Spring Cleaning Jewelry By: Sandi Davis / Fashion “Cents” Spring is always about spring cleaning, right? I am making the decision to spring clean and get rid of questionable fashion choices, including jewelry. I grew up in Kentucky and Ohio, and once the threat of snow was gone, we started the purge. Move the heavy stuff to the back of the closet and drawers, put up the screens and clean everything. I started here with the shift of clothing between two closets. It is cathartic, and I find myself getting rid of old worn-out things. Or things that are no longer “fashionable.” Truthfully, these were the clothes that I pull out and say, “WHAT was I thinking!” or “I CANNOT wear this color!” or “Where would I EVER wear this?” Fortunately, I have a good friend who really loves my gentle cast offs, and no matter what I throw at her, she looks good in it! And Cat is braver than I am. Since the pandemic, I am wearing less jewelry. Now some of this is because once I put in hearing aids, prop on my glasses and then the mask, there is no “ear room” for earrings. Plus, I am afraid that when I take the mask off that I will lose another earring. It happens. I have now started spring cleaning my jewelry. Most of my earrings are considered costume jewelry. The definition of costume jewelry is “jewelry made with inexpensive materials or imitation gems.” Sounds depressing. I have an abundance of those little plastic pill bags and am using them for the largess of costume jewelry I am getting rid of. My plan is to get to the point where my favorite or better-quality earrings necklaces and bracelets have their own spot in my jewelry box. That way, I can see it all and make better jewelry choices on which pieces to wear. But what should I do with the jewelry I no longer need, along with those wonderful hanging bags for jewelry? She’s shattering the glass ceiling as successor to Marty Baron, who came to the Post from the Boston Globe, where he oversaw the investigation that broke the silence on child molestation by priests. Busbee now joins my list of journalistic heroes and heroines. Baron is on it. Jane Mayer, a long-ago colleague of mine in a Vermont newsroom, is way up there. Seymour Hersh. Departed icons Anthony Lukas, I.F. Stone, Ida Tarbell, Ida B. Wells. Another is Victor Navasky, longtime editor and publisher emeritus of The Nation magazine, and author of the book Naming Names, about the McCarthy period. I met Navasky years ago when we invited him to my university in Iowa as a distinguished lecturer. As I was seeking prepublication “blurbs” for my forthcoming book, about the life and times of my goofy Greatest Generation social activist photojournalist father, I thought of Navasky. He agreed to look over the manuscript but it had to be a hard copy. During the pandemic, he and his wife had decamped from New York City to upstate New York. A friend hand-delivered a printout. Here’s what Victor wrote, bless his heart: “Do yourself a favor and read the highly original All Available Light, which is really three books in one, each of which deepens one’s understanding of the others: A loving daughter’s memoir of her late father; a Cold War account of the courage it took not to name names during the McCarthyite years (which he didn’t); and an erudite but easily accessible account of how a caring photographer goes about making the images that are still very much still with us.” McFarland Press originally scheduled publication for this Fall but now is looking at early summer.
