Saha & Hatua: Generalities Class (000)…IntroductionBased on Reason, Imagination & Memory DDC has tenmain classes in the first summary according to disciplinessuch as Sciences, Arts & Literature and History. Adiscipline provides a context for a subject. Masarat (2016)described that these Classes are also used for certainspecialized disciplines that deal with. It has been notifiedthat ‘000’ Class is defined by ‘Generalities’ (17ed - 21ed)Class which has accumulated with general topic e.g.encyclopaedia’s, newspaper, general periodicals.‘Generalities’ Class is also used for specialized disciplinesthat deals with knowledge and information, e.g., computerscience, library and information science, journalism (Nowidentifies as ‘Computer science, information & generalworks’). Each of the other main classes (100- 900)comprises a major discipline or group of relateddisciplines. Ranganathan (1963) declared ‘subject’ as anassumed ‘term’. According to Custer (1975), Dewey usedconcept ‘Instead’ of ‘facet’ which is found from 16 thedition. Knowledge represents to a subject has differentstructure depending upon the society. Subject has differentmeaning in various context like content, theme, and topic.Satija & Martínez-Ávila (2017) explained thatClassification provides knowledge structure in the MainClass that are arranged by ideological principal, socialprincipal, and scientific principal and divided bydiscipline.Literature ReviewThis literatures review tries to describe the updation ofvarious issues of the Dewey Decimal Classification for itsGeneral works to specific areas. Samdani (1989) discussedclassification scheme, its facets and changes made tovarious subjects divisions, such as television, data,processing, popular music, substance abuse, civil rightsand electronics in the 20 th edition. Khun (1999) suggestedthe need of few modifications which can be used optimallyto classify a newspaper collection. Comaromi & Satija(1988) explore the revision of the Dewey DecimalClassification which is based on the growth &development or relocating of knowledge or relocating ofknowledge that is revealed in a decade of publishing.Knudsen (1999) explained that the hierarchy isdisproportional since some division or section which istotally defined knowledge areas are some thoroughlycovered than others. The system reflects an Americanworld view and some numbers are too long. He alsosuggests that they key points are always arranged bysubject, never by region. Taylor (2006) described thatDDC system logical approach to a hierarchical category ofrecorded knowledge that makes sense to many people.Satija (2007) examines the history, management andtechnical aspects of the Dewey Decimal Classificationsystem (DDC) thoroughly in his book. But over time it hasbeen found that most of them have gained thecapacity to be treated as an independent subject or abroad class. This paper tried to study exhaustively tofind the treatment and growth of all the facets of 000Class.Therefore the specific problems identifies as- Which subclass or facets of 000 Class maybe considered as Subject? If they considered as subject then from whichdomain they should be belonged to?Objectives of the studyThe objectives of the present study is to measure thedevelopment of the entries in the ‘Computer science,information & general works’ Class (000) and to find outthe treatment of facets in other different classes as well asto identify the changes of terminology due to developmentof subjects under Generalities class in different editions ofDDC.To be precise, aims of this article are-1. To identify which of the new concepts have been addedover time to time in 000 Class.2. To identify which sub-class may be treated as subjectsin 000 Class4. To mapping of which of the facets became obsoleteover time from 000 Class.MethodologyThis is a Survey method used study of the subjectespecially 000 class of DDC 1 st to 23 rd edition. This articlemakes a portrait of the facet analysis with newterminological change and changes of nomenclature in the000 class. For this study data of 1 st to 20 th editions havebeen collected from the website of Internet Archive andthe data 21 st to 23 rd editions are collected from its printversion. To establishment and identify those as subject thedata have been compared with Sears List of SubjectHeading 21 st ed. This also compared with the coursestudies curriculum of NIRF top ten ranking universities.

It has changed itsnomenclature as “General Works prolegomena” in its 12 thedition -14th edition. In the editorial page it’s also mentionedthat this class can also be used for certain specializeddisciplines that deals with knowledge and Information.Data Collection:The Class 000 has made his journey from ‘General works’to ‘Computer science, information & general works’.Initially the facets of this class has formed with somegeneral works, however over the time more specificsubjects along with their related subject descriptors havebeen included in General works. The facets and theirrespective placement in 000 class of various editions havebeen shown in table 2 exhaustively. Some of the facets like‘Library and Information Science’, ‘Museology’,‘Journalism’, ‘Media Study’, ‘Manuscriptology’ etc.treated here as one of the sub-facets. However, now all ofthese facets are being treated as specific broader disciplinetaught in various academic institutions & also universities,and may belong to ‘Social Sciences’ or ‘Arts’ or‘Humanities’. But DDC kept these under 000 Class as sub-Class.
