Right now, that item is a semiconductor that’s required to build microchips, and it’s causing chaos in the automotive world. As vehicles become more technologically advanced, manufacturers rely heavily on semiconductors to power everything from navigation systems to seatbelt sensors. Semiconductors are a core building block in electronics to act as a bridge between components. For car manufacturers, if there’s a shortage, production has to be slowed or halted until more can be produced. With the combination of COVID shutdowns and demand up for vehicles, reduced microchip production has created a global shortage that affects nearly every single automotive manufacturer. What does this mean for you? If you’re waiting for your new car to be built, it’s going to take a bit longer, which can be frustrating, especially July 2021 into to make them more appealing. Never, never describe anything as old, old-fashioned and/or outdated. They’re rare, precious, antiques, collectors’ items, vintage objects, or… treasured heirlooms. Currently, the U.S. can only produce around 10% of the world’s supply of semiconductors, which means a dependency on foreign companies to supply these critical parts. It also means that, since new-car inventory is seriously low, dealers are turning to pre-owned vehicles to make money. If you’ve been solicited non-stop by your dealer asking if you want to sell your car, now you know why. What we’re seeing is that owners are selling or trading in their used cars and making almost what they paid for them and, in some cases, more. Selling your used vehicle may seem like a good idea right now, but remember, you still need another vehicle. A handful of manufacturers have announced they will start building semiconductors at new plants in the U.S., but that’s going to take some time.
