Spalding School of Dance<br />
relocated to Mexborough Business<br />
Centre in November last year<br />
to benefit from the flexibility and<br />
security the centre offers.<br />
Run by former professional<br />
dancer, Helen Spalding, the dance<br />
school has been established for 16<br />
years and offers training in various<br />
dance styles from ballet, tap and<br />

Business Centre team, Helen has<br />
transformed two regular office<br />
spaces into two dance studios<br />
including one with mirrors, ballet<br />
barres and a soft sprung floor.<br />
With past Spalding students<br />
having gone on to train at Royal<br />
Ballet and English National Ballet<br />
schools, and the three teachers<br />
all having been with the dance<br />
school from toddlers, the new<br />
studios at Mexborough Business<br />
Centre are setting the stage for<br />
more opportunities for children and<br />
young people in the area.<br />
“It’s a lovely building with<br />
adequate space and the secure<br />
location means we can continue to<br />
put the safety of our students first.<br />
We teach every weeknight plus all<br />
day Saturday and most Sundays<br />
when we’re preparing for festivals<br />
or shows, so being able to access<br />
the building at times convenient to<br />
us is great. The on-site café has<br />
been a great bonus for parents<br />
waiting for their children on a<br />
Saturday,” Helen says.<br />
And while parents or the<br />
public enjoy a bite to eat in the<br />
atrium, they’ll be watched over<br />
by one of Mexborough’s finest<br />
creations – the almighty Iron Man.<br />
A larger-than-life mural has been<br />
commissioned by one of the<br />
centre’s tenants, Doncaster Stories<br />
(National Literacy Trust), in homage<br />
to one of Mexborough Grammar’s<br />
most famous alumni, the poet<br />
Ted Hughes.<br />
The Iron Man is one of Hughes’<br />
most notable works and is still<br />
taught in schools today. The mural<br />
has been painted by The Iron<br />
Man’s most recent illustrator, Chris<br />
Mould. Chris has painted his gothic<br />
reimagining of the scrap metal giant<br />
numerous times, but this version<br />

five-times bigger than any previous<br />
version and took two days to paint<br />
using a spider lift platform to reach<br />
up to the high arch.<br />
The Iron Man mural is just one<br />
way the centre pays tribute to Ted<br />
Hughes. There is also a statue<br />
on the upper balcony, with new<br />
information boards about his life<br />
set to be installed and plans for<br />
a Ted Hughes trail around his<br />
old stomping ground already in<br />
the pipeline.<br />
With its fascinating academic<br />
history, an assembly of office and<br />
work spaces, plus grade-A facilities,<br />
