ABS / Air Bag 2004 User Guide Chapter 1: General Information
Equipment Descriptions
Cables
The cable used to connect the NGIS tool to the data link
connector (DLC) of a vehicle’s electronic control unit
(ECU) depends on the type of vehicle being tested. The
two most common cables are shown below. They are
the System Smart 25-pin cable (3305-73) and the
DB25 power cable (3305-72). An optional extension
cable may also be used.
Note: The Air Bag / ABS software tells you which cable must
be used for the vehicle you are testing. For details, refer to
“Step 1: Enter the Vehicle Information” on page 13.
Figure 1.3: System Smart 25-Pin Cable
The System Smart 25-pin cable is for On Board Diagnostic
II (OBD ll) vehicles. The cable has the following
components:
Item 1 J-1962 Connector - connects to the data link connector
(DLC) of the vehicle’s electronic control unit.
Item 2 System Smart Insert (SSI) - inserts into the port on
the top of the 25-pin connector. There are several
SSIs available (some are 3306-11, 3306-15, 3306-
22). The SSI used depends on the vehicle being
tested.
Item 3 25-pin Male Connector - connects to the DB25 port
on the top of the NGIS tool. The 25-pin connector has
a port on the top of it for inserting a System Smart
Insert (SSI).
DB25 Power Cable (3305-72)
Figure 1.4: DB25 Power Cable
The DB25 power cable is for non-OBD ll vehicles and
some OBD II vehicles. The cable has the following
components:
Item 1 8-Pin Adapter Connector - connects to the correct
adapter for the vehicle being tested. (Refer to
“Vehicle Adapters” on page 4.) The adapter then
connects to the data link connector (DLC) of the
vehicle’s electronic control unit.
Item 2 Power Plug - inserts into the vehicle’s cigarette
lighter receptacle. An optional Battery Adapter
(212638) can be used to connect to the vehicle’s
battery instead of the cigarette lighter receptacle.
(Refer to “Battery Adapter (212638)” on page 5.)
Item 3 25-pin Male Connector - connects to the DB25 port
on the top of the NGIS tool.
An optional extension cable (3305-71) is available. The
cable has the following connectors:
Item 1 25-pin Female Connector - connects to the 25-pin
male connector on the System Smart 25-pin cable,
the DB25 power cable, or any other 25-pin cable
being used.
Item 2 25-pin Male Connector - connects to the DB25 port
on the top of the NGIS tool.
