Twentyfour juniorstudents will simulate a baton run held exactly 50 years ago. Ashburton High Schooland the Hakatere Technical College combinedtobecome Ashburton College andabatonrelay run was held in 1965, starting at the technical college and ending at the newWalnut Avenue campus. The11yearold speedster is a member of the AshburtonMotorcycle Club andthe Canterbury Mini MotorcrossClub. In every race he is competitive and focused, using the start timeto plan his race and which linehe will take to win. He has three yearsof racing under his belt one of which was nonexistent due to covid restrictions and already afew trophies to his credit. The latestwin was at the Ashburton MotorcycleClub’s Wheels Week TT racing, atRakaia Barrhill Methven Roadlast Sunday. It was afiverace event. There is alsoasecond place from the King of theBowl fiverace series held in Darfield earlier this year. He ridesaSuzuki DRZ125, fourstroke trail bike,infull protective gear, andhas justcompleted his final Wheels Week TT racingevent in the 7 11trail class; he turns12inmid October and will face new challenges with racing in the next agegroup. He is looking forward to it, but until then he has the Canterbury Championships in early Augustand has already qualified for the national championships in Leeston in early October, by winning six qualifying races during the season. He likes the thrill of ridingand competing against others andis always seeking ways to learn more skills to helphis racing. William wasintroducedto motorcross by afriend in 2018 and is now racing most weekends. With mostof2020 wiped out by covid restrictions, this season has been William’s firstreal competitive year. He has the coaching supportofdad, Duncan, who alsohelps withbike maintenance and travel arrangements. The father and son duostart most race days withbacon buttie sandwiches and later enjoy pot noodles for lunch. William is still learning about bike maintenance but he does have cleaning responsibilities and can change atyre when needed. The TT racing events, mostly run as aseries of races, has seen William compete aroundCanterbury, buthe hasbeenasfar south as Southland (competing on sand)and will head to the King of CentralMotorCross, hosted by Central Otago Motorcycle ClubinCromwell this weekend. NEWS Ashburton Courier, May 6, 2021 Variety of feedback received on plan The future direction for council and the projects it will undertake over the next 10 years naturally impact you, the people we serve, and last month it was pleasing to see so many residents have their say on what those plans should be. Through our sixweek consultation process on our draft LongTerm Plan, council heard from people all across the district on matters ranging from water, roading and bridges, economic development, housing and waste recovery, right through to community halls and green spaces. In fact, Ican report that when consultation closed on April 19, we’d received 430 submissions from individuals, groups and organisations. Of those, 70 have indicated that they wish to speak to their submission at ahearing which is scheduled for May 11. Although the feedback we received touched on avariety of topics, three issues seemed to be top of mind for many submitters. The first topic that draw a great deal of feedback was water meters and the proposal to install them on every ordinary residential property connected to acouncil water supply in order to detect leaks. Across these submissions, there has been both support and opposition, with some people even suggesting other ideas for detecting leaks. Residents were also asked if they agreed with aproposed plan to make our Elderly Persons Housing units selfsustaining, and this too generated agreat deal of feedback. 9 While many people were in agreement of council being able fund required upgrades and maintenance to the homes, there was amixture of responses as to how long it should take for the homes to become selfsustaining to support these refurbishments. Although we had emphasised water meters and Elderly Persons Housing in the consultation, anumber of residents also expressed further interest in the second Ashburton urban bridge, particularly around its location, and this was another big theme we have found across the submissions. No matter whether the feedback was in support of or against particular issues, all feedback is hugely beneficial to council. Consultation allows us to better understand the breadth of perspectives held across the district, and it can also provide greater insights to help inform decisions. Thank you to everyone who took the time to give their feedback on our draft 10year plan. Once hearings are carried out, council will deliberate on the submissions before forming their final decisions for the plan, ready for it to be adopted at the end of June. Volunteers will meet at the AshburtonCourthouse at 9am, arrive at the Mt SomersDomain at 9.30am andaim to be at the Hakatere Heron Road car park at Lake Heron for ateam talk and safety briefing at 10.15am. Those lending ahandare asked to bring loppers, small saws and gloves, as wellasfood and drinks to get themthrough the day.Other tools will be available to use.
