1 Changes of Nomenclatures andIncorporation of the Subjects of the class 570Table 1 shows the terminological changes and addition ofnew concepts with the subject Biology. It is found fromthe Table that the subject Biology has been treated underthe class 570 throughout all the editions of the DDC understudy. Due to imperceptible development of the subject,gradual development of different terminology, various newtopics were included within the domain of the subject. Though thesubject Archaeology has been treated under the class 571up to 16 th edition in the form of Prehistoric Archaeology orsimply Archaeology and which has been shown in Table2.Again, in 15 th edition, the class changed its dimensionand incorporates a broader subject field BiologicalSciences to represent the class and the subject Biology hasbeen treated under the class 574 (Table 2). In 16 th and 17 theditions of DDC a new subject field Anthropology hasbeen added within the main domain Biological Sciences.Though, the subject Biology has been separately treatedunder the class 574. But the treatment of thesubject Biology remains the same under the class 574 inthese three editions. But, in 21 st and in 22 nd edition thesubject has been treated as Life Sciences Biology andtreatment of the subject Biology under the class 574 isomitted. In 23 rd edition the class has been treated simply asBiology. So, it may be concluded that in its differenteditions of DDC from the 1 st edition to 23 rd edition, theclass 570 has been treated mostly as Biology, in someeditions it is either Biological Sciences or Life Sciences.Though, the subject Archaeology has been added with themain domain Biology from 10 th to 14 th editions.From the above discussion it seems that there is enoughconfusion as to which subject(s) should cover all thesubjects of the sub-classes under the class 570 and as aresult sometimes it is Biology, sometimes it is LifeSciences, Biological Sciences or other subjects likeArchaeology or Anthropology attached with the subjectBiology.Due to gradual development of different subjects as wellas changes of structure and scope of the subject Biology,terminology has been changed from time to time orsubjects has been attached with the subject Biology tocope of those subjects under the main class.However, changes of terminology of the subject Biologyand incorporation of subjects in its different editions ofDDC may be represented in the following manner:There is enough uniformity to treat subjects in the class571 throughout different editions of DDC under study.From 1 st edition to 16 th edition of DDC the class isrepresented by the subject Prehistoric Archaeology.Though, from 10 th edition to 14 th edition Archaeology wasadded with the main class 570. No subjects have beenincluded in this class from 17 th to 20 th editions. Physiologyand related subjects has been included in this class from21 st to 23 rd editions of DDCThe subject Ethnology has been treated under the class 572from 1 st edition to 14 th edition of DDC. Though,Anthropology was added with it from 3 rd edition to 14 thedition. In 15 th and 16 th editions the class was representedby the subject Anthropology only. Next four editions i.e.,from 17 th to 20 th editions the class was renamed as Humanraces and the last three editions under study the class wasrepresented as Biochemistry.

But from 15 thedition to 20 th edition the class was renamed as Physicalanthropology. But due to complexity of the subjects theclass was renamed as Special system in animals in 21 stedition and Specific physiological systems in animals in22 nd and in 23 rd edition.The class 574 was represented by Homologies from 1 stedition to 12 th edition of DDC. For the next two editions itwas renamed as Physiological and Structural biology. Butfrom 15 th edition to 20 th edition the class was representedby Biology as it was excluded from the main class 570 forthe renamed of the class as Biological sciences or LifeSciences. But from 21 st edition the class was unassigned asthe subject Biology was again added with the main class570.3 Changes of Nomenclatures andIncorporation of the Subjects under the Classesfrom 575 to 579The class 575 of DDC under study represents Evolutionand Species from its 1 st edition to 15 th edition. From 16 thedition to 17 th edition it again renamed as Organicevolution, where Genetics added with it from 18 th edition.But from 21 st edition nomenclature of the class is totallychanged to Specific parts of and physiological system inplants.In the 1 st edition of DDC the class 576 was represented byEmbryology and from 2 nd edition it was renamed as Originand beginning of life and continued up to 14 th edition.From 15 th edition to 20 th edition the class was representedby Microbiology.
