About20% of the world’s population takes atleast 20% of animal protein from fish.According to the FAO, human populationgrowth is expected to rise fish consumptionby around 1.2% per year overthe next ten years. By 2030, the productionof fish and seafood products is expectedto exceed 200 million tons comparedto the current world catch fishingproduction of around 90-95 milliontons per year. In addition, today abouta third of fish resources are exposed toexcessive exploitation, and this lead tothe definition of the United Nations2030 Agenda – Goal 14 “Conserve andsustainably use the oceans, seas and marineresources”.Aquaculture represents the optimal solutionto ensure the production of fishand shellfish necessary to meet globalneeds. However, effective and sustainablemanagement of aquaculture sitesrequires improvement of technologiesand production processes. Nonetheless,fish and shellfish farms need to adapttheir farming techniques to the environmentalcontext, the habitat in whichanimals live. Temperature, chlorophylland turbidity of marine waters significantlyaffect the growth rate and healthof animals.Climate changes have led to changes inthe sea temperature and in the quantitiesof phytoplankton, factors that affectthe growth rates and mortality of animalsand, therefore, the productivity offarms and the quality of products.It is clear that a deeper knowledge ofthese variables is fundamental for achievingan optimized farm management.An extraordinary source of informationcomes, today, from Earth observationsatellites. Their data allow to carefullyestimate multiple parameters such assea temperature, chlorophyll concentration(proxy of the presence of phytoplankton)and water turbidity (proxy ofwater quality).Over the last 25 years, Planetek Italia hasgained great expertise in this field thankstoseveral European Space Agency (ESA)and European Commission researchprograms, such as “Integrated CoastalWater Management for MED (ICWMfor MED)”, “SAtellite Near Real TimeMonitoring Network (SAIMON)” and“Marine-EO” projects, to name the latest.As part of the European project “Useruptake activities Copernicus MarineEnvironment Service (CMEMS) –Promoting demonstrations of CMEMSdownstream services.”, coordinated byMercator Ocean, Planetek has furthermoreenhanced Copernicus CMEMSdata and services, creating an innovativeplatform called Rheticus® providing ondemandgeoanalytics services specificallydesigned for Environmental Reporting,Maritime Engineering, as well as fishingand aquaculture activities.All these experiences have contributedto the development of Rheticus®Aquaculture service, specifically designedfor the management of mussel farmingsites. The service was developedby Planetek Italia in partnership withBluefarm s.r.l. to provide mussel farmerswith a weekly digital bulletin of updatedinformation on trends of sea temperatureand chlorophyll, on growth rateof molluscs, as well as growth trendscompared with past ones. The servicealso provides an estimate of the optimalharvesting time and expected volume ofproductions.Thanks to an agreement with theMediterranean Aquaculture Association(AMA), 23 aquaculture sites distributedalong Italian coasts are using Rheticus®Aquaculture to support the operationalmanagement of mussel farms. The firstresults of the initiative were presented ina workshop organized last 20 February2020 during the Aquafarm fair inPordenone.The workshop confirmed a great interestof farmers to receive constantlyupdated information, useful for theoptimal management of their sites in atypical Industry 4.0 logic suited to theaquaculture sector. Among many emergedideas, there was a growing interestin extending the service to other speciessuch as oysters, which are finding widespreaduse in Italian seas.https://www.geoforall.it/kfy88
TELERILEVAMENTONEWSTHE NEW FACE OF THE RHETICUSNETWORK ALERT EDITION 2020 IS UP!We are excited to announce the launch of the newRheticus® Network Alert version, designed to enhanceyour browsing experience, with brand new tools helpingusers to prioritize inspection activities.Rheticus® Network Alert is a turnkey vertical web servicefor the continuous monitoring of instability phenomenaaffecting pipeline networks (water and sewage) in urbanareas, caused by ground displacement. The service helpsto highlight problems before they become critical bypointing out locations of concern.The information is updated and delivered to utilitycompanies with extremely intuitive Business Intelligencetools to add dynamic analysis and new features to theirplanning, management and maintenance activities.The Rheticus® Network Alert 2020 user interface is theresult of a design process, which includes the user interfaceexperience and the analysis of specific informationneeds of Rheticus clients around the globe, and notablyof multi-utility pipeline maintenance managers.The new tools allow users to Identify scores (segments)with highest likelihood of failure in order to prioritizeinspection activities before major events occur.With the new “Inspection Priority Score” tool, each segmentof the network has an Inspection Priority Score,ranging between 0 and 1. The greater Inspection PriorityScore, the greater level of concern. Through a dynamicwindow, it is possible to select a particular range ofInspection Priority Score and, consequently, the relatedsegments having a score belonging to the selected range.Further clicking over each segment, a pop-up windowshows all information related to the selected segment:4Segment ID;4Address and geographic coordinates (latitude, longitude);4Segment Status;4Velocity (mm/year);4Acceleration (mm/year2);4Distance of the critical PS2 from the segment (m);4Inspection Priority Score.Finally, in order to get all the information in more details,the new Rheticus® Network Alert edition also offers a detailedreport that is available on the table at the bottomleft-side of the web interface.
