Physical sciences FORCED TO MOVE Lesson 4 Teacher notes Science inquiry focus: Does the size and/or mass of an object change how much force is needed to move it? Technology/Engineering/Mathematics links: • participating in online interactive games and activities • using informal measurements to mark a controlled distance and height that each object will be moved to, and comparing the masses of each object • using mathematical language to informally compare the amount of force needed to move objects of different masses Background information • A force is a push or pull that is applied by a person, another object or an invisible force, such as gravity, to change a stationary or moving object’s position, direction, shape or size. • The amount of force required to move an object depends on the mass of the object, not it’s size. For example: An expanded balloon, which is larger but lighter than a marble, will need less force to move it than a marble will. During the investigation, students should compare the mass of the full bucket to the mass of the full tissue box to see why the bucket needs more force than the tissue box. • Increasing the amount of force applied to an object can be achieved by using more muscle power from an individual, more people or simple machines, such as pulleys. • When completing the investigation, the amount of force that each group uses to move an object will be subjective, as it will depend on the strength of the inviduals that tested it. At this age, it is sufficicient for students to know that a small amount of force will make less change to an object than a large amount of force. Assessment focus: • Use page 127 to assess the student’s science inquiry skills, including predicting and recording results. • Use page 128 to assess the student’s understanding of forces and how different amounts of force need to be applied to objects of different size and weight.
