Light for Color and Lanterns for Prayer
Every year on August 6 atomic bomb victims are remembered in
a peace memorial ceremony in Hiroshima. On this night thousands
of lanterns are set afloat down the Motoyasu River near the Hiroshima
Peace Memorial as part of the remembrance and prayer for peace.
We also surveyed the lighting environments of downtown Hiroshima
and World Heritage Site, Itsukushima Shinto Shrine.
A Blend of the Past and Present
Taipei 101, the world’s tallest building, looming over the east end of
Taipei. Off the main streets old buildings line the side streets creating
unique little neighborhoods. Every night is like a festival at the Shilin
Night Market with the jimble-jamble of lighting. Day or night, the
streets of Taipei are alive with activity as the old and new are
perfectly blended.
Shinjuku. A Urban Light Trap
The 24-hour, sleepless district of Tokyo, Shinjuku and Kabukicho,
are a flood of lights that just keep getting brighter and brighter as the
night goes on. Entire facades are covered in lights with neon signs
and big screen images to top off the scene. With redevelopment
near the south entrance of the station in progress, we surveyed the
surroundings of this Tokyo hub station.
