OutdoorEducation Programmes<br />
Continuing are our reports onOutdoor Education activities and, this<br />
week, we look at the Year 11 Historytrip to the West Coast.<br />
Inaugural West Coast Year 11 HistoryField Trip<br />
Over the two days preceding the Easter break, students from two Year 11<br />
History classes travelled to the West Coast inpreparation for aninternal<br />
assessment standard. This assessment deals with significant events and<br />
disasters thathaveoccurredthroughoutNew Zealand’shistory.<br />
Organising teacher Patrick Sandrey said thatthe purpose of this trip wasfor<br />
students to gain insightand historical empathyrelating to events that have<br />
occurredonthe coast.These events included the KowhitirangiIncident, the<br />
Brunner Mine disaster, the Pike River Mine disaster and the 1908 Blackball<br />
Miners’strike.<br />
To better understand the events andWestCoast historywevisited memorials<br />
andmuseumsthroughoutour journey to gain some first-handknowledge.<br />
On our first daywepacked up and headed,via Arthurs Pass,toKowhitirangi,<br />
just outsideHokitika. Herelies amemorialtopolicemen, home guardsmen<br />
and civilians who were killed during Stanley Graham’s reign ofterror in<br />
1941. This site commemorates those who risked their lives to halt askilled<br />
and ruthless killer. After taking photos and discussion wetravelled to the<br />
HokitikaGorge foraleisurely walk beforesetting up at our accommodation<br />
in Greymouth.<br />

The following day we ventured up the Grey Valley to the Pike River Mine<br />
Memorial (pictured below). This was a very poignant and humbling<br />
experience as students viewed the memorials established for the miners<br />
who areyet to be returned to their families.<br />

Festival of the Spoken Word <strong>2021</strong><br />
Festival of the Spoken Word made awelcome return to close out the<br />
end of Term One ofthe College Cultural Calendar, where ithas sat<br />
for over aquarter ofacentury with only 2020 being atroublesome<br />
companion.<br />
As forother years,<strong>2021</strong>saw Festival of the Spoken Word showcase avariety<br />
of acts to make up the programme forthe evening.The evening wasnotable<br />
forthe number of original pieces by students,aswellasthe commendable<br />
number of senior students who performed.<br />

Junior Serious Monologue<br />
Year 9student Maddie Page (pictured right)<br />
took out this category with her original piece<br />
entitled ‘MyWar Poem’, while Year 10 student<br />
Genevieve Felton’s original ‘Red and Pink<br />
Carnations’ earned her second place.<br />
Senior Serious Group Performance<br />
First placed was LauraMihailescu-Bogdan,<br />
ZoeRitchie and Hannah White fortheir extract<br />
fromWilliam Shakespeare’s ‘Twelfth Night’.<br />
Second placed was Hannah O’Reilly,<br />
Penina Vaaelua, Olivia Lill and<br />
Gemma Tapurau with ‘BeaLady’ written by Hannah O’Reilly.<br />
Senior Serious Monologue<br />
Two original pieces took out the honours in this<br />
section with (pictured left) Jorja Roulston’s tonguein-cheek<br />
‘2020, Let’s Chat’ placing her first, and<br />
Lauren Taylor’s ‘No matter the years’ placing her<br />
second.<br />
Senior Humorous Monologue<br />
The above tongue-in-cheek theme continued in<br />
this categorywith TiaMCallum’s Senior Humorous<br />
Monologue winning piece entitled ‘I Love Sports’;<br />
and Imogene Felton placing second with<br />
‘Seagull the Sequel’. Both were original pieces.<br />
Senior Humorous Group<br />
The laughs continued in this final section of the main programme with<br />
Molly McKenna and Kasey Higson taking top honours for their<br />
interpretation of Catherine Tate’s ‘Detention Lauren’.<br />
Second place delivered an entertaining lightsaber fightinthe guise of two<br />
young lads role-playing an adapted ‘Star Wars’ presentation. Forthe record,<br />
Malachi Drye is not Dennis Nguyen’s father!<br />
In thethird-placed group,anotable nod is giventoBenMiddleton’s news<br />
weather presentation (pictured below) as part ofaYear 13 group original<br />
sketch called ‘The News’. Joining Ben inthis group were Parker Bradford,<br />
Samantha Jerao,Harmyn McLean and SamReilly-Sigel.<br />
Appreciation<br />
A special thank you goes to Kylie Backhouse-Smith, Milly Brown,<br />
Jayne Cornelius and CamillaKnights fortheir judging forthe evening.<br />
Thank youalso to FrontofHouseJoanne Wakelin; and to Marg Macpherson<br />
and SarahLassen in their respectiveroles supporting the evening.<br />

AshDance<strong>2021</strong><br />
AshDance <strong>2021</strong> hit the stage on the evening of Thursday 08April,<br />
playing to an enthusiastic audiencewho were impressed by the quality<br />
and varietyofthe dancers.<br />
Organiser Claire Bubb said the programme was rich and varied, beginning<br />
with an energetic performance from theYear 12/13 Danceclass performing<br />
MyShot from the musical Hamilton, and culminating in aguest performance<br />
by AshColl’s Polyfest group,while the judges deliberated.<br />
Also adding to the programme was the Life Dance Academy’s two<br />
performances (Judoand Hall of Fame), MaxNichol and Emma-Paige Dickson<br />
(False Confidence) and Jessalene Eclipse (Skin).<br />
The programmewas ably linked together by our Head Students in their MC<br />
role –MilliSullivan, Thomas Patterson, Easterlin Faamausili and Alex Rielly.<br />
The competition itself washardfoughtand comprised of anumber of dance<br />
genres from hip-hop to lyrical and contemporary.<br />
Results<br />
Judges Kylie Backhouse-Smith and Justine Hanrahan had atough<br />
decision process,but settled on:<br />

Following this we visited Blackball, which is home to the Museum of<br />
Working-Class History. This museum has awealth of primary information<br />
thatstudents can use fortheir upcoming assignment.<br />
Our final stop was the Brunner Mine disaster memorial walk which offers<br />
valuable information about the affect and heartbreak that the mining<br />
disaster had on the Brunnertoncommunity125 years ago.<br />
All-in-all it seemed asuccessful maiden voyage forthe Year 11 HistoryWest<br />
Coast Field Trip.Hopefully the students sharethatsame sentimentand have<br />
an elevatedunderstanding of the West Coast and its history.<br />

House Fest Results<br />
While the judges of the main programme deliberated, the first of the<br />
Inter-House cultural events of the year took to the stage in the House<br />
Fest componentofthe evening.<br />
Blue House opened the House Fest section with ‘TherapyEnglish’.<br />
Tophonours forthe House Fest went to Orange House’s ode to ‘Channel<br />
Surfing’, with Red House’s ‘Six Little Pigs’ coming in second.<br />
Green House also ‘tippedtheir hoods’tothe other Houses with their actof<br />
‘Little Green Riding Hood’.<br />
Concluding the evening was the <strong>2021</strong> Student Executive with their<br />
entertaining piece.<br />
