Ironically, Professor Wakefield, who
nearly triggered a panic attack, was
able to connect me with resources for
my mental health. He also sparked
my love for philosophy and taught
me to use my strengths to empower
others just as he did for me. Professor
Boruta never once looked down on
me because of my math skills and patiently
taught me the basics.
Dr. Zaranek took me in although I
was not her student, and helped me
navigate the Social Work program.
Professor Karlis and Dr. C taught me
how important representation is, their
lectures included people of all ages and
races.
I am honored to work at the Studios with
Leah, Brett, Rich, Andrea and Megan
who are very kind and supportive people.
Encouragement and kindness has
empowered me to take on leadership roles;
I am president of philosophy club and a
tutor at the Reading and Writing Studios.
I am going to Oakland University to
study Social Work and become a
therapist. My goal is to help others and
advocate for accessible mental health
services. I hope my words can help save
someone fighting a mental illness. If you are
struggling and need a sign to keep going,
this is it. You are not alone and there
is hope. Four years ago I didn’t think I
would live to see the next day, let alone
go to college. I graduated high school
with a 3.8gpa, and the ceremony took
place right here on this stage, where I’m
graduating with an Associates degree.
Some people want you to believe that
it won’t get better. I am living proof that
it does.
You are strong. You may feel silenced
but you are worth it. Keep going and tell
your truth even if the world is against you.
You never know whose life you’ll save.
Congratulations to the class of 2019.
Thank you.
