Duerma lo suficiente
Cuando un cuerpo puede
descansar y recuperarse,
será mucho más fuerte para
combatir virus y bacterias.
¡Lávese las manos y
practique una buena
higiene!
Siempre lávese las manos
antes de comer o tocar
la cara. También puede
desinfectar las superficies
de uso frecuente y las que
se usan para comer. Puede
hacer una solución natural
agregando algunos de los
aceites esenciales anteriores
en una botella de spray con
vinagre blanco.
Tome vitaminas y
minerales
Mejore su inmunidad con
vitaminas y minerales como
la vitamina D, el zinc, la
vitamina A y C. Compruebe
sus niveles con su médico
y hable con su profesional
de la salud sobre las
deficiencias. Mi alimento
favorito para obtener un
impulso de vitaminas D y
A es el aceite de hígado de
bacalao. Una de las fuentes
de alimentos más altas
disponibles para el consumo.
¡Un cuerpo tranquilo y
vibrante es un cuerpo
fuerte!
Practique diariamente
actividades para reducir
el estrés, como estar en la
naturaleza y moverse con
seguridad.

The story behind the food we eat on
Easter Sunday
By Marcella Escarfuller
@bubblegumcatering
We’re all familiar with Easter, the Christian holiday celebrating the death and resurrection of Jesus
Christ. Everyone has their own Easter traditions, whether that involves church or a large family
meal or both. The details on its etymological origins, however, can be somewhat murky, especially
when it comes to the traditional Easter foods we consume.
Why “Easter”?
The word “Easter” comes from the name of Saxon goddess Eostre
whose festival was celebrated in the springtime. The rabbit was
known as the symbol for Eostre, goddess of spring and fertility
because rabbits often give birth to large litters in spring. Non-
English speaking countries’ name for Easter is generally derived
from the Greek and Latin Pascha, meaning Passover, a direct
reference to the Jewish Passover holiday, first applied to Jesus’
death and resurrection as early as 50 A.D.
Why eggs?
In early Christianity, eggs were one of the foods forbidden for
consumption during lent. Early Easter celebrations were marked
with widespread consumption of eggs, a tradition that was passed
down through generations long after the lent restriction was
lifted. Eggs also symbolize life and rebirth in many cultures, adding
to the underlying theme of the holiday. The empty Easter eggs
we decorate and hide for the children are symbolic of the empty
tomb from which Christ rose again.
Why lamb?
Lamb may be an obvious reference for some, being as Christ
is most often referred to as the lamb that was slain to save
humanity. However, eating lamb on Easter has other origins, too.
It was often customary in many pagan traditions to consume lamb
during their springtime festivals, since spring is when lambs were
ready for slaughter.
Why hot cross buns?
Hot cross buns - a sweet bread made with dried fruit and spices
- originated in England and were forbidden by its Protestant
monarchs until the 18th century. The spices in the buns are said to
symbolize the spices used to embalm the body of Christ upon his
death. The buns are also generally decorated with a cross in icing
on top to symbolize the cross in which Christ died.
The Easter holiday certainly has its many traditions and customs,
many of which date back thousands of years. However you
celebrate it, the best tradition of any holiday is sharing memories
with friends and family.
TRANSLATION >> TRADUCCIóN
Todos tenemos cierta
familiaridad con la Pascua, la
fiesta cristiana que celebra
la muerte y resurrección de
Jesucristo. Existen celebraciones
tradicionales diversas de Pascua,
como asistir a la iglesia o realizar
una gran comida familiar, o
ambas. Sin embargo, los detalles
sobre sus orígenes etimológicos
pueden ser algo turbios,
especialmente cuando se trata
de los alimentos tradicionales de
Pascua que consumimos.
¿Por qué “Pascua”?
La palabra “Pascua”, en inglés
Easter, proviene del nombre
de la diosa sajona Eostre, cuyo
festival se celebró en primavera.
El conejo era conocido como el
símbolo de Eostre, la diosa de la
primavera y la fertilidad, porque
los conejos a menudo dan a luz a
grandes camadas en primavera.
El nombre que se le ha dado a
la Pascua en los países que no
hablan inglés, generalmente se
deriva de la palabra Pascua del
griego y del latín, que tiene una
referencia directa a la festividad
judía aplicada por primera vez
a la muerte y resurrección de
Jesús en el año 50 d.C.
¿Por qué huevos?
En el cristianismo primitivo
los huevos eran uno de los
alimentos prohibidos para el
consumo durante la Cuaresma.
Las primeras celebraciones de
Pascua se caracterizaron por
el consumo generalizado de
huevos, una tradición que se
transmitió de generación en
generación mucho después de
que se levantara la restricción.
Los huevos también simbolizan
la vida y el renacimiento en
muchas culturas, y se suman
al tema subyacente de las
vacaciones. Los huevos de
Pascua vacíos que decoramos y
escondemos para los niños son
un símbolo de la tumba vacía de
la que Cristo resucitó.
¿Por qué cordero?
El cordero puede ser una
referencia obvia para algunos, ya
que a Cristo se le conoce como
el cordero que fue asesinado
para salvar a la humanidad.
Sin embargo, comer cordero
en Pascua también tiene
otros orígenes. A menudo, en
muchas tradiciones paganas era
costumbre consumir cordero
durante sus festivales de
primavera, ya que en primavera
es cuando los corderos estaban
listos para el sacrificio.
¿Por qué panecillos de
cuaresma?
Los panecillos de cuaresma
-un pan dulce hecho con frutos
secos y especias- se originaron
en Inglaterra y fueron prohibidos
por sus monarcas protestantes
hasta el siglo XVIII. Se dice que
las especias en los panecillos
simbolizan las especias utilizadas
para embalsamar el cuerpo de
Cristo después de su muerte.
Los panecillos también están
generalmente decorados con
una cruz en glaseado en la parte
superior para simbolizar la cruz
en la que murió Cristo.
La fiesta de Pascua
ciertamente tiene variadas
tradiciones y costumbres,
muchas de las cuales datan de
miles de años. De cualquier
manera que lo celebres, siempre
la mejor tradición de las
festividades es compartir y crear
recuerdos junto a familiares y
amigos.

A Guide to
Netflix’s
Latino TV
Shows
In modern television, it is very rare to find series that prominently feature Latino
Americans stories and casts. With the exception of shows like Freeform’s reboot of
“Party of Five” and FX’s “Sons of Anarchy” spinoff, “Mayans M.C.,” the amount of
representation Latinos get is few and far between. However, Netflix makes up for this
including many different shows focused on the Latino experience.
Here is a quick guide to the shows both old and new that Netflix has to offer.
By Cody Downey
@codyalexdowney
The Trials of Gabriel
Fernandez
Limited Series / Serie
Limitada / Episodes: 6
Following the trial for the murder of an
eight-year-old boy by his parents, this
documentary questions how the system
looks after children in terrible situations.
Though not the most fun viewing, “The
Trials of Gabriel Fernandez” looks at an
important topic and isn’t afraid to shy
away from the disturbing details.
Aunque no es tan divertido, “The trials
of Gabriel Fernandez” examina un tema
Gentefied
Seasons: 1 / Episodes: 10
Running their family taco shop in Los Angeles, the
Morales cousins must work together to save their shop
from the gentrification going on in their neighborhood
while also trying to accomplish their own goals and
dreams.

Brandan“BMike”
Odums
By AnaMaria Bech
@anamabech
‘Brandan is out painting” is what I
heard upon arriving at Studio Be in
the Bywater area of New Orleans for
an interview with the artist himself. I
checked my email, and, in fact, I had
missed the update that instructed me
to meet Brandan at 401 N. Roman
street. We headed his way during
school rush hour, hoping not to be too
late for the 4 p.m. appointment. In my
mind, I imagined arriving at the location
and pulling Odums away from his
entourage during the painting session.
As I got out of the traffic jam, I arrived
at the quiet street and saw the huge
mural with sketches of various people,
and only about 5% of the wall was fully
done. Brandan “BMike” Odums was by
himself, propped on a lift, iPad in one
hand, spray can in the other, music is
playing. It was a beautiful spring day,
but a feeling of uncertainty swept
through the community as the news
about the spread of COVID-19 in our
city was breaking. At this point, it was
business as usual and Odums’ office
for the day felt pleasant with perfect
warm weather and even light. He
was hoping to make progress on an
already overdue project. This was the
third of my brief encounters with the
artist. However, this was the only time
I actually got to see him in his element
creating art.
Odums got down from the lift to
greet the photographer and I. Just
then, a black jeep drove by, blew the
horn, only to slow down and park. The
driver was Charlie Vaughn, Odums’s
friend and an art teacher from a nearby
school who came by to analyze his
technique and ask him some questions.
While we were getting ready to take
Odums’ pictures, we talked briefly
about his trajectory, about some of
the press I’ve read about him, and how
much coverage his work has received.
We discussed the “illegality” of his initial
works at the Florida projects when
Odums’ art was considered defiant and
forbidden. We mentioned we had been
previously introduced by a friend in
common during his massive Exhibit Be,
an incredible display he had done in
Algiers some years ago. He immediately
started praising our mutual friend
Perez, telling us how he made an
impact on his life, saying, “he was one
of the first video professionals that
“Systemic racism can
be tackled through
artwork”
reached out to me about 2 Cent and
told me what we were doing was dope.”
Odums explained he was working
on the last mural that needed to be
completed for the commission of
the city of New Orleans during its
tricentennial celebrated from February
2018 for the whole year. He laughed,
explaining he had been traveling a
lot, and that when he is in town he is
pulled in many directions, including
the school tours at his Studio Be on
Royal Street. While we talked about the
mural, cars passed by and beeped at
him. A couple of girls in one car giggled,
waved at him, and even looked a bit
starstruck. People greeted him, yelled
praising words, stopped and admired
the mural before moving on. “This is
part of the process,” he says. This is
another reason why it takes him longer
to paint in New Orleans. It’s quite
different when he goes out of town
to paint because he can fully dedicate
himself to that creation free of many
distractions. Of course, there are a
few interruptions but he can remain
focused on his masterpiece. At home,
he is a staple of the community and
has to take care of business matters
while people stop by to greet him and
talk to him. Naturally, he doesn’t mind
these interactions with the people and
the neighborhood as it provides him an
opportunity to explain all the layers of
the final piece. Educating the public is
very much part of his mission, and, as
he puts it, “that relationship between
audience is needed for sustainability.”
For this mural, the city bestowed upon
him a complete artistic license, from
choosing the location to creating the
piece.
There is a lot of research that
goes behind the work. It is a very
collaborative process. One location
he scouted turned out to be the
perfect setting when he learned this
location was an important gathering
spot known as The Coliseum Arena.
Here, boxing matches and other types
of gatherings took place, including
Civil Rights reunions with important
figures such as Dr. Martin Luther King
Jr., and Ella Fitzgerald, among many
others. “Friends have found newspaper
articles, pictures, and all kinds of
information about this place,” says
Odums, indicating that the process
involves community members who
develop an interest in researching
the history, which makes the artwork
very relevant. Friends also contribute
by finding people and sending their
photographs so that he can portray
real people on the walls. “There are
lots of sports being played in this park,
so they are also supposed to look like
they’re the audience for the people
playing sports,” Odums explains. These
everyday people and some historical
characters will be painted to represent
different eras. The process starts with
a request, and moves through from
location scouting, historical research,
finding the subjects, creating a digital
illustrated composition, gathering
materials and equipment, scheduling
time, prepping the walls in some areas
with a foam roller and paint, and then
sketching the shapes with blue spray
paint.
This quiet afternoon outdoors,
during a work in progress, was much
different than our last time together
during his first tour at the Newcomb
Art Museum at Tulane University. “Not
Supposed to BE Here” was his first
solo exhibition in a museum, which
opened January 18, 2020, and was to
be on view through May 23rd. A free
tour on Saturday, March 7th attracted
quite a diverse crowd that filled the
small gallery. I could see the excitement
of his followers from being in the
presence of the artist himself. Many
were familiar with his work, but for a
few others, it seemed like they were
crossing a cultural barrier. I could hear
them debating whether all the pieces
were, in fact, made of only spray paint
because “they looked like fine art.”
Another group had to ask others if
the meaning of the word “dope,” used
constantly by Odums while explaining
some of his accomplishments, had a
positive or a negative meaning. His
art, initially considered vandalism, as
it happened with graffiti in general,
is now part of a gallery exhibit in a
museum of a prestigious university.
“I don’t know if I’m
supposed to be here, but
I’m already here and
I’m not going anywhere”
Throughout the rooms, the quest
for belonging is depicted in different
forms. We appreciate art ranging from
a young Odums learning history and
painting historical and cultural heroes
on T-shirts to a young professional
questioning his place as a production
crew member in a local television
studio, a bold creator exploring cultural
storylines through filmmaking, an artist
putting everyday black people on the
cover of a comic book, to a person
defining his genealogy and being lifted
by the stories of his ancestors, to an
artist paying homage to cultural heroes,
to even art alluding to the fact that the
city of New Orleans, isn’t supposed
to still be here. Odums reminded
the audience that it was his first time
hosting the gallery tour. But even while
being unclear of the flow and how to
take the audience through each art
piece, listening to the thought process
and learning all the backstory behind
each piece was such a valuable insight
for those of us in attendance. Nothing
on those walls seemed coincidental
or fortuitous. Odums’s artistry is
masterful. There is a meaning to
each subject, with deep layers in the
process that convey a carefully crafted
message.
His spray-painted works of art
become a layered masterpiece that
comprises multiple dimensions. We see
the large scale characters who may be
historical figures, civil rights leaders,
musicians, or sportsmen, but also see
the greatness of regular people who
become relevant, with art that seeks to
remind us there is value in the day-today.
Knowing that the NOCCA graduate
dove deep into videography as his
profession, creating a name
for himself as a filmmaker
in the 2 Cent collective,
makes sense when you
analyze his visual storytelling
technique. Somehow, Odums
has created a unique form
of art, where still images
can somehow move you
through layers that become
storylines, and colors
that enhance character
development. Odums sees
the stories that are already in
place and infuses them with
a feeling of “if these walls
could talk”. During the tour,
he refers to that adage when
a young audience member
asks about the writing in the
background of his pieces.
Odums thinks about the stories that
are implied, whether on a wall, or what
is contained within a painting, so he
recreates that feeling of a wall on a
blank canvas. He includes the surface
and the texture, the messages that
could have been there with words
or numbers and allow his characters
to show that back story through
transparencies within the work.
We are so drawn into his paintings
because beyond the scale and the
skillful management of aerosol paint,
his images can tell multidimensional
stories.
His work starts with lengthy research,
and the characters are developed
by the essence of the very location,
the buildings, the neighborhood, the
people, and its audience, all giving such
deep meaning to his work. His “fine art
graffiti” conveys strong messages and
high relevance. His subjects do not
provide testimonials or soundbites,
but he still incorporates phrases and
quotes that enhance the messages
and develop the characters. He is
aware of the need to honor graffiti art,
stating he honors “spray paint as an
art of communicating through words
and staying true to the messages. I
see large scale painting as a process
of glorification of the people I paint.”
Odums enjoys creating art on big
canvases and for him, in many
instances, it’s also important that he
gets to glorify and value everyday
people. He learned by listening to some
of his mentors that there is no need
for superhuman powers to highlight
people. He instructs us, “let’s value
them for who they are.”
His artwork also challenges us.
Odums asks us to evaluate and review
our attitudes towards people. “Systemic
racism can be tackled through artwork,”
he explains while pointing to a painting
of a young black man holding a horn
and asks if we react differently to
that same man when we see him
on the street and he is not holding
his instrument. His art is a powerful
statement against prejudice and the
way society sees or unsees people,
particularly everyday people of color.
A simple art lesson by Odums came
at the end of his gallery tour when
a young person asked him if he was
ever afraid of the outcome of his final
piece. Quite genuinely, he answered,
“not really. For me, the process is
the most exciting part of creating.” I
was a witness to this during the brief
time I stayed watching paint after our
encounter on N. Roman street, all by
himself, favorite tunes playing, spray
can in one hand, iPad on the other,
painting until sunset. Watching him
passionately immerse himself in his art,
you wouldn’t think the world around
was collapsing through a pandemic.
The city came to a halt, but the painting
continued. Through all uncertainty, his
“BMike” work of art will remain to retell
history, to be a witness, and to color
our hope. As for the title of his solo
show at Tulane University, Odums’s
conclusion could serve to foreshadow
what we would be dealing with within
the next few days. “I don’t know if I’m
supposed to be here, but I’m already
here and I’m not going anywhere.”

salió a pintar” es lo que
me dijeron al llegar a Studio
“Brandan
Be en el área de Bywater de
Nueva Orleans para llevar a cabo una
entrevista con el artista. Revisé mi correo
electrónico y, de hecho, me había perdido
la actualización que me indicaba que debía
encontrarme con Brandan en 401 de la
calle N. Roman.
sujetos completamente terminados.
Brandan “BMike” Odums estaba solo,
pinto”
Royal Street.
totalmente dedicado a esa creación. Hay
pocas interrupciones y mucho enfoque,

azul.
Este encuentro de una tarde tranquila
durante una obra en progreso fue muy
diferente a nuestro encuentro anterior
to BE Here” o “No Debería ESTAR aquí” en
ninguna parte”
una multitud bastante diversa que llenó
el museo. Se podía ver la emoción de sus
seguidores por estar en presencia del
artista.
formas. Desde adolescente, Odums ha
aprendido historia y pintado personajes
hablar” haciendo referencia a esa frase
trabajo. Su “graffiti de bellas artes” lleva
consigo mensajes poderosos y relevantes. A
diariamente.
Una simple lección de arte
vino del propio Odums al final
de su recorrido por la galería
cuando un joven le preguntó
si alguna vez tuvo miedo del
resultado de su pieza final.
“Realmente no. El proceso
es la parte más emocionante
de crear”, respondió Odums.
Fui testigo de esto durante
el breve tiempo que me
quedé mirándolo en la
calle N. Roman. Ahí estaba
él solo, escuchando sus
canciones favoritas, lata
de aerosol en una mano,
iPad en la otra, pintando
hasta el atardecer, sin
pensar que nuestro mundo
alrededor se derrumbaba
a través de una pandemia.
La ciudad se detuvo, pero
la pintura continuó. A pesar
de toda la incertidumbre,
esa obra de arte “BMike”
permanecerá, para volver a
contar la historia, para ser
una audiencia y para colorear
nuestra esperanza.
Para la pregunta sobre
si deberíamos estar aquí,
Odums tiene una sencilla
respuesta: “No se si debería
estar aquí, pero ya lo estoy,
y no me voy para ninguna
parte”.

economic development
economic development
why
technology and data
By Alejandra Guzman
@aleguzman
matter
There is a lot of discussion in the
Economic Development field
on how technology is changing
the nature of our current jobs and
what that means for the future of work
and designing curricula to meet those
demands. In New Orleans, the different
organizations that are involved in this
topic are in constant communication and
coordination with each other to help
address this challenge. Although this is a
huge issue that needs to be addressed,
I also want to point out that there are
more positive aspects to technology
and the data than can be collected
through it. This is benefiting workforce
development, for example, by increasing
access to online curricula and providing
more flexibility to both students and
educators. It is also benefiting other areas
of economic development. For example,
at the New Orleans Business Alliance,
we use data and technology to support
our work around business attraction and
retention.
A big focus of my 2020 work will
be on developing and executing
real estate, policy, and partnership
strategies to promote the development
of communities that have been
handicapped by disinvestment.
Technology and data analytics will play a
large role on this.
In the case of real estate development,
we partner with internationally
recognized data analytic companies
such as Buxton to build the case of why
investment opportunities have a high
probability of being successful in our
market. Our partnership will help us
gain access to relevant information and
elevate our potential to recruit retailers
and real estate investments to New
Orleans.
It is important to note that over the
last decade, the process of retail site
selection has changed significantly. Once
considered solely an art, relying on the
experience of seasoned professionals,
it is now becoming a blend of art and
science. In the past, cities would be
“With data analytics,
we now understand
purchasing behaviors,
media preferences and
lifestyle characteristics”
analyzed mainly on median income levels
and other demographic factors, which are
important, but not the only ones. They
do not fully capture the lifestyle details
that explain why people have specific
shopping behavior. Psychographics
can provide a much clearer picture
of the potential customer base. With
data analytics, we now understand
purchasing behaviors, media preferences,
and lifestyle characteristics. This
information has helped us clarify certain
misconceptions around the communities
we want to support.
We have proven with data that just
because a certain area lacks retail and
restaurants at the moment doesn’t mean
that there is not a consumer base to
support them. This has helped us focus
our energy on the real challenges and
make a more compelling business pitch
to those brands that we want to attract.
Our NOLABA team will be using this
information on RECon, the International
Council of Shopping Centers’ largest
global gathering of retail and real estate
professionals.
For the 10th year in a row, the New
Orleans Business Alliance will build a

La importancia de
la tecnología y de los datos
Por Alejandra Guzmán
@aleguzman
educadores.

a life with
Christ
By Dr. Cristy Cali
@drcristycali
From a metaphysical point of view, Christ
represents the God-consciousness
personified - a real, incarnate
representation of Divine Energy walking the
Earth.
In 1 John 4:7-8, the bible reads,
“ 7 Beloved, let us love one another, for love
is of God, and every one that loveth is born of
God and knoweth God.
8 He that loveth not, knoweth not God, for
God is love.”
Love is the absolute highest-vibrational
energy frequency in the Universe. In fact,
this energy is so strong that studies have
shown miraculous healing through an
intense concentration - a unification and
reconstruction of atoms even after destruction
- and so much more. The point is, every human
being is born with the capability and, I would
argue, the responsibility to love.
So, if God is love, then the energy of the
God-consciousness lives within us. Compassion
and empathy are the results of harnessing and
aligning with this Divine power. How powerful,
beautiful, and poetic is that? Nevertheless,
included with this inherent power of love is
the contrasting polarity of hate, division, and
destruction. To the extent that we have the
ability to utilize this power for the greatest and
highest good comes the potential to do the
opposite to the same degree. In other words,
we can hate at the same level of intensity to
that which we can love if that is a path we
choose to take.
We must recognize the responsibility of free
will with the Divine grace of love. Each one of
us have access to the greatest power of the
Universe - love. To lead a life with Christ is to
consciously and intentionally align ourselves
with the mission of unconditional love through
the acceptance of ourselves, of others, the
respect for free will and the recognition of selfresponsibility.
Whatever we are capable of, we realize
others are capable of as well. Self-acceptance
means we accept ourselves fully for who
we are, acknowledging our strengths and
weaknesses. Accomplishing self-acceptance is
the first step to self-love and the development
of unconditional love for your neighbors.
Respect for free will is necessary for world
peace and harmonious living, which includes
the right for others to make the necessary
mistakes to learn life’s greatest lessons. This
leads to self-responsibility, the principle of
not doing for others what they could and
should do for themselves. This, essentially,
is accountability for your own actions. Jesus
demonstrated this very principle in Matthew
4:19 when he said, “19 And He said unto
them, Follow Me, and I will make you fishers
of men.” By teaching his followers how to
fish, Jesus created a ripple effect that allowed
his knowledge to be passed from person to
person.
We live a life with Christ whenever we
utilize our free will to teach and inspire
others, respect their decisions, respecting
and allowing the learning processes of others
to play out. How many times did we “see
something coming” for someone we love or
care for? Especially our children, family, friends
and partners? Sometimes our role is simply to
be an observer, and have the compassion and
empathy to be present as a support system to
others. This is kindness, and kindness in turn is
an expression of love.
The challenges and obstacles we experience
in life may never go away, but the way in which
we respond when they appear is the only
variable left within our own control. When
we have self-control, we have self-mastery.
Our bodies obtain both the power of love and
of destruction - it is the necessary opposite
required for us to understand all the options
available to us under free will. Therefore, selfmastery
is consciously aligning with our hearts,
the home-base of our love frequency, where
the God-consciousness we channel lives. This
is how we come from a place of love by default
and how we lead a life with Christ.

Meditation Exercise
Read the following quote out loud:
“Let me help you through this day. The
challenges you face are far too great for
you to handle alone. You are keenly aware
of your helplessness in the scheme of
events you face. This awareness opens up
a choice: to doggedly go it alone or to walk
with Me in humble steps of dependence.
Actually, this choice is continually before
you, but difficulties highlight the decisionmaking
process. So, consider it all joy
whenever you are enveloped in various
trials. These are gifts from Me, reminds
you to rely on Me alone.” - Psalm 46:1;
Psalm 63:7-8; James 1:2-3
Now read the quote again, but this time
imagine Jesus speaking directly to you
from your heart chakra, radiating green
rays of light. In this quote, Jesus is saying
you always have the option to walk with
Him, but usually you forget that He lives
in your heart until a great challenge is
presented before you. Jesus is asking you
to depend on him by consciously making
the decision to align with his energy of
unconditional love. He lives in you. You
are born of the same Eternal Flame as
Christ himself. By trusting in Him, you are
essentially allowing His words and actions
to be lived through you channeled through
you as a vessel of Truth.
Tu has

Aceptarnos a
nosotros mismos significa que nosotros nos
aceptamos plenamente por lo que somos,
aceptando nuestras fuerzas y debilidades.
persona.
Vivimos una vida cristiana cuando utilizamos
nuestro libre albedrío para enseñar e inspirar
a otros a respetar sus decisiones, respetando
y permitiendo que pasen por su propio
proceso de aprendizaje. ¿Cuántas veces
“hemos visto algo venir” para alguien a quien
amamos o que apreciamos… especialmente
nuestros hijos, familia, amigos y parejas?
