Protect Your HeartBy: Mary Richard / Health FitnessFebruary is “heart month.” What areyou doing to protect your heart? Are youexercising and having a healthy diet? Are youtrying to “destress” as much as possible?During 2020 we experienced major changes in our life - losing jobs,pandemic, and perhaps eating more than we should while hunkereddown in our homes.I admit that I ate more frequently and made more trips to therefrigerator than I should!Without my constant daily exercises, I tried to do walks around theneighborhood. I followed the three “Ws”: WATCH social distancing,WEAR a mask, and WASHING my hands.We all should continue with these cautions. And of course, receivingthe Covid vaccine will help!So now with all the stress of 2020 at an end and now as we start 2021,how do we protect our heart? It’s never too late to control the bingeeating and exercise more.Although some facilities have not fully opened, we can partake invirtual exercise classes, as I have done since the pandemic began whilesheltered in our homes. Virtual communication has become a way oflife for many and will most likely continue.I now make just one weekly trip to the grocery store, gathering upmy perishables. I’ve begun to cook and freeze meals more frequently.I’ve been conscientiously making healthier meals. When I arrivehome, I cut up the celery into bite-size pieces so that I can grab themeasier for snacks. And keeping apples and peanut butter makes for aneasy snack.If you are not into meditation, it could be a time to start - even slowly.During the day, I turn off the television, put on some calming music(thank you ALEXA!), sit in a comfortable chair and take some deepbreaths. Even 10-15 minutes of this may help to destress.And most importantly be grateful for what you have, not what youdon’t have.POSITIVE ATTITUDE AND HAPPY HEALTH TO ALL!Mary Richard is a long term supporter of senior fitness. Many suffer from depression and upto fifty per cent may suffer from insomnia.Where pharmaceutical drugs are often given for these problems, thedrugs are not without side effects. Sometimes these side effects can besevere and long lasting.In the case of antidepressants and sleep medications, patients maybecome addicted and going through withdrawal if the person decidesto go off the drugs can be anightmare.There is, however, andalternative means of treatinganxiety, depression andinsomnia backed up both byboth research and clinicalexperience. It is called Alphastimulation or alpha stim forshort.Alpha stim works by sendinga gentle electrical current across the brain increasing serotoninproduction which is low is people suffering from depression, anxietyand insomnia. The side effects are much less extreme and less oftenand there is no dependence or addiction.The unit looks like a small Walkman that can be hooked on to yourbelt or attached to a lanyard and carried around the neck. Rather thanhaving ear buds in your ear, the unit is attached by soft clips to yourear lobes.The current is so gentle that most people feel nothing. The unitsdesign allows you to work, sleep, watch TV or do daily activities whilereceiving treatment.Patients are instructed to use the unit for a minimum of 20 minutes aday although an hour would be better for most people. Those sufferingfrom anxiety begin to feel a reduction in their anxiety usually within4-5 days.Insomnia and depression begin to improve in about 3 weeks and theeffects of treatment are cumulative. As the unit is used over time, theeffects tend to be stronger and longer lasting.Eventually patients only need to use the unit every other day and afew times a week.Alpha stim is advocated by the US military. It has helped manysoldiers/veterans deal with PTSD and live more peaceful, moreproductive lives.If you suffer from chronic insomnia, anxiety, or depression, it mightbe something you want to look into it.Dr. Kyo Mitchell served as faculty at Bastyr University in Seattleand Wongu University in Las Vegas for over a decade.
