Students’ baton run<br />

Present­day <strong>Ashburton</strong> College students have<br />

been called on today to take partinasymbolic<br />

baton runahead of this weekend’s reunion for<br />

students who went to the college in the<br />

decade after it opened in 1965.<br />

Twenty­four juniorstudents will simulate a<br />

baton run held exactly 50 years ago.<br />

<strong>Ashburton</strong> High Schooland the Hakatere<br />

Technical College combinedtobecome<br />

<strong>Ashburton</strong> College andabatonrelay run was<br />

held in 1965, starting at the technical college<br />

and ending at the newWalnut Avenue<br />

campus.<br />

WilliamCarnell, 11, is looking forward to competing in the national TT age group championships at Leeston in October.<br />

racing.<br />

The11­year­old speedster is a<br />

member of the <strong>Ashburton</strong>Motorcycle<br />

Club andthe Canterbury Mini<br />

MotorcrossClub.<br />

In every race he is competitive and<br />

focused, using the start timeto plan<br />

his race and which linehe will take to<br />

win.<br />

He has three yearsof racing under<br />

his belt ­one of which was nonexistent<br />

due to covid restrictions ­<br />

and already afew trophies to his<br />

credit.<br />

The latestwin was at the <strong>Ashburton</strong><br />

MotorcycleClub’s Wheels Week TT<br />

racing, atRakaia Barrhill Methven<br />

Roadlast Sunday.<br />

It was afive­race event.<br />

There is alsoasecond place from<br />

the King of theBowl five­race series<br />

held in Darfield earlier this year.<br />

He ridesaSuzuki DRZ125, fourstroke<br />

trail bike,infull protective<br />

gear, andhas justcompleted his final<br />

Wheels Week TT racingevent in the 7<br />

­11trail class; he turns12inmid­<br />

October and will face new challenges<br />

with racing in the next agegroup.<br />

He is looking forward to it, but until<br />

then he has the Canterbury<br />

Championships in early Augustand<br />

has already qualified for the national<br />

championships in Leeston in early<br />

October, by winning six qualifying<br />

races during the season.<br />

He likes the thrill of ridingand<br />

competing against others andis<br />

always seeking ways to learn more<br />

skills to helphis racing.<br />

William wasintroducedto<br />

motorcross by afriend in 2018 and is<br />

now racing most weekends.<br />

With mostof2020 wiped out by<br />

covid restrictions, this season has<br />

been William’s firstreal competitive<br />

year.<br />

He has the coaching supportofdad,<br />

Duncan, who alsohelps withbike<br />

maintenance and travel<br />

arrangements.<br />

The father and son duostart most<br />

race days withbacon buttie<br />

sandwiches ­and later enjoy pot<br />

noodles for lunch.<br />

William is still learning about bike<br />

maintenance but he does have<br />

cleaning responsibilities and can<br />

change atyre when needed.<br />

The TT racing events, mostly run as<br />

aseries of races, has seen William<br />

compete aroundCanterbury, buthe<br />

hasbeenasfar south as Southland<br />

(competing on sand)and will head to<br />

the King of CentralMotorCross,<br />

hosted by Central Otago Motorcycle<br />

ClubinCromwell this weekend.<br />
