perm
Return of the
with Chris Moody of Moodyhair
Naturally curly and wavy hair
is everywhere right now, with
a whole host of celebrities and
style icons showcasing their
curly girl style.
Everyone from Zendaya and Selena Gomez to
Blake Lively and Sarah Jessica Parker have been
embracing their natural curls. But with the right
maintenance, treatments and styling tools, women
of all ages and with any hair type can become part
of this new wave of curlfriends.
It’s true that you always dream of having hair
opposite to your natural locks. But if you already
have a natural wave or curl to your hair, put down
the straighteners and love your curls the way
they are. Talk to your stylist about managing
your curls and waves with moisturising products;
natural waves and curls work better when
properly hydrated.
If you have straighter hair and want to
experiment with warmth and movement, there are
so many ways to style your hair with hot tools such
as barrel tongs, wands and heated rollers which
can give you a whole new texture and finish to your
style with no permanent commitment. It all goes
away when you wash it.
For those wanting a more lasting effect, the
perm is making its way back into mainstream.
Gone are the days of the ‘80s frizz ball that still
haunts so many people’s dreams. The modern
perm is softer, more natural and often worn on
longer lengths or even blow dried and styled out to
add body and bounce to softer, finer hair.
Soft perming is an amazing way to change
up your hair texture and create a whole new look
that’s easy to care for. But before you twist things
up, there are some things you should know about
the perm.
Perming is not something that is commonly
taught in many hairdressing training centres these
days. It’s not a mandatory requirement anymore,
so make sure you seek out a stylist with plenty of
experience before you take the leap.
Perm is short for permanent and the effects
of this procedure can last for many months. If
your hair isn’t suitable, it’s important you have a
stylist that can tell you and knows what to do to
make sure everything is done correctly. Here at
Moodyhair we have been regularly perming hair for
over 50 years and our senior stylists have decades
of experience.
It’s important for hair to be in good condition
first, not heavily coloured or highlighted. The
technology and process for perming hasn’t
changed much over the years, but now results are
softer and gentler, and the hairstyles are longer
with softer layers that recreate a natural wave and
curl throughout the hair.
Softer, modern perms will take about three
hours to do and can last up to four months. The
softer the curl or wave the less time the curls will
last; a very small tight curl will last a long time, but
a big soft curl will drop out in a couple months.
Newly permed hair does take some
maintenance, and because it can’t be reversed it is
a long-term commitment until it grows out.
Whether natural or self (or stylist) made, then
embracing curls could be just the new start you’re
looking for in 2022.
