Science Inquiry Skills: • Questioning and predicting QP • Planning and conducting PC • Processing and analysing data and information PA • Evaluating E • Communicating C Science as a Human Endeavour: • Students act like scientists when they make observations, ask questions and describe the growth of a plant. • Students explore how science is used in caring for plants and providing adequate sun, soil, water and air for it to grow and change to an adult plant. Technology/Engineering/Mathematics links: • participating in an interactive website activity • using a QR code reader on a computer tablet to watch a video • using the iMovie® or PowerPoint application to take photographs and create a stop-motion video Background information • The life cycle of a plant begins with a seed. Usually seeds fall to the ground. If the conditions are right, the seed will germinate (begin to grow or develop). The roots grow first to seek water and nutrients to aid growth. Then the stem emerges, pushing up to the sunlight. Finally the branches and leaves develop. The small plant is now called a seedling. The plant grows taller and the stem gets thicker. The plant now looks like its parent plant. A mature plant produces flowers which are fertilised by bees or the wind, and produces seeds in a fruit or seed pod. The seeds are distributed by the wind or animals, or simply drop to the ground. The parent plant eventually dies, but the life cycle continues. Assessment focus: • Use page 13 as a formative assessment of the student’s understanding that plants grow and change from a seed to an adult plant with flowers and fruit.
