Protecting our newborns
The national newborn heel prick
screening programme has been
helping thousands of newborn babies
avoid apotential life ofill-health and
suffering.
Thetest,commonly knownasthe ‘heel
prick test’ or‘Guthrie Test’, was first
introduced as anationalprogramme in
New Zealand in 1969, has been used in
New Zealand forjust over 50 years.
It was one of the most successful
screening programmes around the
world and helped identify metabolic
conditions which could be diagnosed
beforeababybecame unwell,allowing
treatment to start immediately,
before life-threatening illness or
developmental delays happened.
Ministry of Health’s deputy directorgeneral
population health and
prevention Deborah Woodley said
each year more than 99 percent of
all babies born inNew Zealand were
screened.
‘‘That’s about 64,000 babies, ofwhich,
on average approximately 50 are
identified as needing treatment,” she
said.
“In 2018, 67 New Zealand-born babies
benefited from metabolic screening.
The impact of this is far-reaching as it
affects the quality of life and future
health of each child diagnosed with a
condition, and also the quality of life of
their family, whanau and their ability
to contributetosocietyovertime.”
“The impact the programme has had
in improving the lives of thousands
of children and their families over
the last 50 years is substantial, and so
importanttoacknowledge,” she said.
The programme has evolved
considerably over time with more
conditions being screened for
and long-term research studies
are improving treatment of those
conditions.
