Myawakening came at a Matrixglobal show in Florida earlierthis year, where I witnessedsome amazing colouring.Take time out. My life hasalways been full-on and staysthat way until I burn out!But having had this enforcedrest has made a differenceto both my creative outlookand thirst for knowledge.KEN’S DIAGNOSISOh boy, Neil, you don’t need a pagelonganswer, you need me to write abook! Let’s start with Covid-19. As I write we’reexperiencing regional lockdowns, infectionrates are rising and there is no real light at theend of the tunnel. Salons are performing likeroller coasters. Buying patterns have changed.By the time you read this we will be seeingthe after-effects of furlough and you and I willbe part of an industry that will probably havebuilt up its biggest debt burden ever.One serious tip I will give you, as you sayyou are planning a new salon in 2021, is tomake doubly sure you have checked all of yournumbers. The projections you will have done,both financial and market-wise, will havechanged drastically over recent times. Updateand review before you commit. I would neversay: “Don’t do it”, because there are alwaysopportunities in tough times. But you musthave the right ‘product’ and you must have thesolution to a problem.Your plate spinning challenge has a simple,two-part solution that is sadly not quite sosimple to execute.Part One: Systems. The bigger you grow,the more you need systems to ensure thateach of your salons maintain your brandstandards. Every part of your business should“I have my own product line,I’m an extensions specialistwith clients travelling fromall over the country to seeme, and I’m planning anew salon in 2021, whichwill be my fourth. I’mspinning a lot of plates,and Covid-19 is a constantvariable to consider.How can I ensure I keep themspinning successfully withoutany drop in the quality of serviceand experience?”NEIL MACLEANNEIL MACLEAN HAIR STUDIOhave clearly documented systems. As a highly-skilledcraftsman, systems may not drive you, butas you grow you must also become a highlyskilledbusinessman.Part Two: Team. To maintain your brandyou need a highly committed, well rewardedand highly motivated team. You cannot do thisalone and you will frazzle yourself if you try.You probably now have even morequestions than you started with Neil,and I am always happy for you tocontact me directly. Many yearsago, I reached the stage where, asmy businesses grew, I realised therewas stuff I didn’t know.My final tip would be togrow yourself.
