showcases an eclectic and<br />

calmingassortment of artfrom<br />

The Associates, 15 artists who<br />

live in andaround wider<br />

Christchurch.<br />

Called AStone to Strikeand A<br />

Rock to Stumble Over,the<br />

exhibition runs until June18.<br />

Exhibition contributor Viv<br />

Kepes said artists had been<br />

coming togetherover the last<br />

five or so years andthis was<br />

their second exhibition.<br />

She had contributed three<br />

large oil on canvas pieces that<br />

had beeninspiredbyan<br />

endemic dwarfbroom plant rediscovered<br />

at Banks Peninsula.<br />

She paintedfrom macro<br />

photographs taken of the broom.<br />

Ms Kepes said The Associates<br />

were asupport network for a<br />

community of artists.<br />

Somewere formallytrained at<br />

art school,others selftaught,<br />

and they rangedinaged from<br />

someintheir 20’s through to<br />

othersintheir mid 70s.<br />

‘‘We have astrong<br />

international flavour andthe<br />

work we do is all quite<br />

different.’’<br />

Works featured in the<br />

exhibition include acluster<br />

series of acrylic on aluminium<br />

pieces from Susanne van<br />

Tuinen, whichfromadistance<br />

seem rectangular in form but<br />

close up are more triangular in<br />

shape.<br />

Another piece by Janneth Gil<br />

features apoemengraved on<br />

matai wood andmuslinand<br />

stainedwith flower ink.<br />

Other exhibits include<br />

ceramics from Sarah Harper, a<br />

twisted and wovenflax work by<br />

Mikyung Jang, works by<br />

printmaker GabyReade<br />

reflecting her fascination with<br />

plantsand animals, watercolour<br />

and pencil works from Sarah<br />

Andersonand paintings from<br />

Dutch born Akkyvan der Velde<br />

which document large scale<br />

dairy farming.<br />

to StumbleOverhas been<br />

curated by DrWarren Feeney<br />

and someofthe artists will<br />

attend atalk at thegallery at<br />

2pm on <strong>May</strong> 16.<br />
