Childrenlearn and create
environmentally safefood storage
alternative at Public Library
Arecent holiday programme session at
Ashburton Public Library had children
learningabout an environmentallysafe
alternative to plastic food wrap, while
also creating their own beeswax food
wraps.
The fantastic turnout of children enjoyed
choosing their own fabrics and dusting
them with beeswax, pine resin, and
coconut oil before having the mixture of
ingredients melted into the fabric. This
concoction is food safeand allows food to
be wrapped and stored in lunchboxesorin
afridge and is an excellent alternative to
using plastic food wrap.
The beeswax food wraps lastformonthsof
repeated use and onlyrequiregentle hand
washing to keep clean. While the waxcan
get flaky,alittlecoconut oil and remelting
the wax inthe wrap under aniron can
revitalise the wrap forextended use.
Drivers will be pleased to learn
that Council’s roading contractors,
have recently completed major
reconstruction works of ruralroads near
Hinds,Methven and Fairton.
HEB Construction worked to repair 800
metres of poor ground conditions on
Isleworth Road near Hinds, with more
than half of the stretch of road needing
to be dug out and replaced. The newly
laid fabric and geotextile base will help
strengthen the road and ensure longevity.
Ashburton District Councillor, Stuart
Wilsonwas on-siteinspecting the finished
road and wasquitepleased with results.
"This road has been on our radar forsome
time and I’m gladtosee it has now been
completed.”
“The potholes are gone; the pavement
failures have been fixed; this road now
provides asafer,smootherroadand route
forpeopletotravel on,”hesaid.
On the other end of the district, Fulton
Hogan have rehabilitated a2.1 kilometre
sectionofPuddingHillRoadnearMethven,
connecting two previously completed
projects for atotal of4.9 kilometres of
Meanwhile, Fairfield Road – the main
throughway from State Highway 1and
Talley’s –has seen upgrade investments
overthepastfouryearsduetoheavytraffic
stretch has also been completed, that
repaired damage and poor conditions of
the road. Minor works, including works
to the shouldersand the access ways are
expected tobecompleted inthe next
couple weeks as well.
Road improvement projects are part of
the Council’s planned Road and Footpath
Programme.
The Council's website News &
Information page has received an
impressive makeover that presents
stories, features, advisories, project
updates, road closures, and more-all in
one beautifully designed page.
Designed tolook like anews page you'd
expect from popular news sites, the new
format allows current and relevant news
to remain easily accessible for alonger
period than the previous layout.Features
are also categorised by topics, so visitors
canfind all related news items organised
in one placebased on interest.
Prior to the enhancements, news items
would simply be listed in one long blogroll
which resulted in stories quickly
disappearing from the first page view; this
is no longer the case.
The newlayout provides agreat overview
of whatCouncil is currently working on, or
the topics that are of significant interest
to residents ofthe district. New sharing
buttons,available on each individual news
storypage, also makes it easy forreaders
to share the content on popular social
media platforms.
Council currently posts around 31 news
stories* per month so there's plenty to
catchuponfor those interested in learning
more about the business of Council,
events, and activities.
