Taking the VaccineBy: Rana Goodman / On My Soapboxam the first to admit that one of my biggest,I albeit childish fears is the idea of receivingshots. Until this year I never took a flu shot, itwas only after Dan dragged me toCVS and insisted that I do so lastmonth.It might be poetic justice that Inow, in my senior years, find I amdiabetic, thus giving myself dailyinsulin shots. Maybe that wasfate’s way of telling me to grow up.I am now actually happy aboutmy up-coming appointment toreceive the COVID-19 vaccine.Last March, when we all learnedabout this virus, I will admit that Iwas one of the sceptics who didn’treally believe it was anythingmore than the flu. It would soondisappear I told Dan.However, as the days, weeksand months elapsed, friends,fellow columnists, and casualacquaintances started to reportthat they had tested positive forCOVID-19. It suddenly dawnedon me that I was among the mostvulnerable group.Still, I was not all that worried; after all, several of my friends inSun City contacted the virus and came through it well, with no hospitalstay needed. However, with the start of the New Year we lost a dear friendand a Sun City Anthem icon to Covid.The news was “a wakeup call.” It was time to “put my big girl pantson.” Dan and I made our appointment.Make no mistake, I have harsh opinions on the way our officials aredolling out these injections.The tier order, now beingcalled “lanes” is absurd.Whoever set up thevaccine priorities seem tohave decided whose life ismore important than others.For example, one of mydaughter’s has asthma andchronic bronchitis, the otheris pre-diabetic with otherhealth issues. From what Ihave read, their respectivemedical conditions placesthem as being most veryvulnerable, however,because they are under theage of 70, they are far downthe line for the vaccine.Ahead of them areconvicts sitting in jail,politicians and someworkers who are considered“essential” even thoughthey are not on the frontlines or dealing with thepublic on a day-by-day basis.If you have not received your shot, please do what you have to inorder to join the senior brigade.Vegas Voice columnists Sandi & Evan Davis got their COVID shots.
