SHAMAN LIFE
A HMONG FAM
Being Shaman in a Hmong family,
we have steps as a family to take.
Shamanism is a type of religion that
is very rare. Most people in this world
do not understand what or who the
ethnicity Hmong is. In most Hmong
families they follow the traditional
Shamanism such as having a specific
Shaman person who is designated to
do what’s needed to be done for each
family. The Shaman is passed down from
generations in the family and they are
not just picked normally because anyone
down the generation must be the “right”
one to be chosen. As the “right” one
this means they must be qualified to
make sure that they can be strong to
complete the tasks that each family
wants. Shaman in Hmong families have
their own way of doing what a Shaman
must do. A Shaman that was chosen in
my family was from my mother’s side.
She is the half-sister of my mother and
she was chosen to become a Shaman
and got the privilege to make sure all
the family’s good spirits are still with
