Every week, the Exit Zero crew goes for lunch (or dinner or, 

maybe even on occasion, breakfast) at one of Cape May’s 

excellent dining establishments. Everything is totally different 

on the food landscape these days, but in the interests of 

the public, we are still venturing out there and enjoying the 

victuals provided by local eateries. 

The place: El Pueblo Taqueria — the delicious authentic Mexican 

spot in the Cape Plaza Center on Bayshore Road in North Cape May. 

The exciting news: We spoke with Reuben, owner of El Pueblo, 

about some new things they have in store. Going into their fifth summer, 

Ruben’s Mexican cuisine will be available right in Cape May with 

a second location opening on Beach Avenue between the Original 

Fudge Kitchen and Convention Hall. Reuben grew up working in that 

area at Zoe’s and Henry’s on the Beach and told us he’s looking forward 

to being back in that area. It’s set to open sometime in the spring 

so, stay tuned for more beach service, takeout and seafood. Their 

North Cape May location will remain open year-round. 

The takeout debate: During our hiatus, we’ve made our rounds 

through the Cape May takeout scene and El Pueblo Taqueria has 

become a favorite. Recently, Kayla and Nicole have been in the habit 

of bringing their lunch from home — much to Jack’s dismay. We 

finally picked a day to treat ourselves to some delicious takeout. We 

also needed somewhere to write about, so we took full advantage of 

an opportunity to indulge a little. 

The food: Jack switched things up from his usual chicken and 

shrimp burrito and enjoyed a crispy and juicy chicken quesadilla. 

Kayla also tried something new with the chilaquiles bowl — a dish 

like nothing she’s ever had before. She was able to enjoy her leftovers 

the following day which is unheard of in this office. Nicole stuck with 

her usual — a carne asada burrito. We all could have taken a weeklong 

nap after this lunch. 

The takeaway: We decided a long time ago that El Pueblo Taqueria 

would be a consistent lunch stop. Ruben and his team put everything 

they have into each meal that leaves their kitchen. There are 

great things to come for this authentic spot — especially this summer 

on Beach Avenue.

hours about her turmoil. I’ve been having my 

own problems and want to talk to her, but she 

doesn’t even give me the courtesy of finishing 

my sentence before she brings the subject back 

to her. I’m thinking about ending the friendship. 

I just can’t take the negativity. Do you

It sounds as though she is getting more out 

of the friendship than you are and that circumstances 

have awakened you to that fact. Why 

not take a break? Tell her you are unable to walk 

or go out for the next month while you work out 

issues going on in your own life. Then, resume

Welcome to February 11, 2021! Or 

as I like to call it, January 408, 

2020. I’ve had five weeks off from 

writing, which is too long but 

also way, way, way too short. It 

went pretty quick, except for those days that 

felt like they would never end as I lay in bed 

staring at the ceiling watching the shadows 

creep and day turned into night turned into 

day again and we spin pointlessly through the 

vast oblivion of space on this little blue marble 

until the heat death of the universe or we 

strip this planet into a lifeless husk, whichever 

comes first. 

I also watched a lot of TV! 

It took 10 years but I finally watched Monk 

(eight seasons in three weeks if you’re questioning 

my commitment to sitting and staring). 

Tony Shalhoub is a national treasure, and 

this show has its moments, but it came at a 

weird time — the end of the ER and NYPD Blue 

Network Era and the dawn of the Golden Age 

of The Sopranos and Mad Men. Imagine Adrian 

Monk at the center of a Breaking Bad-esque 

AMC drama. How epic. 

I watched Monk on my new 50-inch 

Roku TV I got for Christmas and immediately 

mounted on my bedroom wall (by “immediate” 

I mean “mid-January.”) I thought it might 

be too big but I was gloriously wrong. It’s perfect 

and I don’t know how I lived my life before 

it. The user interface is fantastic, the picture 

is flawless and the warm radioactive hum 

lulls me to sleep every night as I flip endlessly 

through my Netflix queue. 

On a probably unrelated note, my vision 

has gotten so bad the last few months that I 

fear I may have Facebooked a lot of ;)’s when 

I meant :)’s. My apologies to anyone who 

thought I was flirting with them. Unless it 

made you feel better. 

I haven’t been writing but I HAVE been 

singing a bunch at Exit Zero Filling Station 

in this Winter of TNT. Tim Joyce and I played 

every Friday and Saturday, unless it was a 

super-important gig like Scots Dinner, in 

which case they hired an outside act (Philly’s 

John Byrne Band) or I got sick, which happened 

once, I think. I can’t remember, I was 

sick. Fortunately, John Byrne is excellent, as 

many Cape Mayans know, and the sublime 

Nancy Malcun stepped in when I was ill. 

Speaking of Nancy (2021 segue game 

starting strong), she will be joining TNT this 

Friday and Sunday for love songs and duets 

(and making us 72% more attractive as a unit). 

I’m also pleased to announce that she and I 

will be teaming up for a series of EZ gigs this 

summer, with my son Owen on drums. It will 

be his first professional gig if I don’t fire him 

during rehearsals. We’re learning an eclectic

Owen was always a good 

drummer in school, but when I 

heard him play a suite of music 

from Pixar’s The Incredibles at the 

2018 Jazz Festival I thought, “Holy 

shit, this kid’s got chops.” We owe 

this mostly to the tutelage of his 

mentor, Ray Deeley, a veteran 

who’s worked with all the greats 

(Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, 

no big deal). He saw a spark in 

Owen, took him under his wing 

and it made all the difference.

approach will be to training Owen 

for his first professional gig, 

think J.K. Simmons in Whiplash. 

I can’t wait to smack that kid 

across the face… (Also, did you 

know Whiplash star Miles Teller 

attended LCMR? He probably got 

slapped there too a lot.)

stopped in for a bite last weekend. 

He recently returned from 

Florida before leaving for Florida. 

He likes that place. Must be all 

the personal freedom. It was at 

his gas station that I saw a photo 

of myself, Randy Redelico and 

George Mesterhazy from a 2010- 

ish Terry O’ke show at Martini 

Beach hanging from a corkboard 

in one of the surrealist moments 

of my life. Like… what? Turns 

out Jerry and George were great 

friends. What a loss. 

Lastly this week, because I 

promised, my review of ABC’s 

Big Sky — it is the worst piece 

of shit on television. Admittedly, 

I have not watched every show 

on television, but I can’t imagine 

anything worse. It may be the 

worst show of all time, though, 

admittedly, I never watched 

Homies in Space. It’s Confirmation 

Bias Terror Porn dressed up as 

entertainment aimed at the 600k 

people who watch MSNBC. The 

super-evil villains are straight, 

white, cisgender males, one of 

whom is blonde. (ERMAHGERD! 

NERTZIES!) 

The heroes are strong, independent 

women of the Don’t- 

Need-No-Man variety, although 

the plot hinges on the female 

leads (one of whom is Black! Can 

you believe it? Black people exist!) 

literally fighting over a straight 

white BLONDE man played by the 

lone “star” of the show. He gets 

killed off in the first episode, the 

product of bad writing or a great 

agent. The kidnap victims speak 

in Planned Parenthood bumper 

stickers and one of them in trans! 

Can you believe it? Trans people 

exist! I thought they were unicorns. 

(The Unicorn, by the way, is 

an okay show. And one of my best 

friends is trans.) And can you 

believe the trans person is a victim 

with no agency who seems to 

exist only to add a third harmony 

when the sisters start singing? 

The WHITE sisters, one of whom 

is a super-cute blonde who gets 

by on her looks, the other a supernerdy 

brunette who wears glasses 

and is smart and stuff. 

This execrable dreck is 

brought to you by TV legend 

David E. Kelley, the mastermind 

behind such other left-wing fever 

dreams as Boston Legal and Ally 

McBeal. (I may be a rock-ribbed 

Republican, but I love me a good 

left wing fever dream. Just make 

it good, like Oliver Stone’s JFK 

or Chuck Wendig’s Wanderers.)

Pfeiffer and, wouldn’t you know 

it, her sister DeeDee has a part 

in Big Sky! 

The plot twists are surprising 

only if this is the first thing 

you’ve ever watched. I haven’t 

hate-watched a show like this 

since Glee. Though it’s nice to see 

John Carroll Lynch back on TV. He 

plays the casually racist, MAGAspewing 

Montana state trooper. 

I could go on, but I think you get 

my drift.

In an age of XBox or Nintendo, it’s surprising 

to see that one of the most popular 

shows is about an age old match. 

Queen’s Gambit, a Netflix original, centers 

around chess. No, not a computerized 

version — quite the old-fashioned kind. “Oh 

I’m not into chess,” you might say. I argue that 

you are — you just don’t know it. 

Beth Harmon (played by Anya Taylor-Joy) 

has had a tragic life. Her father abandoned the 

family. Her mother, a mathematics genius, 

has a death wish. You could say her mother 

fulfills that wish, leaving Beth orphaned at a 

young age. 

At the orphanage, Beth learns important 

life lessons. For example, make sure to save 

the morning pills in the small paper cup you’re 

handed for much later in the day. The show 

begins set in the 1950s, and it seems there 

were no rules about what drugs you could give 

to kids under the supposed “care” of the state. 

The narrative quickly goes into the stylish 

albeit heavily wallpapered 1960s.

learns ahead of the others and gets bored easily 

in class. She becomes an eraser clapper, so 

off to the basement for her chore. There she 

meets the janitor (played by Bill Camp) and 

sees a chess board. She practically has to beg 

him to teach her, and she’s a quick learner — a 

prodig. 

This seven-episode series captures the 

journey of an unlikely champion. She is an 

addict and breaking into a male-dominated 

world. She is a master strategist, making 

moves I admittedly don’t get. But, even if you 

don’t understand chess, you realize what the 

game is about. I tried to learn a few years ago. 

There were so many ways separate pieces 

on the board could be used (and ways they 

couldn’t be). I didn’t grasp it. But that didn’t 

stop me from “getting” the basics. 

All I needed to do was live a little, have a 

bad boss, experience a controlling relationship, 

or struggle to do good in a world full 

of takers. Soon enough I learned moves to 

counter an opponent, protect the “queen,” and 

maneuver toward success. Beth has demons 

she battles throughout the series — like we all 

do sometimes. She learns to overcome obstacles 

that could easily defeat her. 

Many of us have burdens, or opponents 

who try to dominate, hurt or oppress. You can 

stand down or accept the match. And if you 

can protect your sanity and never let them get 

to you...all there’s left to say is, “checkmate.”

Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu 

As you read, North America’s breeding 

birds are prepping for the breeding 

season ahead. Resident birds like 

the Downey Woodpecker are defining 

their territories with percussive 

drumming. Other species like tanagers, orioles 

and warblers are vacating the Northern 

Hemisphere during the winter and returning 

in the Spring. Now, the waterfowl that festooned 

Cape May wetlands and coastal areas 

are departing, moving at the speed of Spring 

to breeding areas in the Prairie Pothole region 

of Canada or the Arctic. 

In Central America, migratory songbirds 

are staging on the Yucatan Peninsula 

— the closest jump-off point for the trans- 

Gulf crossing — planting them back in North 

America. Sadly, there are fewer birds making 

this great “leap of faith” — songbird numbers 

have declined by close to 30 percent. Among 

some shorebird species, it is closer to 70 percent 

with species like Greater Yellowlegs and 

Red Knots particularly imperiled. 

The causes of bird decline are complicated, 

but all seem linked to the human 

manipulation of the planet as our species 

increases and we consume more resources to 

maintain ourselves. Imagine a game of musical 

chairs in which year by year, humans claim 

a greater number of chairs, forcing birds and 

other creatures to leave the game. That’s the 

bad news. The good news is that if humans are 

the problem, we are also the solution. Among 

all the earth’s inhabitants, only humans seem 

capable of modifying behavior to accommodate 

other living things. The market gunning 

era 0f the 1800s which killed off the Passenger 

Pigeon and Eskimo Curlew resulted in our 

species enacting International Migratory Bird 

Treaties as well as a U.S. Fish and Wildlife 

Service dedicated to the perpetuation of bird 

species. The recovery of many coastal species 

is recounted in Witmer Stone’s treatise, Bird 

Studies at Old Cape May. 

When given a choice between an ecologically 

rich world and an impoverished one, 

humans invariable choose the former. Living 

in Cape May places a special burden upon 

us to be responsible of the land. We need 

to maintain open space and keep birds in 

mind in our land-use practices. If we exercise 

restraint and wisdom, we may enjoy the 

riches of an ecologically rich planet. If not, 

I wonder how we are going to feel when our 

species wins the game, claiming the last chair 

in the global game of Musical Chairs.

Catherine Dugan’s guide to staying in... this week, enjoy a reenactment of a powerful speech! 

History doesn’t repeat itself, but it 

often rhymes, according to Mark 

Twain. He would find rhymes 

between today’s America and the 

country referenced by Ida B. Wells 

in her 1909 speech, Lynching, Our National Crime. 

Watch a reenactment on YouTube through the 

East Lynne Theater Company. 

Ida B. Wells, later Wells-Barnett, was 

a journalist, activist and researcher in the 

late 19th and early 20th centuries. According 

to her daughter, she was born into slavery 

and battled sexism, racism and violence 

throughout her life. Wells learned activism 

from her parents, who died of yellow fever 

in 1878, leaving Wells to raise her siblings in 

Tennessee. She became a teacher and after 

the lynching of a friend, began investigating 

mob violence. Wells is credited with pioneering 

many techniques of investigative journalism, 

including interviews with eyewitnesses, 

details from mundane public records and testimony 

of family members. Her published 

findings enraged her white neighbors, who 

burned her printing press and threatened her 

safety. Wells moved to Chicago, married and 

raised four children while continuing to report 

on violence against African Americans. She 

died on March 25th, 1931 and in 2020, was 

posthumously awarded the Pulitzer Prize for 

her courageous investigative journalism. 

In her speech to the National Association 

of Colored Women in New York City, Wells 

calls for a national response to lynching, 

asserting that a “national crime requires a 

national remedy.” She links the increase in 

lynching after reconstruction to voter suppression 

efforts led by groups like the Ku Klux 

Klan and the Midnight Raiders. She notes that 

a few whites were also lynched, and that no 

American should be subject to mob rule. She 

reports that unscrupulous newspapers used 

an imaginary “carnival of crime” to fire up 

lynch mobs when most lynchings were tied 

to minor infractions like quarreling, breaking 

quarantine and gambling. Wells reports that 

a man was lynched for voodoo, correcting 

the myth that the last American executed 

for witchcraft was in 1688. Wells argues that 

only a robust national response could keep 

the “life, liberty and property” of American 

citizens secure from mob rule.

monthly injection. Glattis is great with other 

animals and loves to be with her humans 

as much as possible. She would be good in a 

home with other dogs, cats and children.
