Music from Giacomo Puccini opera “Tosca” adds<br />
additional force <strong>to</strong> the tragic nature of Penn’s Milk<br />
character. It traces the loss of love, the finding of a<br />
new one and, at the end – while watching a performance<br />
of “Tosca” – rediscovering oneself and being<br />
reborn while unconsciously anticipating death.<br />
Gus Van Sant is well familiar with the his<strong>to</strong>ry of European<br />
cinema, but his references <strong>to</strong> film greats of<br />
yesteryear are subtle and made <strong>to</strong> fit the reality in<br />
which characters dwell. At times he uses the comedic<br />
pie-throwing used since the early films of Mack Sennett<br />
while elsewhere he follows Luchino Visconti’s<br />
habit of having his characters live out an opera in<br />
their own personal lives.<br />
Van Sant takes a humorous approach, just like Harvey<br />
Milk did in his political career. <strong>The</strong> direc<strong>to</strong>r makes<br />
an obvious reference <strong>to</strong> Tosca’s fall from the <strong>to</strong>wer<br />
and the appearance of soldiers onstage in setting the<br />
stage for Milk’s murder.
