NHK “Bi no TsuboThe Japanese Lighting”
Kaoru Mende appeared on the NHK Education
Network program “Bi no Tsubo” featuring Japanese
light.The feature was shot in a Japanese-style
house at the Fuchu City Nature Museum. In the
dimness of a traditional Japanese-style room,
Mende held a lantern in one hand and, reciting
passages from Junichiro Tanizaki’s book “Inei
Raisan,” spoke about the beauty and importance of
light and shadow.

NHK “News Watch 9”
After an 8-year absence, the holiday illumination
along Omotesando was revived in 2006. Designed
by LPA, Kaoru Mende was interviewed on the NHK
program “ News Watch 9.” Without being obligated
to past illumination design concepts, LPA proposed
softly glowing lantern in the image of “Japanese
Light” to adore the 1km long tree-lined street.
Mende spoke freely on the behind the scenes
workings of the project, as members battled with
the amount and quality of light.
