Salome
with 3SIXTY BIOMEDICINE
Understanding PCOS with Salome
An estimated 8 to 13 per cent of women suffer from Polycystic Ovary Syndrome
(PCOS), a hormonal disorder that involves reproductive and metabolic problems.
The long-term effects of this condition can lead to infertility due to ovarian
dysfunction, but sufferers can also develop diabetes, cardiac problems linked to
hypertension and high cholesterol, as well as sleeping problems.
Common symptoms and diagnosis
Symptoms include irregular or prolonged menstrual cycles and elevated levels
of the male hormone androgen, which results in excess body hair and acne, and
polycystic ovaries where the ovaries are not able to function properly.
Getting a diagnosis by a health practitioner is key to effectively managing
PCOS. The onset of PCOS can start from as young as 14 or 15 years old and if left
undiagnosed and untreated for years – will cause further health complications
down the line, including possible infertility. Parents are encouraged to talk to
their daughters about what is considered ‘normal’ and ‘abnormal’ periods. Just by
having these conversations, we can normalise these common women’s health
conditions and debunk myths and the unfortunate stigma attached to it.
What is Salome ...
and how can it help with PCOS?
The Salome range was developed
by local pharmaceutical company,
3Sixty Biomedicine, and is based
on consumer insights that South
Africans are wanting more natural
alternatives to treat common female
health conditions. Salome Polycos
assists with the management of
symptoms commonly associated
with PCOS by helping to decrease
testosterone levels as well as blood
pressure levels. It also plays a role in
increasing insulin activity in women
diagnosed with PCOS, as many suffer
from insulin resistance. Due to these
hormonal imbalances women living
with PCOS often battle with acne,
irregular periods, male pattern hair
loss or experience excessive body hair
growth (hirsutism). Salome Polycos’s
main active ingredient is D-chiroinositol
(DCI) which is a natural extract
obtained from the carob tree. In cases
where infertility can be linked back
to the hormonal imbalances caused
by PCOS, patients who make use of
products like Salome Fertility that
contain Myo-inositol and D-Chiroinositol
have seen an increase in
their ovulation, a reduction in their
hyperandrogenism and in the
oxidative stress in their follicular fluid.
The efficacy of the product lies in it
containing the correct ratio of Myoinositol
and D-Chiro-inositol that
have been extracted from the pod of
the Carob bean tree. Clinical studies
have shown that these natural
extracts are instrumental in helping
manage the regulation of ovarian
function in PCOS patients.
Who can use this?
Due to the herbal extracts and use of
natural ingredients in the products,
the Salome range has minimal side
effects and they are recognised and
can be reimbursed by certain medical
aids. The products are available online
at www.3Sixtybiomedicine.co.za or on
Takealot.com, and can be purchased
over the counter at leading
pharmacies nationwide.
We believe #YourJourneyMatters so follow the Salome range on their social media pages to hear from Salome experts who are committed to
educating and normalising conversations about common women’s health conditions. Enter the Get It online competition this month to stand a
chance to win an exclusive custom designed Lou Harvey cosmetic bag and discounted voucher to purchase Salome products.
Book club
Kindness, and strength, and grief. And good company.
Journey’s End Vineyards have released the
latest vintages of their new-look Tales Series;
a range of four wines, each with eye-catching
modern designs to show the inspiration
behind the labels. This month we’re opening
a bottle of Journey’s End Pastor’s Blend
Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot Cabernet Franc
2019, which pays homage to the Pastors
from the local village of Sir Lowry’s Pass who
regularly deliver Sunday sermons at the foot
of the Journey’s End vineyard. It is through
these local pastors that Journey’s End
channels resources for their support and
development programmes to uplift a
community traditionally plagued by
low socio-economic conditions. Their
support includes running soup kitchens
and pensioners’ lunches, building a new
school hall, providing music lessons,
funding a crèche and a campaign to
eradicate bullying in the township
schools. The wine, a blend of 44 per cent
Cabernet Sauvignon, 29 per cent Merlot,
and 27 per cent Cabernet Franc, has rich
notes of juicy dark red fruit including
plums, cherries and blackberries with a
savoury spice dusting from the oak and
some dried herbs giving it versatility for
a range of food dishes. Since we’re not
waiting to open it, luckily this wine is
made for earlier drinking rather than long
cellaring. On winemaker Mike Dawson’s
recommendation, we’ll enjoy it with
lamb shanks, but it’s also excellent with
roast beef or venison. Around R117 from
When the big things feel out
of control ... focus on what
you love right under your nose
There are very few
of us who don’t
know, and love,
Charlie Mackesy’s
sketches and
reminders of
what truly matters
in life. Life seen
through the
adventures of four
best friends - The
Boy, The Mole,
The Fox and
The Horse. The
four are, Charlie
says, all a little
different, and he
can see himself
in all of them,
and suggests we may see them in ourselves, too. The boy,
lonely. The mole wise, and greedy for cake (aren’t we all).
The fox is the quietest ... silent and wary because he’s been
hurt by life. And the horse ... massive, but the most gentle.
Charlie posts his lovely sketches and heart-warming,
thoughtful sayings on Instagram most days, but we like
to keep a copy of the book close by, to dip into when we
need to be brave. ‘What do you want to be when you grow
up?’ ‘Kind’, said the boy.’ Penguin. Penguin, from Exclusive Books.
There are those who swear by selfhelp
books, and those who scoff. But
whichever camp you fall into, you’ll
more than likely feel The Grief
Handbook is a really helpful option
should you need it (and we
hope you don’t). It was written
by South African writer and
content strategist Bridget
McNulty after her mum died
suddenly, and she found she
had no idea how to handle
the grief ... and nor could she
find help in book form. ‘All the
books I could find on grief were
either too dense and philosophical, or
too religious. What I wanted was an honest
exploration of how to deal with the worst thing. I wanted short,
succinct explanations of what grief is and how to survive it,
some space to be really angry and really sad and channel that
in some way, and some words of hope and inspiration to get
me through the darkest days. I wanted a handbook: literally a
hand to lead me through my grief.’ She couldn’t find one. So
she wrote one. Subtitled A guide through the worst days of
your life, she shares her thoughts on the shock and disbelief
and gives hints and advice on how to get through it, on the
fog of grief, and the surprising physicality of it, on firsts, and
lasts, and what others can do to help (drop off dinner, look
after the children for an hour, sit and don’t talk ... don’t say ‘let
me know if you need something’ and never say ‘at least ... ‘.)
There are pages for notes and scribbles, recipes for rituals, and
plenty of kindness. As the blurb says, The Grief Handbook will
take you by the hand and offer empathy and compassion,
helping you through what can feel like the worst days of your
life. One day at a time. Available on Takealot - R10 goes to HPCA
(Hospice), and in bookstores. Details: bridgetmcnulty.com or
There’s life beyond cow’s milk
Are you looking beyond cow’s milk for health reasons
or dietary preferences, or do you simply want to
experiment with non-dairy alternatives? The good
news is that there are many options available out
there. Oat milk is a popular choice because it’s
naturally sweet. It also contains soluble fibre, which
makes it creamier. Almond milk also has many
followers, although many brands contain
added sugar. You could make your own
almond milk by soaking almonds
in water and then blending and
straining away the solids. Coconut
milk is also favoured by many. It has
a pleasant flavour, and it’s a good
non-dairy milk alternative that’s
safe if you have a tree nut allergy.
tofu experience, marinate it, dust it in flour and fry in chunks, then
Although Zandile Masia wears the Teen Universe South Africa 2021 crown
with pride, for her, choosing between being pretty or being smart was
never an option. ‘Surely I can be both,’ she insists. Here she speaks to Get It
– before winging off to the Teen Universe pageant…
andile’s recipe for success is
simple… a close-knit,
supportive family, which
consists of her mother and
stepfather, a twin brother, and a
younger sister. She describes her
‘momager’ as ‘sweet, caring, the anchor
of our house, and the driving force of
our family. She’s also
my number one fan’,
while her stepfather ‘is
our cornerstone, very
flexible and jolly. He
has learned to become
a pageant dad over
the years and enjoys it.’
Zandile also speaks about
her biological father, with whom she has a close relationship. “He has
always been supportive of me, and will always be.’
Zandile’s modeling career began five years ago when she enrolled
at Ace Models in Bloemfontein. ‘I went to Ace Models knowing that
I wanted to be a model, but not knowing that it wasn’t easy.’ She
recounts how she did not win her first pageant in 2016. ‘It’s not easy to
handle a loss when you thought you were the best in the competition.
I went back to the drawing board and realised that with pageantry you
don’t win or lose, you either win or learn. From that day onward, I never
lost a pageant. I entered and won all the local and national pageants I
entered.’
In May 2020, she won the big one – the Teen Universe South Africa
2021 crown. Teen Universe South Africa is the preliminary round for
the international Teen Universe. ‘I’ll be representing South Africa at the
tenth anniversary of Teen Universe this month. After being crowned
as Teen Universe South Africa, I knew that the international stage was
calling my name. The Teen Universe title will mean a lot for my country
and me. The moment I walk on that international stage I won’t be
known as Zandile Masia, but as South Africa – it gives me great joy to
know that I’ll be wearing South Africa on my chest.’
Apart from her modelling and pageantry work, Zandile is studying
Brand and Marketing Management at Vega School in Cape Town. ‘The
most important thing for me in life is to have financial security and
independency, and to live a life I won’t need a break from. I want to be
able to provide for myself and for my family.’
Zandile is also a firm believer in bringing hope to other people. ‘I run a
getitmagazine.co.za/bloemfontein
project where I collect second-hand
clothes from friends and family and
donate them to the needy. I’ve clothed
2900 people in secondhand clothes
this year.’
Although she makes it sound easy to
juggle her diverse roles, she says that
the most challenging part of her daily
life is ‘to keep up with the expectations
of others, as they sometimes forget
that I’m also human. Plus, I have
no privacy.’ On the other hand,
she relishes meeting new people,
engaging with inspirational women,
and building healthy relationships.
When asked about what she would
like to see more of in the beauty
industry, she answers ‘diversity’. ‘We
should have a body that monitors the
proper representation of communities
who lack representation in the media.
All those who are forgotten and not
catered for should be acknowledged
and be given a chance to showcase
their talents.’ Zandile would also like
to see models and aspiring beauty
queens being empowered on how to
handle different situations, including
how to handle winning or losing a
beauty pageant.
With so many hours of her week spent
working, who is Zandile when she is at
home and away from the scrutiny of
being picture perfect? ‘When I’m not
a beauty queen, I’m just a normal girl.
I spend most of my time indoors. I’m
also a clothing designer, so I spend a
lot of time behind my sewing machine.
I love spending time with family. I don’t
have many friends and I spend most of
the time with my mom. She’s my best
friend and my partner in crime when it
comes to shopping.’
enkelgebruik-plastiek en -verpakking, maar jy kan ook soveel of so min as wat jy wil
koop.
Osem het begin as… deel van CoffeeTalks. By CoffeeTalks het ons verskeie eco
ethics aanvaar as deel van ons leefstylfilosofie, waarvan een ‘regverdige handel en
zero waste’ is.
‘sterkte’ is.
BLOEMFONTEIN SE
BINNENSHUISEPLANT-
GHOEROE
Ek het my grootmenslewe… op ’n plaas teen die Vaalrivier as ’n boervrou
deurgebring. Ná my man se dood het ek en my dogters Bloemfontein toe getrek.
Bluebell is… my happy place. Ek’t my winkel begin omdat ek gevoel het ek is op
’n plek in my lewe waar ek nou aan myself kan werk en dink. Oorspronklik was
sommige meer as ander. Om ’n plant
te versorg en te sien groei is goed vir
’n mens se gemoed. Groen is ook die
kleur van groei en lewe... plante is ’n
bewys daarvan.
As jy ’n vertrek wil ophelder en
opvrolik… maak gebruik van plante.
Die onderbewussyn absorbeer die
energie wat plante afgee, so dit maak
happy hormones!
My belangstelling in plante het
ontstaan toe… ons op die plaas gebly
het. Elke plaashuis het mos maar ’n
groot tuin. Hier in Bloemfontein het ek
nie ’n groot tuin nie, dus het my liefde
vir binnenshuise plante gegroei.
My toekomsplanne sluit in… om my
eie reeks potplanthouers te maak –
dit sluit in leer-, lap- en tou-houers.
Persoonlik wil ek ’n goeie nalatenskap
vir my dogters los; nie finansieel nie
maar as ’n ma, mens en vrou.
Die belangrikste lesse wat die lewe
my tot dusver geleer het, is… bly altyd
nederig, moet nooit gaan lê nie en
vertrou op God.
Tydens ’n lui naweekdrentel
by Reizis Square, vang ’n
klein winkeltjie propvol
van die mooiste huisplante
dadelik die oog. Binne is dit
’n groen oase van plante
wat pronk in kleurvolle of
ongewone houers. Die vrou
agter die winkel met die
parmantige naam – Bluebell
– is Anin Smit. Hier
praat sy oor haar liefde vir
plante en gee raad oor hoe
om huisplante aan die lewe
te hou…
Anin se topwenke om jou
binnenshuise plante gesond te hou:
- Moenie huisplante oorwater nie
– een keer per week is gewoonlik
genoeg. Onthou ook om die grond
net klam te hou – kurkdroog of
sopnat veroorsaak probleme.
Gelukkig wys meeste plante as
hulle dors is – dikwels sal hulle blare
hang.
- Die meeste binnenshuise plante
soek nie direkte son nie. Hulle soek
wel helder lig. Sommige plante,
soos die Vredeslelie en Skoonma
se Tong, vaar goed in ruimtes met
minder lig.
- Plante wat goed doen in minder
lig en hou van humiditeit floreer
in ’n badkamer of ’n kombuis.
Spuit hulle gereeld nat met ’n
spuitbotteltjie.
- Gee jou plante een keer ’n maand
’n knippie Engelse sout vir voeding.
- As ’n plant goed doen op ’n plek,
moet dit nie skuif nie.
- Vee gereeld die blare van jou
huisplante met ’n klam lappie af.
Anin se keuse van die ses beste
binnenshuise plante:
- Vredeslelie (Peace Lilly) – die huisplant
vereis min lig en groei mooi in ’n
badkamer
- ZZ-plant (Zamioculcas zamiifolia)
– hulle is droogtebestand, kan in
donkerder vertrekke groei, en kan
’n bietjie ‘verwaarlosing’ oorleef
- Vioolblaarvy (Ficus lyrata of Fiddle Leaf
Fig Tree) – dié gewilde plant, wat in
’n paar jaar in ’n groot huisboom
kan groei, is ’n pragtige keuse. Dit
het egter ’n vertrek met helder
lig en gereelde water nodig. As jy
voel dat jou leefkamer ’n bietjie
drama nodig het, is dié boom die
antwoord.
- Anthurium - die aantreklike plant
is beskikbaar is verskeie kleure.
Hulle kan groei in verskillende
ligtoestande, maar sal beter aard in
helder, indirekte sonlig.
On the braai ... crayfish
Step up your braai game this Heritage
Day ... with crayfish. The meat grills
beautifully, and its natural richness
just gets better when drenched in a
wine-infused, buttery Beurre Blanc
sauce. A delicious warm-weather treat,
particularly when paired with a glass
of Fat bastard Chardonnay.
The wine This is the granddaddy (or
grandmammy, if you prefer) of all Fat
bastards. Inhale the scent of classic
ripe, rich butter and tropical fruit, taste
soft vanilla ... it’s a voluptuous wine
that’s fabulous to drink.
The crayfish braai Serves 8
(depending on size of crayfish tails)
You’ll need: 20 crayfish tails; melted
butter, for brushing; 150ml Fat
bastard Chardonnay; 60ml white wine
vinegar; 1 Tbsp shallots, finely minced;
225g fridge-cold butter, cut into small
cubes; salt and pepper, to taste
To serve: Fresh green salad and
lemon wedges
To make:
Prepare your braai.
For the sauce: Bring the Fat bastard
Chardonnay, white wine vinegar and
shallots to the boil. Reduce until you
have about two tablespoons of liquid
remaining. Then turn the heat down
as low as it can go, and add the cold
butter two to three little pieces at a
time, whisking constantly.
Continue to add the butter, whisking
with each addition until the sauce is
thick, smooth and glossy. Season to
taste, then strain into a bowl and keep
in a warm place or in a dish with warm,
not hot, water (heating the sauce too
much will cause it to split).
For the crayfish: Cut the crayfish tails in
half. Clean, remove the veins, rinse well
and pat dry with paper towel.
Brush the melted butter evenly over
the crayfish halves and braai them
flesh side down for about two minutes
and then flip and finish cooking for
another one to two minutes.
Remove crayfish from the braai and
plate family style on a platter.
Season with salt and pepper, and
drizzle with the Chardonnay Beurre
Blanc - serve the rest on the side
for dipping.
Squeeze over some fresh lemon juice
and plate alongside a big green salad.
ends 200-odd pages later with apple tart in a potjie. In between there’s recipe
after delicious recipe for cooking over the coals, without a chop in sight. Plenty
of inspiration taken from abroad - Greece, Italy, India, all with a local twist (after
all, ‘here in Africa we know how to make a fire and we know how to braai,’), but
Your will is an act of love
Light up your home
Lighting sets a mood Make sure you select the right lighting
by looking at form and function. When setting the mood,
you should consider the shapes of the light, the shadows,
the extent of light and of course the colour of the lamp
design. It all helps to create a specific atmosphere. Add more
atmosphere by adding candles to your room lighting.
Lighting gives dimension to your room In a room, we need
to have elements that create space and dimension. When we
include lamps and hanging pendants, these elements lend
interesting dimensions to your room.
Lighting provides interesting focus areas A room should
have various focus points that draw the eye and create
areas of interest. When we have a home that focuses on
different shades of neutral, these focus points become more
important. So then, you’ll be looking for texture, height, and
shades of the same colour.
Tips for selecting the right lighting
Look at heights Lighting at various heights creates
interesting focal points. But when you have an open plan
design, connecting two-to-three rooms, you should try to
keep the lighting from the roof the same height. You can
create dimensions by adding lamps and even candles for
interest.
Select the right colours: Create a core colour palette for your
home. This will help you to develop rooms that complement
each other ... you can then select lights that fall within your
chosen colour palette.
Keep it interesting, yet consistent While shapes, colours
and contours can add interesting features to your lighting, it’s
important to keep some consistency in either style, trend or
colour.
Choose the right bulbs Make sure your lighting is soft and
the right colour for your room. Do you like a white light, or do
you want to create a mood with warmer yellow lights? You
can also get interesting bulbs that become a feature element
to your light ... large and oversized bulbs with interesting
wiring which bring an element of design into your home.
Shades and form Keep in mind how the shape of the shade
or light will look in your room and where it will be placed.
Shapes can offer interesting features to your home. Find
lighting with different shapes and sizes to create a beautifully
designed space.
Leaving a legacy is about a lot more than you may think.
It has little to do with how much money you have or may leave behind
when you pass away. Leaving a legacy for your loved ones, by means
of a last will and testament, is really an act of love and caring. Without
one, your last wishes may end up as a guessing game and a source of
heartache and frustration.
David Thomson, Senior Legal Adviser: Sanlam Trust, says that by
leaving a will, you get to choose who inherits what, who winds up your
estate and who looks after your minor children – or even your pets.
“Also remember that it costs money to carry out a will, so apart from
drawing one up, you should also make sure there is enough money
in your bank account – or from your life insurance policies – to settle
outstanding debt, taxes, funeral costs and estate expenses.”
An executor such as Sanlam Trust can deal with the instructions of
a will efficiently and minimise any possible confusion. “It also helps
if your family is aware of where your original will is kept, what your
funeral preferences are, how things will be paid, and who to contact
at your place of employment in the event of your death,” says David
Thomson, Senior Legal Adviser: Sanlam Trust.
Here are seven non-negotiables when it comes to drafting a will:
1. Make sure your will is drawn up by a professional, like a financial
planner, or an organisation such as Sanlam Trust
2. Appoint an executor to take charge of winding up your affairs. This
person will, among other things, be responsible for reporting your
death to the High Court, collecting all your assets, closing bank
accounts, and opening an estate bank account, so ensure that you
appoint someone capable.
3. Be clear as to who should get what – from your immediate heirs to
charitable organisations
4. You may need to nominate a trustee (or trustees) to look after your
minor children should you have any
5. You will need to select two witnesses, older than 14 years old, who
are of sound mind and who are not beneficiaries in your will to initial
each page of your will in your presence, and to sign on the last page
(where your signature will also appear)
6. The original signed will must be kept in a safe place as this is the
only document that will be accepted by the master of the High
Court on your passing
7. Store your will safely. Some trust companies will keep their clients’
documents in their fireproof vaults for a small annual fee. Ensure
your nearest family or your financial planner knows where the
original document is kept.
“Ensure you leave a legacy of the person you were and how you lived.
Leaving a will could be the legacy you leave behind to ensure your
estate, no matter how big or small, benefits the loved ones you leave
behind,” says Thomson.
Confidence Rule 23:
A WILL MEANS YOU ALWAYS
HAVE THE FINAL SAY.
Known for their spectacular flowers, the genus Gladiolus is a highly
adapted and specialised plant, which is found throughout Africa,
Madagascar, Europe and the Middle East. South Africa is home to more
than half of the world’s gladioli species and the Western Cape is the heart
of species diversity. Saunders’ Field Guide to Gladioli of South Africa
is the first of its kind to offer a complete photographic record of the 166
species that occur in the region. Posthumously completed (tragically
Rod and Rachel Saunders’ work on the book was cut short when they
were abducted and murdered during a field trip in 2018), this is the
culmination of their long search to find and photograph every known
species of Gladiolus in South Africa. It includes detailed descriptions of
each species, along with info about ecology, pollinators, similar species
and conservation status; more than1,000 exquisite photos; up-to-date
distribution maps indicating where species have been recorded; and a
glossary of terms with illustrations unpacking difficult terminology. R420
Veggie of
the month:
Bush green beans are an easy,
highly productive crop for the home
gardener and especially for beginners.
They are an excellent source of vitamin
A and minerals as well as giving back to
the soil, being efficient nitrogen fixers. Bush
beans are also suitable for containers. They
grow and produce very quickly. Plant them
close together (they will support each
other). Sow successive crops, every
two to three weeks from August
to May for a non-stop supply.
Indoor plant of the month
Philodendron ‘Shangri-La Is a very compact version of the
traditional philodendron, with smaller lobed leaves and a dense,
bushy shape. The lush, glossy green leaves make it an attractive
home-office, house, and patio plant. Unlike its big daddy, it doesn’t
vine and keeps its compact form, growing 60 to 90cm high and
wide. It does best in a warm room, in a position that receives bright,
indirect light or some morning sun. As a low maintenance plant, it
only needs watering once a week, or less as the soil should dry out
moderately before watering. Fertilise lightly once a month in Spring
and Summer. Details: ballstraathof.co.za
GOLDEN
We’re planting … Bidens ‘Golden Empire’ for its masses of golden daisy-like
flowers that attract butterflies from mid-Spring through to mid-Autumn. The
compact bushy plants (25cm high and wide) are useful as filler plants for garden
beds, containers and hanging baskets. Bidens ‘Golden Empire’ grows in all types
of garden soil, in full sun. It is water wise and tolerant of urban pollution. It shows
off best when massed together. It combines well with other plants when used
in mixed containers and hanging baskets but needs more regular watering than
garden grown plants. The fine, bright green foliage is also attractive. It tends to
Bloem’s own home brewed elixir -
ADAM’S ALE
Leanne Holtzhausen’s small-batch kefir water, called Adam’s Ale, was born from
the need to help her baby daughter deal with allergies. Here Leanne tells the
backstory of how Adam’s Ale grew into the success it is today…
I grew up… in Bloemfontein. After
living in Cape Town and elsewhere for
a few years, my husband, Gertjan, and
I moved back to Bloemfontein in 2014.
Since then, we’ve became parents to
Hanna-Cosette (5) and Gertjan (3).
I was never very health conscious…
but when my husband and I started
planning a family, and especially when
I was pregnant with Hanna-Cosette,
we contemplated many of our choices
and actions, what we put in our bodies,
and what values we wanted to instill
in our children from a young age. In
2017, when my daughter was one year
old, she suffered from terrible allergies.
My husband looked for alternatives
to help her body fight back, which
did not include daily medication. He
started experimenting with fermented
foods, first milk kefir, and then water
kefir, after reading about the incredible
benefits. I was not fond of the taste of
water kefir and experimented on my
own. My goal from the start was that
any child should like the taste of water
kefir, especially since everything today
is so highly processed and sugar-laden.
That is where my passion project,
Adam’s Ale Water Kefir, was born.
Water kefir is… one of the easiest
cultured foods to introduce into a
child’s diet. It is sweet, bubbly, and full
of flavour, which makes it similar to
soda, but without all the extra nasty
ingredients.
Water kefir contains… bacteria and
yeast. The kefir grains feast on sugar
water, producing a beverage full of
friendly bacteria and yeast. In a second
fermentation, fruit, juice, or flavouring
is added to flavour the water kefir and
add natural carbonation, producing
a beverage that is like fruit-flavoured
soda, although not as sweet, and
completely natural. Compared to
other fermented beverages such as
kombucha, water kefir is less acidic,
giving it a milder flavour that is more
palatable for children. The sweetness of
water kefir is largely dependent on the
culturing time. The longer it cultures,
the more sugar the bacteria consume,
and the less sweet it will be.
Adam’s Ale means… ‘water’ based on
the presumption that the Bible’s first
man, Adam, had only water to drink
in the Garden of Eden. However, the
history of water kefir is not well known
and it’s hard to say how far back
mankind has been using these grains
because of a lack of recorded history;
but, it’s safe to say that it’s many
centuries. I imagine these crystals
culturing the water in the Garden of
Eden, and that this incredible probiotic
drink would have been enjoyed in the
Garden.
Water kefir is… loaded with valuable
enzymes, easily digestible sugars,
beneficial acids, vitamins and minerals.
Some store-bought probiotic foods
or supplements are beneficial but
they aren’t as potent and usually don’t
contain beneficial yeast.
Probiotics have been used to ease the
symptoms of… bloating, heartburn,
constipation and diarrhoea, and
gastrointestinal conditions; skin
conditions such as eczema; colds and
allergies; vaginal and urinary health
issues (it reduces the incidence of
thrush); oral health; and kefir may
also help reduce blood pressure and
cholesterol.
Today, Adam’s Ale Water Kefir
remains… a passionate hobby for me. I
brew it in small batches at home in my
free time, alongside my super helper
Sylvia Mahloko, who has assisted me
with it since day one.
Limited quantities are sold weekly…
at Emagenes at the Loch Logan
Waterfront and CoffeeTalks Café
in Ray Champion Street, Rayton,
Bloemfontein. The kefir water retails at
R59 for one litre and is available in four
flavours.
your child
We are all concerned about our children’s eating
habits at one point or another.
So how do we make the transition from milk to
enjoying various foods?
The World Health Organisation encourages breastfeeding for the first
six months of life, and thereafter the introduction of a variety of food is
recommended at different stages of a child’s growth and development.
We are encouraged to introduce both variety and texture to a baby’s
diet.
Studies have shown that fussy eating habits are often formed if
textured foods are not introduced early on in a baby’s life. Textured
foods, for example, can be a fruit or vegetable which is mashed with a
fork or available in a convenient pouch, such as Delish.
Research has indicated that 20% of babies were defined as being
fussy eaters in cases where textured or lumpy food was not introduced
between 6 and 9 months of age. In contrast, babies who were fed a
variety of textured foods were happy to explore different tastes and
enjoyed their food at mealtimes.
So how else can we encourage our baby or toddler to eat?
• Most children will refuse a type of food in the beginning, but one
needs to persevere. You often have to offer a food up to 10 times
before a child will accept it.
• Be relaxed. A stressed mom or dad can result in a fussy or stressed
child at mealtimes.
• Children are very busy and prefer playing instead of sitting and
eating, so keep meals small and mealtimes short.
• Encourage your child to self-feed, even though they might make a
mess.
• Often parents are worried that their child isn’t eating enough.
Children will never voluntarily starve themselves, unless they are ill.
• Healthy eating habits lead to a healthy body and is important to
avoid eating problems later on in life.
• Children mimic their parents’ behaviour and often a parent who is
deliberate about the food they eat, will translate into fussy eaters.
• Fruit mixed with cereal or yoghurt make great starter meals.
• If a child does not like a particular food, leave it for a few days, and
then try again.
Sleeping time
and your toddler
Text: Johnson & Johnsons Baby
Getting your toddler off to bed and
him or her sleeping peacefully can
often be a challenge. To ensure your
toddler gets the sleep needed to
be healthy and happy, stick to the
bedtime routine that eases him into
sleep while strengthening the bond
you share.
As your toddler starts becoming more
and more independent and doing so
many things for himself, it’s tempting
to think of him as beyond babyhood.
But keep in mind that he still has many
of the same needs he had as a baby.
He still needs a lot of attention, a lot
of cuddling and a lot of sleep. In fact,
toddlers need between 12 and 14
hours of sleep in total, usually 11 to
12 hours at night and another one to
three hours during the day.
Bedtime tips
While most toddlers have learnt to sleep through the night, changes and stressful
events such as switching from the crib to bed at too early an age, a trip or illness,
may cause temporary setbacks.
To ensure your toddler gets the rest and sleep he needs, you need to follow these
bedtime tips:
• Set a regular sleep schedule for napping and sleeping (avoid naptime in the
late afternoon)
• Establish a 20- to 45-minute night-time routine to help him wind down and
relax
• Provide a soothing surrounding that is dark, cool and quiet
• Your child should be drowsy but awake when going to bed
• Save his favourite night-time activity for last
Keep a night-time routine
A before-bed routine will help your toddler become sleepy and signals it is time to
relax and prepare for sleep. Make sure that you stay consistent and follow the same
pattern every evening. Your child will feel more relaxed if he knows what is coming
next. Also, make sure his bedtime routine is always heading in the same direction –
bed.
Money
habits
for children
Children are never too young to be taught good money
habits. In fact, the earlier we teach them about the ins and
outs of money, the healthier will the financial decisions be
that they make as adults.
Children are like sponges and absorb all the information that comes their way.
Most of your child’s habits, good or bad, are formed before they reach the age of
seven. That is why it is so important to instil good money habits from a young age.
Teach your children about money on a daily basis. Show them how you use
money to buy stuff. Show them the till slip and the change that you get back after
paying for your purchase. Let them become used to handling money, but very
importantly, keep it simple and stick to the basics.
Small kids usually believe that they can purchase all the toys in the store with a R10
note. So this is a good place to start teaching them how to budget. They need to
learn that the cash in their hand has a limited purchasing power. So they need to
plan how much they want to spend, and what they want to spend it on.
Usually your child will end up crying, as he or she can’t decide what to buy (the
choices on the shelves are just too overwhelming). This will be a great opportunity
for you to start teaching them how to save.
They can now purchase something from the store and save up some money to
purchase something else at a later stage. Now they will also have a goal to save
towards.
It is very important that you manage your kid’s need for immediate gratification.
As soon as they get money, they will have the need to spend it. I believe your
child should have three piggy banks. In one of them he or she will save for the
short term. The short-term piggy bank will help to satisfy their need for immediate
gratification. The money in this piggy bank can be withdrawn on a monthly basis,
and it can be spent on whatever your kid wants to spend it on.
The second piggy bank will be your medium-term savings bucket. Here you will
getitmagazine.co.za/bloemfontein
save for a longer period of time, and for
bigger goals or purchases. The money
in this piggy bank should not be
touched for at least 12 to 18 months.
The third piggy bank is for the long
term, the money in this piggy bank
must be left alone indefinitely. Time
will tell when withdrawals from the
third piggy bank are justified.
Of course these three piggy banks
must be financed from somewhere.
Teach your children that money is
earned through hard work or applying
some entrepreneurial skill, and that this
is the only way to get their piggy banks
filled with cash.
Dividing any cash earned in a 40/40/20
split between the three piggy banks
will be a good start, but one can also
split it differently from time to time
depending on how your child’s efforts
and discipline evolve.
Of course the piggy banks will have to
earn an “interest”, and you as the parent
will have to be the “interest” payer. Your
child will be encouraged to save even
more if he or she sees that their money
is becoming more by just lying in a
piggy bank.
But once again, be creative, and keep it
simple and practical.
‘ME TIME’ for mom
Step 1 – Cleanse your skin
Moisten your face and apply a small
amount of Purifying Neem Face Wash
to remove dirt, oil and make-up.
Gently work up lather, using a circular
motion. Massage for two minutes
before washing your face and patting
it dry.
Step 2 – Exfoliate
Using your fingers, rub Purifying Neem
Scrub in a circular motion on your face
and neck for two to three minutes
(avoid the eye area). Concentrate
on the areas around your nose and
forehead or if you have combination
skin. Work on the areas that tend to
be “greasy”. This removes dead skin,
blackheads, whiteheads, and deeply
embedded dirt. Wash your face and
pat it dry.
getitmagazine.co.za/bloemfontein
One of the key steps for mom to having radiant, younger
looking skin is to get rid of old, dry, and dead skin cells. Try
this Himalaya Herbals Pure Skin facial at home;
it is best suited for oily to combination skin types.
Step 3 – Steam
If you have an oily skin, steam your face
for five to seven minutes. It helps to
increase circulation in your face. It also
opens your pores so you can cleanse
away impurities.
However, you need to check the
temperature beforehand to avoid hot
water scalding your skin.
Step 4 – Apply a mask
Apply the Purifying Neem Mask evenly
all over your face and neck. Avoid the
areas around your eyes and mouth.
Allow the mask to dry for 10 to 15
minutes and remove it with a wet
sponge or towel.
Step 5 – Rinse
Rinse with cool water, then wipe entire
face with Purifying Neem Facial Wipes.
Step 6 – Moisturise
Apply a soothing moisturiser over your
face and neck, choose either Light
Hydrating Gel Day Cream, or Clear
Complexion Day Cream.
In this article, we answer your periodat-night
questions, discuss how to
beat night-time leaks and share top
conversations from the Lil-Lets Talk
community. Since there’s no reason
why you shouldn’t have quality shuteye,
even when you’re menstruating.
Why don’t I sleep well when I’m
having my period?
If you have cramps, sore breasts, are
bleeding and feeling off-colour, it’s no
wonder you’re not having the best
sleep of your life. Remember to drink
plenty of water during the day to
prevent dehydration caused by fluid
loss, and try some light stretching or
yoga before bedtime, which may ease
discomfort caused by your period.
Can hormones make me toss and
turn at night?
Totally! Fluctuating progesterone
and oestrogen levels are not only
responsible for your period, they’ll
also likely make you more restless and
less able to get a good night’s sleep.
Why? The level of progesterone in
your body drops before your period,
and since this can influence your body
temperature, it can also affect how
much rapid eye movement (REM)
sleep you’re getting.
For people with noticeable
premenstrual symptoms (PMS) less
melatonin can also make it difficult to
sleep through the night.
I’m tired all day but the instant I
actually want to sleep, I can’t.
You’re not imagining your low energy:
heavy bleeding can lead to low iron
levels, which can contribute to fatigue
and low moods during the day, and
conversely, overtiredness can then
affect the quality of your sleep at night.
That’s why it’s important to eat ironrich
foods like spinach, meat, fish and
legumes during your period. Speak to
your doctor about iron supplements if
your period is extremely heavy.
I have really bad period pain and
often wake up two to three times a
night. Any tips?
Heat is our number one go-to. Warm
up a hot water bottle (or two) and
sleep with it behind your back or
at your tummy, or try heat patches
(they’re adhesive and warm up pretty
quickly). If you’re into natural remedies
for period pain, try sipping on herbal
teas like chamomile, ginger and
getitmagazine.co.za/bloemfontein
Your definitive guide to
handling periods
at night
Night pads can help you sleep better. Period. Whether you’re
tossing and turning or lying in the foetal position, chances are
your sleep is affected when you’re having your period.
rooibos before bed: their anti-inflammatory properties may provide relief from
cramping.
I double up on underwear and wear tights for extra protection. But I still leak.
What can I do?
Stressing about spillage is no joke. If you’re a heavy bleeder, it’s even worse. To
combat this, start with your sanitary products: make sure that you’re using a
tampon or pad that’s the right absorbency for you and can contain your flow.
If you tend to soak through pads or tampons during the night, you might want to
try out our new SmartFit Maxi Thick Night pad, the longest pad in South Africa**.
This pad is specially designed to prevent night spills, thanks to its extra length,
wings and wide-shaped back.
But I should still lie on a towel and avoid sleeping on my back, right?
You should always do whatever makes you comfortable, but trust us, the new Maxi
Night Pad is designed to offer you extra protection against heavy bleeding and
night time movement.
The pad’s shape means it hugs you more at the back, which is where a lot of
menstruators tend to leak from, and it helps to prevent that getting-out-of-bed
spillage (we’ve all been there). We’re here to end the period stigma and the
nightmare of leaks. Trust us, the brand-new Lil-Lets Maxi Night pad is perfect for
sleepers who wriggle and those who tend to soak through their pads quite quickly.
So, you can starfish, snore and even hit snooze.
Lil-Lets Talk top tip: “Iron occurs in both meat and certain vegetables (such
as spinach and broccoli). Although the heme iron in meat is more easily
of iron.” - Megan
Help kids COPE
with the effects of Covid-19
“At Laager Tea4Kidz, the health and well-being of all South African children is a
priority, which is why we’ve sought the expert insight from counselling psychologist,
Kerry Salvesen, and dietician, Mbali Mapholi, for a holistic solution to safeguarding
children during this time.”
Despite outward appearances and talk
of resilience in children, the impact
of the Covid-19 pandemic will be felt
by every young person in some way,
and it’s important that this is both
acknowledged and addressed. Laager
Tea4Kidz is encouraging caregivers
to check in on the emotional wellbeing
of children. “Too often, we
overestimate our children’s ability
to simply bounce back from an
experience, and we miss the signs
that something is wrong,” explained
Tea4Kidz Marketing Manager, Candice
Sessions.
FIVE Tips to help children cope
1. Ease their daily anxiety
Salvesen, a highly experienced,
Westville-based counselling
psychologist specialising in child
psychology, explained that anxiety is
a natural response to unpredictable
environments, such as those brought
on by the pandemic.
“The level of anxiety in our community
has escalated and is feeding down
to our children,” she said. “We need
to really listen to our children and
acknowledge their feelings before
offering solutions. Routine and
predictability are key ingredients to
assist children with anxiety. Have some
boundaries that are non-negotiable
and have some that are negotiable.
getitmagazine.co.za/bloemfontein
Children thrive with boundaries and
feel safe and secure when boundaries
are established and maintained.”
2. Encourage exercise
Salvesen said one should not
underestimate the importance
of physical activity in children’s
development. “We need them to
exercise every day, whether it is formal
sports training or just playing outside.
Screen time has eaten into children’s
play and outdoor time, and it should
be carefully monitored and limited age
appropriately.”
3. Maintain friendships
While social distancing is a necessary
part of children’s current reality,
Salvesen reminds caregivers that
children are social beings, and
maintaining friendships is vital, with
play dates and parties less frequent.
“Find other ways to keep up their
friendships, whether it’s video calls,
letter writing or dropping off treats in
the post boxes of friends.”
4. Talk simply and with honesty
“Many children have lost loved ones
and been exposed to death for the first
time,” explained Salvesen. “Remember
that we cannot shield children from
these real and difficult emotions. Our
job is to walk with them through the
stages of grief and hold their hands
when needed. Speak in simple, truthful
language and make sure that their
basic needs are still being met during
the period of mourning.”
5. Maintain a healthy diet
Specialist dietician, Mapholi, has
years of experience in child-focused
nutrition, with a passion for getting
South Africa’s children into healthy
routines.
“What children eat and drink has an
impact on their moods and how they
manage day-to-day stressors and
anxiety.
“A diet rich in whole grains,
vegetables and fruits is a healthier
option than eating a lot of simple
carbohydrates found in processed
foods. Carbohydrate-rich foods and
drinks cause a sudden increase, and
then a quick drop in blood sugar
levels which may cause a child to feel
jittery, exacerbating underlying anxiety.
Children have small tummies so it is
crucial to not fill them up with sugarladen
food and drinks.”
Instead, she advises a balanced diet
and constant hydration in the form of
a drink like Tea4Kidz. This range has all
the benefits of Rooibos tea, including
antioxidants and improved overall
health, with a variety of great-tasting
flavours. It can be enjoyed hot, or cold
as an iced tea with a squeeze of honey
and some fresh fruit.
Adrift
on a houseboat
One of the most effective ways of relieving stress is to be close to water.
Could be a hotel at the seaside. Perhaps a country cottage overlooking a waterfall.
Our choice? A luxurious houseboat on Lake Jozini.
While many choose luxury lodges
close to rivers and waterholes or along
our beautiful coastlines, we loved the
idea of exploring the legendary Lake
Jozini, one of South Africa’s oldest
wildlife havens.
Apart from being a mecca for feisty
fishermen - it’s the only tiger fishing
destination in SA - it’s perfect for game
enthusiasts and bird watchers to
enjoy a special water safari that offers
viewing a host of cool water creatures
- from antelope to rhinos, crocodiles to
hippos, even ellies – from a whole new
vantage point.
A trip on one of the intimate 12 or
20-sleeper Shayamanzi Houseboats is
sundowners, is all ultra-comfy en-suite,
oak-pannelled cabins, is incredible
views and sensational sunrises and
sundowners on the deck.
It’s about listening for the distinctive
cry of the fish eagle or the grunt of a
lazy hippo while you relax in the large
jacuzzi on the sundeck at the stern of
the boat. About watching the sun set
over the Jozini Lake with the Lebombo
Mountains behind you. About
gathering at the bar for an exotic
cocktail at dusk, when the frogs and
cicadas add their voices to the night
time chorus.
It’s a break from the city where you can
get together with friends and swap
fishing stories (it was this big *stretches
arms wide*). A photographer’s dream
... it’s just one wonderful opportunity
after another to capture landscape
photographs – sunrises and sunsets,
of game that have strolled down for
a drink, of the incredible reflections in
the water. A good wide angle lens is a
good idea here so capture every inch
of the spectacle.
Who’s it good for? Romantic escapes,
it goes without saying, but also
retirement getaway ... older travellers
will find this an excellent option. Since
it’s small - Shayamanzi caters for a max
of 20 guests - it’s also a fab option
of private events ... pre-wedding
parties, birthday milestones and
smaller celebrations. Massive bonus ...
you won’t have to arrange anything
yourself, the team does it all for you,
from menu planning to activities and
games ... all you and your guests need
to do is sit back and enjoy the ride,
ensuring that the only headache that
you might have is on the morning after
the big celebration.
Talking menu planning, the meals
on-board are delicious, with loads
of options, and those with special
dietary requirements well catered
for. Generous, too... three meals a day,
endless teas and coffees, and late
afternoon snacks for those who’ve
worked up an appetite and can’t wait
for dinner!
Game watching from the main boat or
one of the smaller tender boats, sitting
and doing absolutely nothing (count
us in), sleep in or get up at the crack
of dawn to take in the sunrise ... it’s up
to you. 16 thousand hectares of open
water. 400 species of fish in the lake.
Exceptional wildlife. Heaven.
