In library science this organization pattern came into effect inthe year 1876 after the publication of Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC) by Melvil Dewey.The 23 rd edition of DDC has been published in the year 2011.Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to make a systematic analysis of the class 570 and itssubordinate classes from the 1 st edition to 23 rd edition of DDC.Research problem: Statement of problems of the study is to see whether there is any changeshave been made in the schedule under study to cover the subjects emerged out due to the rapiddevelopment of various subject fields.Objectives: Therefore, objectives of the present study is to measure the development of thesubject Biology and to see the treatment of subjects in different classes as well as to identifythe changes of terminology and nomenclature of the classes under Biological Sciences indifferent editions of DDC.Methodology: This article deals with the terminological changes, changes of nomenclatureand incorporation of the subjects under the class 570 from 1 st edition to 23 rd edition of DDC.For this, relevant portion of all the 23 editions of DDC has been collected either from theInternet Archive or from the print version. Necessary findings and recommendation ofresearch study will be made in view of the analysis of data.Findings: In different editions of DDC, nomenclatures of different classes have changedseveral times due to the development of the subjects. Panda & Jana: Alteration of Nomenclature of …IntroductionIn this living world biology is present from ancient tomodern times. The concept of biology raised in 19 thcentury. The biological sciences emerged from traditionsof medicine and natural history reaching back to ayurveda,ancient Egyptian medicine and the works of Aristotle andGalen in the ancient Greco-Roman world. This ancientwork was further developed in the Middle Ages, over 18 thand 19 th centuries Biological Sciences such as botany andzoology became increasingly professional scientificdisciplines. In the early 20 th century, the rediscovery ofMendel’s work led to the rapid development of genetics.In this way new disciplines developed rapidly.According to the development of the subject libraryscientists develop different library classification schemes.So, to capture different changes, development, andterminological changes in this discipline, classificationistsincorporate the same in library classification schemes.This paper shows the development of the subject as well astreatment and terminological changes based on differenteditions of Dewey Decimal Classification scheme.The Dewey Decimal Classification system is a proprietarylibrary classification system first published in the UnitedStates by Melvil Dewey in 1876.Literature ReviewIn this paper, literature review deals with the survey of theliterature on different aspects of the Dewey DecimalClassification in general and treatment of different subjectsparticularly subjects on biological sciences in particular.For this, literatures available in print and non-print mediaare collected and few of those literatures are presentedbelow.S. Basuki and A. S.Mulyani [2002] explored that theproblem of utilizing notation for classification on Islamand the notation given in very limited for thisdenomination. In this study they describe the effort madeby Indonesian and Islamic libraries to improve the classnumber 297 in different editions of DDC since 1973 to1987.B. T. Gangu and R. P. Rao [2008] discussed about problemof classifying the upcoming new subjects in DeweyDecimal Classification scheme 18 th edition and problemfaced by librarians and classification experts who have todeal with the limitation and insufficiency of the schemewhile handling the books dealing with new developmentsin human knowledge. They have tried to explore theproblems and suggest solutions to overcome theseproblems.Z. Niculescu [2009] explored the evolution of differenteditions of Dewey Decimal Classification from theperspective of updating the terminology, reallocating andexpanding the main and auxiliary structure of DeweyIndexing Language. This study present the comparativeanalysis of DDC editions and mark on improving theinformational offer, basic index terms, development andauxiliary notations.P. Tutu [2017] discussed about the treatment of PureSciences in Dewey Decimal Classification and ColonClassification. This paper indicates the advantages anddisadvantages of the schemes and tried to design a newscheme.A. T. Poffenberger [1917] discusses the inferiority of theDewey’s decimal system of classification. The studyemphasized the need for a new scheme to satisfy bothlogical demands of the classifier and the practical one ofthe psychologist.M. P. Satija [2013] described the history of the DDC sinceits first publication in 1876. This paper will review thefeatures and changes in all previous editions, inchronological order, detailing their respective editors.Finally the history and features of the abridged, school andthe electronic editions of the system were examined andhighlighted the DDC’s major contribution to the scienceand art of classification - proving that it is the mother of allmodern library classification systems.R. Sweeney [1983] discussed about the 19 th edition of theDDC. This study reviews the evolution of theclassification over the past thirty years, and indicates thelikely development in the 20 th edition and beyond.The study looks into the development between thefeasibility of using the UDC’s revised religion scheme as aframe work for an alternative view of 200 Religion in theDDC. L.C. Mcllwaine and J. C. Mifchell [2006] exploreda potential model for future revision and investigate adetailed mapping using Buddhism as a case study.Objectives of the studyThe objectives of the present study are:i) To analyze the development of the subjectBiology in the light of DDC scheme.ii) To find out the treatment of the subjects under theclass 570 and its sub-ordinate classes in DDCscheme.iii) To see the terminological changes of the subjectstreated under the classes under study.iv) To know the inclusion and exclusion of thesubjects in the main class 570 and other subordinateclasses under it.Scope and Methodology123https://lisrbu.wixsite.com/dlis/rbu-journal-of-lisThis article deals with the terminological changes, changesof nomenclature and incorporation of the subjects underthe class 570 from 1 st edition to 23 rd edition of DDC. A detail analysis of thetables has been made to find out required results.Data Analysis and InterpretationTo ascertain terminological changes of the subjects underthe class 570 in DDC and incorporation of differentsubjects under it, relevant data have been collected andorganized under different tables and those tables areanalyzed considering the objectives of the study asfollows:
