REPORTcompute only a precise timesolution, by assuming a preciseknowledge of the antennalocation (better, of its phasecenter),assessed at least oncethrough non-GNSS methods.Such information can be keptin the receiver, which will thenonly work as a timing receiver.The need for long coherentintegration and the high dynamics,as well as the need for areliable back-up, will suggestthe use of miniaturized atomicclocks to avoid degradation ofthe performances during theintegration (COTS miniaturizedatomic clocks are alreadyavailable in the market andcurrently used in professionalground equipment).ConclusionThe exploration of the Moonwith human and robotic missionsand its colonization,through the establishment ofpermanent bases, will requireplanetary communicationsand navigation infrastructures.An affordable, no-nonsenseapproach might rely on theuse of COTS components,presently deployed on Earthin LTE and 5G networks, forcommunication and navigationon the Moon surface.This approach largely satisfiesthe requirements of performance,reliability, affordability,and sustainability, as based oncommercial technology andbeing incrementally expandableover time.ABSTRACTWith the Artemis program, NASA plans tocollaborate with commercial and internationalpartners to land in 2024 human beingson the Moon and then to establish apermanent “base camp” by the end of thedecade.Challenges ahead are numerous: the Moon“base camp” will have to meet very stringentrequirements in terms of operations,logistics, and safety of life; moreover, a permanentbase on the Moon will have to beaffordable and sustainable, i.e., its cost willneed to be assessed over its life-cycle, under along term technical, economic, and politicalperspective.The exploration of the Moon with humanand robotic missions and its colonization,through the establishment of a permanentbase, will require many vital supportinginfrastructures, such as communicationnetworks and positioning, navigation, andtiming (PNT) systems.KEY WORDSPositioning; navigation; timing; GNSS;Moon; infrastructure; network; communication;IoT; 5GAUTHORDr. Ing.
