gave students in Year 9and above<br />

from <strong>Ashburton</strong> College,<br />

<strong>Ashburton</strong>ChristianSchool and<br />

Mt HuttCollege, arange of<br />

informationabout future career<br />

choices.<br />

It was also opentothe publicin<br />

the afternoon and includedguest<br />

speaker, clinical psychologist and<br />

author NigelLatta speaking about<br />

parenting teens in <strong>2021</strong>atan<br />

eveningsession.<br />

Businesseswere varied and<br />

includedSynlait, EA Networks,<br />

Rainer, VetLifeand South Pacific<br />

Seeds; trainingorganisations such<br />

as Ara, AgriTraining, <strong>Ashburton</strong><br />

Learning Centre and Aviation<br />

Academy of NewZealand;aswell<br />

as healthcareproviders such as<br />

Canterbury District Health Board<br />

and St Johnand ahost of other<br />

organisations with voluntary and<br />

paid career opportunities.<br />

There wasquite abit of interest<br />

around the sites especiallyfor<br />

thosedrawingstudents in with<br />

virtualrealityheadsets and<br />

hands­on games and activities.<br />

Amongthem was atruckdriving<br />

simulator set up by Quigley<br />

Contracting, withhelp from<br />

Adrenaline Events. They had an<br />

18­wheeler Kenworth truck<br />

computer gaming simulator set up<br />

for students to drive, in manual or<br />

automatic mode, while towing a<br />

harvester.<br />

Quigley’s operations manager<br />

Rob Raisbeck saidthey were keen<br />

to hear from anyone with<br />

experience or looking to learn.<br />

As longaspeople had preferably<br />

afulldriver’s licence, they could<br />

be helped to gain their truck<br />

licenceorwithavenues forpretrade<br />

or mechanical<br />

apprenticeships dealing with all<br />

typesofcontracting machinery.<br />

Aviation AcademyofNew<br />

Zealand’s Nicky Hodges said that<br />

despite the currentdownturn in<br />

international travel, there was<br />

already an international need for<br />

pilots for the future of the<br />

industry. It was aperfect timefor<br />

students thinking aboutaflying<br />

career to consider it as acareer<br />

path.<br />
