to try in 2022

The start of a new year
is an interesting time
and a lot of people use
it to reset, change their
habits and bring things
back to moderation.
After a festive season of drinking
port, sherry and warming red wines,
the last thing you are going to want to
imbibe is something heavy. With this
in mind, these are our three wines
that we recommend trying in 2022.
White: Lago Vinho Verde, NV,
Vinho Verde DOC, Portugal, 10%
abv, RRP: £9.50
Vinho Verde is known as a summer
drink, but it’s also the perfect winter
reset wine because it is a very light,
crisp and refreshing white wine. The
linguistically astute readers may have
noticed that the literal translation
of Vinho Verde is ‘green wine’. This
doesn’t mean the wine itself is green,
rather the wine is fresh.
This is because Vinho
Verde is bottled very
young and is intended
to be drunk young
(within one to two years
of production).
Expect a light-bodied
wine, full of tropical
fruit flavours and a
slight effervescence
to it. This wine sits at
10% abv, which makes
it ever so drinkable,
and you need not feel
guilty about having that
second (or third) glass.
Red: Odd Lot Sustainable Pinot
Noir, 2017, Monterrey, California,
13.5%, RRP: £9.99
One thing on everyone’s
conscience at the moment is the
effect that we’re having on the planet.
The wine industry, like all industries,
is trying to make its practices more
sustainable and environmentally
friendly. Odd Lot Pinot Noir was
bottled by using clean/renewable
energy; everything on site is powered
by wind turbines.
But not only is this a great wine
to try because of its environmental
practices, it’s also
a really refreshing
wine. Pinot Noir is a
thin-skinned grape
which produces
lighter-bodied yet
complex red wines.
Expect a mouthwatering
red, full of
light notes of red
cherry, red plum and
hints of raspberry.
The wonderful acidity
and very soft tannins
make this the perfect
wine for January.
Rose: Reh Kendermann
Kalkstein Pinot Noir Rosé, 2019,
Pfalz, Germany, RRP: £11.35
This German Pinot Noir Rosé
is delectably light, refreshing and
bursting with flavour. The limestone
(kalkstein) helps the grapes reach full
ripeness. This brings
out lovely mineral
qualities that are
complemented by
flavours of raspberry
and watermelon.
It’s really
expressive, yet light
and very drinkable.
Salads become
popular again in the
new year, so if you’re
drinking this and
want a lighter food
pairing then we would
recommend a goat’s
cheese salad with
pomegranate and a
balsamic glaze.
