In general, Van Sant does not manipulate the<br />

feelings of the characters and the audience, as so<br />

often happens in gay-themed films. His work is neither<br />

melodrama, nor propaganda, nor an epicurean<br />

canvas for mythical personalities who fight for gay<br />

rights.<br />

While the beginning of the fi lm, Milk is enthusiastic<br />

and idealistic, later on things become more complicated<br />

and tense. Together with the development of the plot,<br />

the visual aspect also evolves throughout the course<br />

of the fi lm. <strong>The</strong>re is more and more movement and the<br />

sense of ecstasy becomes stronger. More and more<br />

people crowd the screen; through the juxtaposition of<br />

smaller and larger groups, the direc<strong>to</strong>r and the edi<strong>to</strong>r set<br />

the stage for a monumental and exciting fi nish.<br />
