DEPRESSION IN Y
Depression isn’t just someone in
a bad mood, it is a serious issue.
Many people who suffer with major
depressive disorder refuse to seek
help because they are embarrassed of
the way they feel. Depression causes
people to be more to themselves and
go without social interaction at school;
in a work environment or just in day to
day scenarios. Many more people suffer
with depression then you may think.
Young adults aren’t the only group of
individuals that suffer with depression
and it affects each age group differently.
Those who suffer with depression are
dealing with more than you can see
on the surface. For example Chester
Bennington, lead singer of Linkin Park,
took his own life two years ago, despite
seeming happy and normal to his
friends and family. Someone suffering
with depression might seem normal on
the outside, but some signs of depression
would be isolating themselves, lacking
motivation or loss of interest in things
they enjoyed before. All age groups are
affected by depression. Children with
parents who suffer from major depressive
disorder are more likely to become
depressed themselves.
(National Institute of Mental Health) Two
to three percent of children ages six to
twelve suffer with depression. Roughly
six to eight percent of children twelve
to seventeen have serious depression.
Approximately 9.4% of adolescents
reported that they suffered through
a major depression episode in 2017.
In that 9.4% of adolescents 71% of
those children suffered from severe
impairment, which basically means
they had a hard time to go on in their
day to day life. This all leads up to being
young adults. When responsibilities
start to pile on and expectations of
what college to attend and what career
path to go down. With depression it is
hard to make these sort of decisions,
because most people who suffer with
depression don’t care what happens in
their future. (Emamzadeh) An estimated
7.1% of adults in 2017 suffered from
