The Answer Lady
Wise answers to perplexing questions
The Answer Lady invites inquiries from
gentle readers on all manner of relationship
quandaries, matters of the
heart and ethics. If you’d like to send
a query, write to info@exitzero.us. Or,
simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate
the wisdom herein.
Dear Answer Lady
I’m in my mid-40s and decided that I do not
want to be “linked in.” I know I sound old and
inflexible, but I don’t want to be on Facebook.
I own a flip phone that I rarely use. I have tech
skills for work so I can use zoom for meetings
and email to work with my colleagues. I do not
text, message or FaceTime and this has been a
source of irritation with my colleagues but not
my boss. I am tired of apologizing for this conscious
decision and wonder if you have some
magic phrase I can use to shut my critics up?
— Tech Rebel
Dear Rebel
The Answer Lady would remind your
colleagues that you have one responsibility
and that is to do your job to best of your ability
which you seem to be doing. You might also
tell them that your days are far more pleasant
and nights far more comfortable without a
smart phone attached to your derriere 24-7.
Who knows, they might emulate your behavior.
In the meantime, give yourself a break. The
Answer Lady thinks it is time for a trip to Chez
Michel for a tasty French treat.
Dear Answer Lady
I adopted a puppy last winter when COVID
restrictions were first imposed and at the same
time started working from home instead of
going into the office. I went back to the office
March 1 full time. I have been with Mr. Peanut
night and day for nearly a year and I’m worried
he’ll have separation anxiety. What can I do to
alleviate it? I did ask if I could bring Mr. Peanut
to work and my boss laughed, which I took for a
no. — Worried Dog Mom
Dear Worried
Girl, it sounds like you have separation
anxiety. Institute a program where you both
retrain yourselves a la Pavlov — the Russian
psychologist known primarily for his work
with conditioning therapy in dogs, but it works
with people too. Leave the house every day for
one hour, then two and work up to six hours.
Be strong and do something fun. Lunch at
Lucky Bones or shopping on the Washington
Street Mall. On a warmer day, sit outside at
Harbor View Restaurant and look at the boats
whilst enjoying a cocktail. When you get home,
reward Mr. Peanut with a nice walk and oneon-one
time. Breathe. Mr. Peanut will survive.
CAPE MAY BREWERY
Friday, September 17
ARGENTINA WINES
Friday, October 15
Every week, the Exit Zero crew goes for lunch (or dinner or,
maybe even on occasion, breakfast) at one of Cape May’s
excellent dining establishments. Everything is totally different
on the food landscape these days, but in the interests of
the public, we are still venturing out there and enjoying the
victuals provided by local eateries.
The place: Fins Bar and Grille — the large, navy building on the
corner of Carpenters Lane and Decatur Street.
The vibe: It was a calm afternoon at Fins but a delightful experience
when we ran inside to grab our food. Music played throughout
the dining room, laughs were shared, and everyone seemed genuinely
happy to be there. The uplifting atmosphere was both inviting and
refreshing after the last few dreary days we’ve had in Cape May.
The crew: Cassidy and Kenny have been with Fins since day one
and a new Fins server Bobby Jo recently came back into the restaurant
business. They told us how much they miss the friendly faces of their
local bar crowd and can’t wait for things to return to normal. Everyone
is actually looking forward to the summer parking battle along
the Washington Street Mall.
The summer set up: Thankfully, most of the outdoor-dining
setups for local restaurants creatively introduced last year will stick
around another summer. Fins’ dining tent along Decatur Street will
remain open and they will offer limited indoor dining as they are
allowed along with takeout.
The food: Jack wasted no time deciding what he’d like and went
with the Mediterranean salad and, as always, added some grilled
chicken. The season of Lent has begun — no meat for Nicole on Fridays
until Easter — so she opted for the fish tacos. Cathrine went with
the same. They were both surprised to find French fries came with
their lunch. We had no idea so we consider it a healthy-ish lunch — it
wouldn’t be right to waste them...
The takeaway: It’s looking like Cape May will have an exciting
summer that is just as safe and accommodating as the last. Despite
the challenges we’ve faced, the crew at Fins remains positive and
excited to get back to long days, longer nights and the great people
who keep them running all season long. Fins is currently open
Wednesday through Monday for takeout and limited indoor dining.

Undertow
Terry O’Brien’s legendary column... social satire, shameless plugs — and general self-indulgence
Welcome to March of 2021, a year
that so far has me looking back
on the calm stability of 2020 with
gauzy nostalgia. It’s nearly spring
which means only one thing —
Karen Mirabile season. Karen is my accountant
and delivers tax miracles unto me every
year. If you like your accountant, you can keep
your accountant, but you should definitely
switch over to Karen at Cape Bookkeeping. For
every new client I refer, she guarantees another
$10,000 in my return and can do the same for
you! (Promises made in previous sentences may
not be real, but Karen is great.)
Weekly Beard & Weight Watch: The problem
with writing my column on Saturdays
instead of Sunday is that I tend to have a few
(5) adult beverages at my TNT gig at Exit Zero
Filling Station and indulge in a little rock star
debauchery at Wawa or Chen’s Garden, wherever
Tim steers us on our way home. (Yes,
we carpool. Yes, Wawa burgers are legit.) This
tends to skew the numbers when I step on the
scale, so what had been a “feeling pretty good
about myself” 237.5 on Wednesday became a
“WHY TERRY! WHY ARE YOU SO FAT AND
STUPID!” 238.5 on Saturday. This may have
been accompanied by some tears and the wagging
of an angry finger in the mirror. Okay, that’s
an over-dramatization. I was bummed, but I
am, in fact, in a very good state of mind. As I told
EZFS neighbor David Dee, who, along with wife
Fay, always asks after my well-being, I’ve got
Undertow to keep me accountable to you, the
most intelligent, discerning, best looking readers
on Earth. The beard? Eh. I’ll give it another
week or two and see how I feel. It’s possible I’m
just not a beard guy.
Speaking of the best readers in the world,
Jim Faulkner, wife Lisa and daughter Hannah
popped in to EZFS for some dinner and TNT, but
this paragraph is about Jim, who buried me in
such effusive praise about my singing and writing
that he is now the clubhouse leader in the
World’s Friendliest Stalker Open. (Wendy and
Randy Redelico, you better get back down here
and shower me with praise and cash…) Jim is a
lovely man with a lovely family. I’m just not used
to people being nice to me. I married an Italian.
Then there’s Kevin and Janet Perusing of
Oakland NJ, simply one of the nicest couples I’ve
encountered in my days as the “T” half of “TNT”.
He’s always ready with a smile and a handshake,
she lights up every room she enters. Which is
why it pains me so to make fun of them, because
as polished as they seem, on the inside they are
dirty, pinko, commie Grateful Dead hippies
Thank you, Alyssa! (Last name unknown,
her dinner receipt just said “V”.) I WILL continue
saying what I want (or at least as much
as I can slip past my editor) for as long as I
can. I sometimes worry about the
Cancel Crowd hunting me down,
then I remember I’m not important
enough to cancel. Yet.
Unsuspecting Person of the
Week: My Thursday magazine
delivery routine finds me at Avalon
Bagel in North Cape May with
about a half-dozen stops left, so
I order some delicious breakfast
sandwiches (my go-to: pork roll,
egg and cheese on a whole wheat
everything, my carb load for the
week) and Joanie McCullen, who
calls me “hon,” making her my
new best friend (sorry, Tish), was
trusting enough to give her name
to this bald, ink-stained stranger
finishing up his delivery route. If a
bald, ink-stained stranger on his
delivery route asks you for your
name, I wouldn’t give it.
Customer Service of the Week:
I called Cape Winds Florist for a
last-minute flower arrangement
for Cathrine’s birthday last weekend
(um, please don’t tell Cathrine
it was last-minute) and I was TOO
LATE! THEY WERE CLOSED! But,
possibly sensing the fear and desperation
in my voice, they stayed
on site long enough for me to save
my marriage with a beautiful collection
of daisies she absolutely
loved. Thank you, Cape Winds
Florist.
I began watching Mr. Mercedes
on the recommendation of EZFS
bartender Gordon Sterling, whom
I love, but whom I now wish to
poke with a sharp stick. Sometime
during the Bush years, Stephen
King lost his goddamn mind and
has been unable to craft a story that
is not rife with lazy stereotypes.
And seeing the great Brendan
Gleeson in an American network
drama this poor makes me sad.
Damn you, Gordon. Damn you to
hell. (Update: Unsurprisingly, this
miserable show was developed by
David E. Kelley, the genius behind
Big Sky, which I hate more than
the ’86 Celtics. Big Sky will now be
roasted in every column this year.
I hope it gets three more seasons.)
If you’re reading this on
Thursday, March 4, publication
day, you have three days to get me
a birthday present. If you’re reading
this AFTER March 4, well, you
better hurry your ass up. In lieu
of gifts, you can send sweet, cold,
hard cash to my PayPal or Venmo.
They’re both under terryoke1. Terry
O’ke… remember that guy? If I’d
known how that name would
come to haunt me… I should have
called myself something generic
like Karaoke Guy, but no, I had to
be clever… “Here Lies Terry O’ke.
The Dumbest Smart Guy That Ever
Lived. 1970-2022.”
Sibling of the Week: My sister
Erin recently visited and her
husband Larry requested a Peter
Frampton song. My late brother
Greg idolized Frampton; looked
like him, sang like him, played guitar
like him, maintained a 28-inch
waist like him (bastard). As you
know, I’m an emotional guy and
have trouble getting through songs
like “Chicken Fried” without shedding
a tear, but I somehow managed
to squeak “Baby I Love Your
Way” without cracking as I sang
my dead brother’s favorite song for
my sister. It was later, during the
Avett Bros’ beautiful “Murder in
the City”, which is about fathers
and brothers and family and, well,
Tim Joyce earned his keep carrying
me through that song. (I’m a crybaby,
yes, but I defy you to listen to
that song without getting misty.)
Anyway, great seeing you, sis!
Come again when you can’t stay
so long. (I’m kidding, of course.
I love seeing my siblings. Except
Mike. I’m a little sick of that guy.
And Chris, who’s gone a little crazy
since Trump. And Dan, who never
joins my bands when I ask him.
But… where was I going with this?)
Lastly this week, it appears
that Larry Crinkle might be making
a comeback! I don’t want to say
too much for fear of jinxing it, but...
watch this space. We’ll know more
in about a month, but since Larry
has a very devoted fan base here
in Cape May (right?), I thought I’d
share.
’Til next week, don’t get caught
in The Undertow.

FEED OUR FRIENDS
Sammy Downes of Exit Zero Filling Station delivered a meal earlier this week to Lori, Scott and Madison Nuttall and Kelsey Lewis as part of our FEED OUR
FRIENDS program. They have not been able to dine out since the pandemic began due to a family member being high risk. Lori’s sister Dana thought the family
would love to have a meal from their favorite restaurant delivered to them. They enjoyed lobster and shrimp mac and cheese, buffalo and sticky Thai wings, buffalo
cauli bites, chopper salad with salmon, chicken fingers and peanut butter pie. Mom and dad washed it down with a Wicked Watermelon and the Cuke.
Do you know someone who you’d like to nominate? It could be someone who has been a great volunteer and community servant, or someone who just needs a
break. The ONLY way to nominate someone is to write to info@exitzero.com with FEED OUR FRIENDS in the subject line. Give us the name, address and cell number.
Plus a sentence on why they deserve it. We will do the rest! PLEASE NOTE: We need to restrict this to the Cape Mays and the Villas. No further north, please.
Let me take you back to 1981. I was a
freshman at a Catholic high school
in Philadelphia. Our English teacher
tells us to choose a topic for a public
presentation. The topic I selected
was “History of American Slang.” What can
I say? I had recently gotten a new book, The
Dictionary of American Slang, and I thought the
topic would be interesting. Yes, I was that
nerd who bought dictionaries with my paper
route money. That and Little Debbies. Don’t
judge me.
Surprisingly, the teacher — a priest no
less — agreed. It was my day to present. The
speech was complete with a tasteful string of
modest cuss words built up to one well-placed
F-bomb. My classmates cringed and looked
back at the teacher. He was not amused.
“Oh, Mr. Sims… Mr. Sims!” he began
loudly. “No no! See young Martin sitting right
in front of you? He’s offended by such words.
I did not know you were presenting on this.” I
responded, “I told you my presentation was
about slang words.” His face got even more
The Movie Column
By arts columnist Tom Sims
red. “No, this will not do,” he said. “You are to
present next week, about… hmmm… about
the metamorphosis of a butterfly.” True story.
Fast forward to the beginning of 2021.
Netflix introduces a new show called History
of Swear Words, hosted tongue-in-cheek by
Nicolas Cage. Forty years after I was censored
by my English teacher, I am vindicated!
There’s only one season of the show so far,
and it has six episodes. Each episode focuses
on a distinct curse word. Oh, do you want to
know what they are? Wait, I’m not falling for
that trap! Suffice it to say they were all in my
speech which, if permitted, would have likely
gotten me an A plus!
The show brings in various perspectives
on swearwords. History of them for certain,
but also current use and analysis from comedians,
actors and bonafide language historians.
If you’re not easily offended, it is pure
entertainment. Well... maybe not so pure.
As Kurt Vonnegut said as a fictional
narrator in his book, Hocus Pocus, “Profanity
and obscenity entitle people who don’t want
unpleasant information to close their ears and
eyes to you.” Or as I have loosely translated,
“Cursing gives some people a reason not to
listen to you.” The truth is, I have struggled
with profanity my entire life. I can have a potty
mouth. My goal is to use these words carefully
and without malice.
Incidentally, I got an 80 on the “effing”
butterfly speech — that teacher was out to
get me!
Bird Droppings
Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu
As many readers are aware, North
America’s breeding bird population
has declined by 29 percent in the
past 50 years. This dramatic and
unprecedented decline has alarmed
scientists. The decline is widespread, involving
multiple habitat types and over a dozen
bird families. Some families, like the shorebirds
have suffered a 70 percent decline as has
the greatly loved Baltimore Oriole. The cause
of the decline is linked to our species manipulation
of the planet to suit our ambitions
including deforestation, the proliferation of
plate glass along key migratory corridors,
domestic free-roaming cats and automobiles.
Sixty years ago, a heroic biologist, Rachel
Carson, warned the world that we were heading
for a “Silent Spring” unless we stopped
applying a man-made insecticide, DDT. Her
frightening message bought us 60 years. Now
we face a new crisis. The solution is not as
simple as banning a chemical, it depends on
the buy in of all of us. We must reduce our
imprint upon the planet and try to accommodate
birds and other wildlife.
One way to reduce the slaughter is to
keep outside screens up year-round. Another
useful adjustment is to place your bird feeders
away from windows and patio doors. We
had a Cooper’s Hawk working our yard that
learned to herd birds into our patio door.
“Ping” and another White-throated sparrow
becomes a statistic. We soaped up the window
and greatly solved the problem.
Cats are different. Our native birds in
the Northeast have no defense against small
feline predators. Don’t even think that your
pampered, overweight tabby is an exception
to the rule. Indoor cats lead longer, healthier
lives so for their sakes and the birds who need
our help, keep your kitty indoors.
The problem of cars killing birds is hard
to address. Human reaction time is often not
fast enough to avoid hitting birds. Bird strikes
by automobiles are not uniformly distributed.
Like deer, there are crossing points that are
used more than others. One killing zone is
Sunset Boulevard, west of the South Cape
May Meadows. Most highway fatalities occur
in winter and during migration.
If you see a deer-crossing sign, be alert for
birds. If birds are darting across the road, be
vigilant. Where there is one, there are others.
Avoid tossing food out the window. It attracts
scavengers which attract hunting hawks and
owls with tragic results. If we all do a little to
protect birds, it will help. And maybe we can
avoid a “Silent Spring” and cancelled skies.
The Activity Column
Catherine Dugan’s guide to staying in... this week, explore Higbee Beach!
I’m fascinated by the periodic appearance
of the railroad tracks along Cape May’s
bayshore. The “ghost tracks,” installed in
1905, are the bones of bygone industry
that remind me of the impermanence of
everything. They are oddly comforting.
The old railroad tracks served the Cape
May Sand Company in the early 20th century,
when sand used for glassmaking and
cement products was a more valuable commodity
than sand used for sunbathing and
kite flying. From the beginning, the ghost
tracks witnessed history. Their existence was
threatened by periodic washouts as early as
1907. Their beaches were used as a proving
ground for ammunition during World War
One. They had an up-close look at the waxed
leather-and-canvas boots that gave bootleggers
their name as Prohibition-era smugglers
carried cases of Canadian liquor through the
scrubby pine. Later, they carried hoppers for
the Harbison-Walker Magnesite Plant, sending
raw materials for furnaces and kilns to
Pennsylvania. The tracks were a hidden witness
to birdwatchers and nude bathers for
years until a nor’easter revealed them and
gave us a new reason to explore Higbee beach.
The ghost tracks are not the only pieces of
the past to haunt this bit of shoreline. Thomas
Higbee, a tavern keeper whose heirs ignored
his wish to rest in peace on his namesake
beach, reportedly roams the sand with his
black dog. Two Native American boys are
said to gather shellfish at the mouth of the
old New England Creek — now the Cape May
Canal. Offshore, a colonial-era cemetery lies
under the waves, its occupants are occupied
by keeping an eye on swimmers. Horseshoe
crabs, our local living fossils, dot the beach
in late spring. In summer, sand tiger sharks
mind their business offshore and dolphins
show off for anyone who is paying attention.
On the sand, local birds enjoy the last weeks
of winter before the migrating birds start their
journey north. Humans enjoy this quiet beach,
many with their dogs. Joggers, photographers,
and the occasional horse find room to spread
out, skirting the easel of a painter by unspoken
agreement.
Winter is a great time to explore this isolated
beach. There’s a small parking lot at the
end of New England Road, which becomes
Higbee’s Beach Road. Wear sturdy shoes —
this is not a barefoot beach. Bring a friend or
two, or your dog — the area can be isolated
and a creepy human is scarier than any ghost.
Lock up your bike if you pedal over. Bring your
Enrich Your Life... Adopt An Animal
Three beautiful dogs from the Cape May County Animal Shelter and Adoption Center... call 609-465-8923
VINNY is a “gentle giant” and loves to be a lap
dog. He is 77 pounds of pure joy who came to
the shelter as a stray. He loves to play in the
baby pool and chase toys in the yard. Vinny
has great leash skills and would be a great
companion in a single-adult home. He is up
to date on all vaccinations and prefers a home
without cats.
ZAYDA is an affectionate and mature girl who
came to the shelter when her owner passed
away. She knows basic behavior cues and
loves to run around the yard. Zayda loves people
and will cuddle with you in any chair. She
is house-trained and would be good in a home
with children. If interested in adopting this
sweet girl, contact the shelter.
LYLA is a seven-year-old girl who came to the
shelter when her family could no longer care
for her. She loves to run around the yard and
chase toys. Lyla also walks well on her leash
and knows many behavior cues that she loves
to show off. Once she is comfortable with you,
she loves attention and would be best in a stable,
all-female household.
Enrich Your Life... Adopt An Animal
Four beautiful cats from the Cape May County Animal Shelter and Adoption Center... call 609-465-8923
CHOOCH was a stray for years, fending for
himself as best he could. He is FIV positive
but can still live a long and healthy life. FIV is
only transmitted through deep, blood-drawing
wounds so he can happily live in a multicat
household without infecting other pets.
Chooch has had a rough time in life and needs
a loving home that will care to his needs.
NERO AND RUBY came to the shelter from
the Buttercup Dune colony in Wildwood
Crest. This bonded pair would be best adopted
together. Ruby looks after Nero like a big sister
and Nero is the sweetest boy you’ll ever meet.
He was the runt of his litter and has become
her shadow. They are both house-trained and
would do well in a home with other cats.
GRAYCIE is an indoor/outdoor cat who enjoys
hunting to her heart’s content. She is a beautiful
feline who likes her space and affection to
not be forced upon her. Graycie is independent
and would do best in a home without other
cats, dogs and children. She is up to date on all
vaccinations, spayed and declawed. If interested
in adopting Graycie, contact the shelter.
