El transcurso inevitable de los años tiene un
contenido tan especial como enigmático que es la
experiencia. Ese factor fundamental del conocimiento de
algo a través de haberlo vivido y que queda allí, guardado
en el atesoramiento del recuerdo. Aunque también y en la
misma medida, nos lleva a vivir la pérdida de aquellos seres
queridos y admirados, algo así como la parte ambigua del
paso por la vida.
Mi propia experiencia, fue haberlo conocido, haber
estado a su lado, haber compartido aquel sueño casi
dislocado de transformar las calles de Miami en algo así como
Mónaco, tener un Grand Prix propio, con acento cubano, el
mismo que trajera impreso en sus retinas de mocoso ingenuo
desde el Malecón habanero y fuera tomando forma como
un castillo en el aire resguardado en las paredes del orfanato
que lo cobijó en suelo americano.
The inevitable passing of the years bestows upon
its recipient something as special as it is enigmatic, which
is the blessing of experience. That fundamental factor of
knowing something through having lived it remains there,
stored in the treasury of memory. To the same extent, it
leads us to live the loss of those loved and admired,
something like the ambiguous part of the passage through
life.
My own experience of having met him, having been
by his side, having shared that almost dislocated dream of
transforming the streets of Miami into something like Monaco,
having his own Grand Prix, with a Cuban accent, the same
one that he had imprinted on his retinas of naive brat from
Havana’s Malecón took shape as a castle in the air
protected behind the walls of the orphanage that sheltered
him on American soil.
