� Chloramphenicol should never be used in babies less than 2 months <strong>of</strong> age and with<br />

caution in infants less than 4kg or 6 months <strong>of</strong> age59. Because <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> danger <strong>of</strong> OTP staff giving<br />

chloramphenicol to <strong>the</strong>se categories <strong>of</strong> patient, it should not be used as routine treatment in OTP<br />

programmes.<br />

� - Children referred to <strong>the</strong> OTP from an in-patient facility or have been transferred from ano<strong>the</strong>r<br />

OTP after having received antibiotics should not be given a second course.<br />

� Children who require second-line antibiotic treatment or have significant infections should be<br />

treated as in-patients. There<strong>for</strong>e <strong>the</strong>re are no recommendations <strong>for</strong> “second-line” antibiotics <strong>for</strong><br />

use in out-patient treatment programmes.<br />

3. Duration <strong>of</strong> antibiotic treatment:<br />

The first dose should be given under supervision; treatment should continue <strong>for</strong> a total <strong>of</strong> 7 days. For<br />

out-patient care antibiotic syrup is preferred. If it is not available <strong>the</strong> tablets should be used and cut in<br />

half by <strong>the</strong> staff be<strong>for</strong>e being given to <strong>the</strong> caretakers (<strong>for</strong> children
