This is not your usual Guy Ritchie movie.
It is non stop action from the start, but
then getting more and more dark asnew
elements of the storyare introduced.
Jason Statham as the lead has a serious
score tosettle and as it is very personal he
goes all out to get revenge. It’s not for the
fainthearted.
Iwas the only female in the audience. Iasked
someofthe guys to rate it and they all said 4
and ahalf stars ...and greataction!
Youwill know Jasonfromhis roles in the Fast
and Furiousmovies.Alwaysdriving beautiful
fast cars in crazysituations.
In the end, it’s asuspenseful heist movie
involving betrayal, family tragedy and a
huge, long, merciless gunfight inthe final
act.
Fun offroading action foragood
cause will see thrillseekers take to
the Ashburton riverbed this Sunday
in the inaugural Ashburton CanAm
river run.
The event,organised by Ashburton
CanAm, is on the Wheels Week
programme andwillboost the coffers
of St John Ashburton.
Manager James Bradford said it
had attracted abit of interest and
wouldtake in sectionsofthe
Ashburton River terrain. It was open
to anybody in an offroad vehiclesuch
as autility terrainvehicle (or sidebyside),quad
bike or fourwheel
drive vehicle. It costs $40 per
vehicle.
“I’mhopingfor agood turnout to
supportStJohnand have abit of
fun,” he said.
The event,which coincided with
Mother’s Day, wouldhead in convoy
up thesouth branch of theAshburton
River, starting from Melrose Road
river access. It would return via the
north branch.
It would take in atrail of the
into glass
Glass artist Dominic Burrell’s firstsolo
exhibition in Ashburtonshowcases his
fascination with colour,form and pattern.
The exhibition is the firstofits kindat
Ashburton ArtGallery and openedon
Wednesday.
It features 24 artworks, all intricately made
by the artist, whohas been working withglass
for 18 years.
Someofthe worksfeature glass stacksfused
together, anotheratall, tiered candlestick.
Burrell said his works exploredlandforms,
isobaricweathermaps and shifts in
perception.
His other interest of meteorology influenced
his ideas andworks.
Working with glass followed awelldefined
process that started with the raw material of
silica sand,limestoneand sodium carbonate.
The raw material came in different
consistencies and colours.
Glass was heated up to 1160 degreescelsius
and ablowing iron usedtocreate abubble.
Burrell, who lives in Whanganui, said he
enjoyed the cold working process of glass
sculpture.
Works typically took him three to seven days
to complete and multiple pieceswereworked
on at the sametime.
riverbed butalso asmallsection on
the road betweenMtSomersand the
river branches so vehicles neededto
be roadworthy too, James said.
He had carried out a
reconnaissance trip in the past few
weeks with an experienced river
userand planned to have an
experienced offroader guidingon
the day.
James is aregular offroaderwho
has beenabletomix business and
pleasurewithhis role at CanAm. He
is amember of the South IslandUTV
Club and will be driving aMaverick
X3, XRS; a2021 modelcapable of
travelling 150km/h, which is also
registeredandwarranted for road
use.
While the timing of the event best
fit the Wheels Week programme, but
maybenot some peoplebecauseof
Mother’s Day,heencouraged people
to bring their mums along for an
outingwith adifference. Theconvoy,
which leaves Melrose Roadat
10.30am, would arrive in Mt Somers
in time for lunch before heading
back down the river.
People could bring their own
picnic or head into the Mt Somers
Tavernand purchase lunch.
James said St John offeredagreat
servicetopeoplefrom all walks of
life anditwas still, surprisingly, not
government funded.
He had called them on anumber of
times in the past and was keento
support them. The most memorable
emergencycall was for an offroading
accident north of Kaikoura involving
his younger brother,who eventually
had to be airlifted out of the remote
area.
James said he was truly gratefulto
medical help on hand that day.
