OUT & ABOUT
A fresh look
for Rotherham Market
Rotherham has been a market town for over 800
years when its original Royal Market Charter was
granted by King John in 1207.
Since then, it has constantly
evolved. From the initial wooden
market house that was once on
the site of the Town Hall, to the
Shambles where the Imperial
Buildings now stands, and the old
market hall on Domine Lane; the
current Centenary Market opened in
the early ‘70s.
But now, a new era for Rotherham
Market begins as enabling works
start on the ambitious regeneration
plan which forms a key part of the
Town Centre Masterplan.
In May last year, Rotherham
Council was awarded £12.6m from
the Future High Streets Fund to
transform the town centre, with the
markets playing an important role.
Plans for the redevelopment and repurposing
of the markets complex
include a relocated central library,
new community hub, extensive
public realm and improved links to
the town centre and college.
The outdated markets building
will be modernised, providing a new
and improved space for traders and
shoppers, with easier access for all.
Moving the library back into
the town centre provides an ideal
opportunity to create a community
hub in a more central location and
key area of the town.
Demolition works are due to start
imminently, although shoppers
will still be able to fully access the
markets complex.
With a six-day shopping
experience bringing together an
indoor market, covered outdoor
market and weekly street market,
you’re guaranteed to discover
something different.
