The festival takes place from<br />
Monday 4th to Friday 8th April at<br />
Emmanuel Church on Huddersfield<br />
Road, Barnsley. But the closing<br />
date for applications is Friday 4th<br />
February. There are over 100 music<br />
and drama classes to enter, and the<br />
full syllabus and application form<br />
can be found online.<br />
Open to children and young<br />
people aged four to 20, the festival<br />
began in 1946 by the Barnsley<br />
Co-Operative Society to provide a<br />
platform for young performers to<br />
gain confidence. It is still supported<br />
by the Co-Operative Group but is<br />
now run solely by volunteers.<br />
Entrants will be competing for<br />
over 60 trophies in everything from<br />
mime to monologues and mandolin.<br />
There are classes in orchestra,<br />
instrumental, speech performing,<br />
and singing, with entries for soloists,<br />
duets, or groups. All classes are<br />
judged by professional adjudicators.<br />
Each trophy winner will then be<br />
eligible to compete for one of six<br />
encouragement awards and two<br />
gold awards at the grand finale<br />
concert on the Friday night.<br />
All performers must be amateurs.<br />
