Every week, the Exit Zero crew goes for lunch (or dinner or, 

maybe even on occasion, breakfast) at one of Cape May’s 

excellent dining establishments. Everything is totally different 

on the food landscape these days, but in the interests of 

the public, we are still venturing out there and enjoying the 

victuals provided by local eateries. 

The place: George’s Place, the quaint eatery on the corner of Perry 

Street and Beach Avenue. 

The server: It’s always nice to see a familiar face in the middle of 

the workday while picking up some lunch. Nicole hasn’t seen Taylor 

McDermott for some time, and it was a nice surprise when she arrived 

at the restaurant. Taylor was introduced to the Kara Restaurant Group 

last year through one of their other restaurants, Vintage, and really 

enjoys the atmosphere of George’s. She filled us in on how well all 

their employees are treated and that there is always work available 

within the Kara Group. They are preparing to hire for the upcoming 

season at all their establishments. 

The food: As always, it took us some time to settle on what we 

would be eating for lunch, but we were all very happy with our final 

choices. Jack enjoyed the delicious Havarti panini while Kayla scarfed 

down the falafel pita, a dish she’d previously been nervous to try. 

Nicole had the turkey and brie sandwich — she’s never had brie before 

and also knows what she’d been missing out on. We all went on a 

health kick and enjoyed side salads with our lunch. Side note — under 

no circumstances is anyone allowed to ask Jack if he’d like French fries 

(he won’t allow himself to choose them over salad, but still hates to 

say no). You will be shamelessly picked on for at least a couple weeks. 

The special deal: George’s takeout business has been doing very 

well under the current circumstances and with it also being a slower 

time of the year for Cape May. They have been offering a buy-one, 

get-one deal for all takeout and delivery orders since March 2020, and 

it’s still going strong. Buy any breakfast, lunch or dinner and receive 

the second meal free, seven days a week. 

The takeaway: George’s Place in Cape May, along with the Kara 

Restaurant Group’s other locations, have years of experience serving 

Cape May County. The team is always coming up with delicious menu 

items for breakfast, lunch and dinner. It’s a must-try!

Donna, Laurie, Kathleen and Bonnie of Family Promise Cape May County received a meal at Exit Zero Filling Station last weekend as part of our FEED OUR 

FRIENDS program. Kathleen and Laurie have been with the organization which helps families who are experiencing homelessness since they were established in 

2009. They were nominated by their colleague Maryann who told us how these women go above and beyond and are there for the families 24/7. Laurie has even 

been in the delivery room with one of the mothers in the program. They enjoyed their meal of Butter Chicken Pot Pie, Christmas Curry, Bang Bang Chicken and 

Shrimp, creme brulee and peanut butter pie in one of our ski tents.

and written assignments. Pre-COVID, I would 

have those written assignments done in the 

classroom. Now parents are shamelessly doing 

their child’s homework. One student even 

asked if she could get an extension because 

her mother didn’t have time to “help her” until 

the next day. And she refuses to come into the 

classroom on the two days. What do I do with

My ex-husband is making a fuss about 

our daughter getting engaged over Valentine’s 

Day weekend without a heads up and without 

her fiancé asking his permission. Are we in the 

middle of a Jane Austen novel? I don’t want to 

tell my daughter, but I suspect he’s using it as 

an excuse to not pay for the wedding. It’s not 

like he’s been a devoted father over the last 

nine years, especially since he started having 

kids with his new wife. He paid for her college 

education but not without a court fight. However, 

he did find out on social media and I do 

not want the wedding to be a dramathon. How 

should I handle this? — Fretting in Cape May 

Dear Fretting 

It was a misstep to not at least inform him 

beforehand. The Answer Lady suggests your 

daughter and her fiancé invite Pops to brunch 

at the Mad Batter. After a couple of mimosas, 

apologize for the oversight. Her fiancé should 

explain that in his exuberance to ask his 

daughter to marry him, he forgot his manners. 

Ask Pops right there for his blessing. He will 

hopefully be flattered by the attention and forgive 

them. If he still wants to play the Diva, pay 

the check and politely wish him well.

Welcome to another glorious week 

in Cape May, where we’ve had 17 

different types of snow in the last 

seven days, with almost none of it 

accumulating anywhere except in 

my gutter, which was overflowing because it was 

full of ice and in which I nearly lost three fingers 

to frostbite trying to clear it out (for some reason, 

as a 28-year citizen of Cape May, I own neither 

gloves nor boots. Discuss.) 

This marked two weeks out of two delivering 

through inclement weather; week one was 

a nasty wind and rain storm, week two was 

varying degrees of falling ice. (I’m pretty sure 

I saw Kurt Russell warming up the helicopter 

to take us to the other research base and okay 

that’s a pretty deep cut reference to 1982’s The 

Thing, which is the finest sci-fi horror flick ever 

made and a top 10 movie of all time.) I’m hoping 

this week you’re reading Undertow after I’ve 

traversed rivers of lava and The Rock will have to 

play me in the movie because he’s the celebrity 

that most resembles me. 

Apology of the Week: To my fellow Exit Zero 

Delivery Ranger, Melissa O’Donnell. I’ve delivered 

something like the last 150 weeks of Exit Zero 

to our outlying distributors and Thursday was 

the first time I ever took too many and not just 

a few too many but an even 100 too many (that’s 

four bundles!). We were able to mitigate the 

damage fairly quickly, but how in the hell did I 

make a dumbass mistake like that? (I can almost 

hear the 1000s of people yelling, “Because you’re 

a dumbass!” echoing on the breeze.) 

Thank You of the Week: To the Collier’s 

gang. I can’t say why, just thanks. (Whew…) 

A Brief Delivery Driver’s Prayer: Oh dear 

lord in heaven above, please let construction on 

the Wildwood Crest Bridge be completed by the 

time the Two Mile opens and this humble delivery 

driver must cross it. Do this and I’ll never 

drin… I’ll never smok… I’ll never do drug… I’ll 

never eat kiwi again. Amen. 

What’s happening next to Big Lots in North 

Cape May? Anyone? I know we’re getting a 

Chipotle in Rio Grande which, if history serves, 

will have a 24/7 drive-thru wraparound for 30 

days after it opens. Inquiring minds want to 

know.

Boombox) and as I opened the 

door a party of seven women 

started hooting and hollering that 

“the stripper is here!” and other 

such ribaldry. I was not surprised 

to look up and see it was the Janis 

Quiggle Coalition, who gather and 

barnstorm through town every 

few weeks, terrorizing local waiters. 

Never have I felt so violated. 

(And, as ever, it was great to see 

you ladies.) 

So I’m pulling a couple shifts 

a week at Exit Zero (covering for 

some crumb bum named OWEN, 

who is continuing his virtual education, 

the nerve…) and, while it’s 

hard for me to be a positive guy 

sometimes (no, it’s true…) I have 

to say it’s heartwarming seeing 

and hearing (I answer phones a 

lot) so many of you who supported 

us when the world shut down last 

March and continue to do so nearly 

a year later, on week 50 of Two 

Weeks to Flatten the Curve. We 

truly appreciate it. Except for you, 

Bob Broomall. You’re banned. (Just 

kidding, but boy did I feel silly saying 

that to your brother Bill last 

week when I saw Broomall on the 

caller ID.) 

Every time I park my car, Bixby 

chimes in that she can remember 

where I parked and I’m like damn 

Bixby, why you so thirsty? 

The real joy of having a TV in 

my bedroom now is the emotional 

rollercoaster of losing and then 

finding the Roku remote 17 times 

a night. 

It’s taken six years but my cat, 

Xena, may finally be warming up 

to me. (Hmmm, that’s about how 

long it took Cathrine.) She likes 

to hop up on the bed next to me, 

pretend she doesn’t notice me then 

flop on her side for me to pet, only 

to lace my hand and forearm with 

deep claw marks a few minutes 

later. (Hmmm, that sounds like my 

first few dates with Cathrine.) But I 

feel like we understand each other 

now; I do what she likes and I won’t 

get injured. (Hmmm…) 

Speaking of Cathrine, because 

I write this column on Saturdays, 

five days before you read it, and am 

bad at math (see paragraph three), 

I neglected to wish her a happy 

birthday last week. So, happy 

birthday, Cathrine! We have now 

entered that glorious three-week 

period where she is eight years 

older than me instead of seven and 

I get to make cradle-robbing jokes. 

She really loves it. 

It also turns out that my middle 

son, Jackson, turned 18 last week. 

He’s now a legal adult! Which 

means I can stop worrying about 

when I’ll be served with emancipation 

papers and start worrying 

about when he’s going to dramatically 

move out in a spectacular 

blaze of glory because I just don’t 

understand him. Happy birthday, 

son! 

Tish Roussos Moment of 

the Week: I said, “Hey Tish, I like 

your stripper mask” about her 

shiny, sequined Covid stopper. 

“Thanks!” She replied. “I’m feeling 

extra slutty!” She… she probably 

wouldn’t want me to print that, 

but… come on, that’s hilarious. I 

won’t tell you what she says about 

my new cardigan. It’s filthy. 

Weekly Beard & Weight 

Watch: After the burning humiliation 

of having to type 242 last 

week, I tightened things up a bit 

and weighed in at 240. Not great, 

but I’m in a good head space, ready 

to get back at it. I’m also working 

on a new beard. I’m going to actually 

try to groom this one and treat 

it with product so I can look as silky 

smoothe as EZ bartender Gordon 

Sterling, the heppest cat in town.

Cape May Stage looks forward to opening 

its beautiful Robert Shackleton 

Playhouse on June 24 with the hilarious 

and timely Ann by Holland Taylor, 

directed by Marlena Lustik. The 

play stars Kate McCauley Hathaway as Ann 

Richards, the former Texas Governor. 

Producing Artistic Director, Roy 

Steinberg, celebrates the return of live theatre. 

“We will have the highest standards of 

protocols to ensure the health and safety of 

our patrons, artists and crew,” he said. “Things 

may look rather different with shields at the 

box office, virtual programs, social distancing 

and masks. We plan to follow all directions of 

wiping down seats and rest rooms after every 

use. The one thing that will remain the same is 

the high quality of production values.” 

Ann was written and performed by 

Taylor in New York to enthusiastic reviews. 

Hathaway was one of the producers in New 

York and Marlena Lustik says, “Kate has 

the perfect energ and charm to bring her 

own interpretation to the role.” Lustik and 

Hathaway collaborated on At Wit’s End about 

Erma Bombeck — one of the most popular 

plays here. The theme of “social justice” was 

intended for the 2020 season and still resonates. 

Ann will likely run through summer. 

Last o the Red Hot Lovers, written by Neil 

Simon and directed by Roy Steinberg, has a 

special twist. The play is usually performed 

with three different actresses, but we plan to 

use one versatile actress in all three roles — 

making the artistic statement that the main 

character goes out with the same person 

repeatedly. “We’ll all need to laugh after our 

current period,” says Steinberg. The use of just 

two actors is also a choice to limit the number 

of people who can spread the virus. 

The world premiere of Adopt a Sailor – the 

Holiday Edition will use Charles Evered’s original 

text as a jumping off place to set the play 

at Christmas time with the suggestion that 

the sweet and funny visiting sailor may be an 

angel. It is a family friendly story of a New 

York couple who invite a sailor for dinner and 

forget about the invitation only to find that 

the sailor may have special insights for them. 

The couple will be played by Marlena Lustik 

and Roy Steinberg who share Broadway credits 

and were last seen in The Lion in Winter 

together. 

All is subject to change depending on 

government regulations and union contractual 

restrictions but knowing we can laugh 

together in a safe circumstance is something 

we can all look forward to.

Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu 

WARNING, you are entering an 

area known to be infested with 

bird watchers. Many Cape May 

visitors are unaware that it is the 

most celebrated birding destination 

on the planet. By choosing to be here, 

you willingly put yourself in a situation where 

encounters with bird watchers is unavoidable. 

You can recognize birders from ordinary 

tourists by their donning of binoculars and 

cameras with foot-long lenses. Often two or 

more birders will be standing just off the trail, 

peering intently into the foliage. Just ease on 

by, trying not to make any sudden movements 

that may flush the bird they are studying. 

Birders know you are there. Their hearing is 

acute and peripheral vision off the charts. 

There is something of a seasonality to 

birders. They are most common in Spring, 

Fall and Winter. Summer is off-season for 

most bird study, however, fall starts in July 

with the first southbound shorebirds and 

extends into November when hawks migrate. 

In winter, birders are most often found on 

beaches, scanning offshore for assorted sea 

ducks and wintering water birds. 

Fascinated by their expensive spotting 

scopes and looks of intense contraction, 

casual beach strollers may try and engage 

birders in conversation by saying something 

innocent like, “How far can you see with that 

thing?” Or worse, try and chummy up to the 

birder by asking if they are seeing any Ivorybilled 

Woodpeckers, out there?” 

Careful, this is a wild birder, easily provoked 

by unwanted banter while they are 

trying to find the reported Harlequin Duck. 

Watch for these danger signs. Eyes rolled 

skyward or squeezed shut while shaking their 

head back and forth. 

The proper way to approach a birder is 

to ask whether they have “something good” 

out there. “Good” in birdereese means “rare.” 

If the birder senses genuine interest on your 

part, they may invite you to peek through 

the scope. Be careful not to jostle it. Step up 

to the eyepiece, try not to fog the lens with 

your breath and adjust the focus to get a clear 

image. Whether you see anything or not, say 

“nice.” You’ll ease the birder’s guilt for spending 

so much money on piece of equipment. 

If you do see a male Harlequin Duck, it will 

blow your mind and you’ll wonder what other 

colorful birds are lurking beneath your awareness 

threshold.

Catherine Dugan’s guide to staying in... this week, train your dog for more human interaction! 

Dogs have been almost medicinal 

during the pandemic. They help 

people to deal with loneliness, 

encourage us to get outside in the 

sunshine, and make sure we get our 

exercise. They may have also been a little 

spoiled during these strange times — they’ll 

need help to greet the humans of Cape May. 

Experts say you can train your dog in six 

weeks — same time that Cape May might 

begin to see some normalcy. Use this time to 

get your dog ready to deal with more people, 

more noise and less time with you. It’s also a 

good time to find alternate places to walk and 

play because the beaches and promenade are 

closed to dogs from April through October. 

If you’ve been very isolated, start by making 

unusual noises around the house — turn 

on a power tool or lawnmower and show your 

dog there is nothing to fear. Acquaint your dog 

with other people by donning something like 

a trench coat, hat and umbrella for your next 

walk, or recruit a friend who uses a wheelchair 

or stroller if you don’t. Make your dog 

comfortable around humans who aren’t you. 

Establish a routine that includes plenty of 

exercise — routines help dogs feel secure, and 

a tired dog is a happier dog. Consider crate 

training — many dogs enjoy the sanctuary of 

the crate if used right, and a crate is a good 

way to keep your dog safe when you leave the 

house. Get the dog accustomed to the signals 

that you’re leaving like picking up your car 

keys. Even if you don’t have any place to go, 

leave for a little while. Return home calmly 

— hang up your coat before you greet the dog. 

It will teach them that leaving is no big deal. 

Most trainers assert that humans are the 

weak links in the dog training regimen. Dogs 

are pretty trainable, and they want to please, 

but we need us to resist those puppy dog eyes 

and stick to the plan. Don’t worry that you 

“can’t teach an old dog new tricks.” Dogs like 

the stimulation of learning, so old dogs can 

learn new behaviors. For really old dogs, be 

sure you aren’t trying to teach them something 

that hurts their aging joints or using 

signals that their aging eyes can’t follow. Your 

senior dog may no longer “sit” on a hard floor 

or may be less motivated by treats. 

Don’t get discouraged if your new “pandemic 

puppy” doesn’t respond to the techniques 

that worked on your other dogs — 

maybe the clicker that works for Rover isn’t 

right for Fido, who responds to the smack of 

a newspaper against a palm or a squirt from 

a water bottle. Be consistent. Together, you’ll 

find what works.
