Entry requirements
• 4 GCSEs at grade 4 (C) or above, including English
& maths on entry.
• A clear Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check
at the start of the course.
• A keen interest in the education and welfare of
children.
About the course
Focussing on children’s education from birth to
19 years old, you study all aspects of children’s
development, such as their behaviour, the support of
their education including the Early Years Foundation
Stage, and the National Curriculum. You will learn the
principles of observation, recording and assessing
development to ensure children thrive. Other
topics include the principles of Equality & Diversity,
legislation, the legal & moral rights of children and
the implementation of nondiscriminatory practices.
You will learn about working with parents, agencies,
SEND and the safeguarding of children to promote
their welfare. You will also learn about proficiency in
language and how to support children with English
as an additional language. As a Childcare practitioner,
you must be committed to reflective practice to
improve your own professional development and
also have an understanding of educational theory.
Industry placement
You will have a placement for 45-60 days to develop
your practical and technical skills. Regular progress
reviews and meetings will ensure you are getting the
best experience possible.

These include Health, Safety & Environmental
regulations in the Health & Science sector;
managing information and data within the Health
& Science sector; Scientific and Clinical Practice;
Science concepts - Human anatomy & physiology
and diseases & disorders; the Healthcare sector,
providing person-centered care; Health & Wellbeing;
and managing personal information.
