Formally, the Mattachine Society included lesbians as<br />
well, though gay men predominated. Lesbians justifi ably<br />
thought that such an organization would either not suffi<br />
ciently take their interests in<strong>to</strong> account or fail <strong>to</strong> do so.<br />
In 1955, Del Martin and Phyllis Lyon founded the fi rst lesbian<br />
organization in America, the Daughters of Bilitis. Like<br />
the Mattachine Society, the organization was of an overall<br />
leftist nature.<br />
In the 1960s, as liberal movements across the board<br />
were gaining strength, the battle for the rights of gays<br />
and lesbians became more radical. Mattachine’s new leader,<br />
Frank Kemeny, maintained that the movement should<br />
not politely ask society <strong>to</strong> take a kinder view, but rather<br />
fi ght for civil rights alongside other minorities. This radicalism<br />
later led <strong>to</strong> a schism in the homophile movement.<br />
Liberal leaders who tried <strong>to</strong> convince society of their<br />
own inoff ensiveness found themselves marginalized and<br />
they gradually became irrelevant as newer leaders en-<br />
