Convenient shopping
with a local conscience
Given the choice we’d all like to do more to shop
locally, but sometimes life gets in the way and
we make a choice of convenience over social
conscience. But thanks to investment by Barnsley
Council, there is a new online shopping initiative
that makes supporting independent businesses in
the town easier than ever before.
This year, shop locally with Click
& Collect Barnsley, a new project
aimed at encouraging the people
and businesses of Barnsley to adapt
to the changing retail environment.
Following the installation of
new collection lockers in Barnsley
Markets and collection hubs set
up at principal libraries across the
borough, you’ll now be able to order
a wide range of items including fresh
meat and vegetables etc, clothes,
jewellery and artwork to collect at a
day and time to suit you.
The initiative is powered by
ShopAppy which is an online
platform where independent retailers
can sell their products from one big
virtual superstore. This helps bring
the markets and high street together
in a one-stop-shop that makes
buying from Barnsley traders quick,
easy and convenient for shoppers.
While the ShopAppy scheme
has been running for some time,
Barnsley Council has recently
invested in the secure, contact-free
lockers that can be chilled, frozen or
ambient to encourage more traders
in the town to get involved.
Businesses benefit from an online
shop at the fraction of the cost of
creating their own e-commerce
website with no commission on
sales, while it allows customers
to cut queues and pick up their
purchases with no fuss. For those
reducing social contact, click and
collect provides a way to support
local businesses and collect at
quieter times.
Experience shopappiness by
knowing every penny you spend is
going back into the purses of people
and families in your communities.
Customers who use the Click
& Collect lockers or collection
hubs can also shop with a clean
conscience, helping Barnsley
work towards a greener shopping
environment. The independent
shops and market traders you
buy from are more likely to use
local suppliers, reducing the
environmental impact of the
products they sell compared to
national chains or supermarkets.
Also, being able to buy exactly what
you need when you need it helps
reduce food waste.
But most of all, using Click &
Collect Barnsley helps preserve the
town’s unique character. Although
it’s a form of online shopping,
the lockers and collection hubs
encourage people to come into the
town to collect their items where they
can find more amazing things right
on their doorstep.
There are currently 50 traders
signed up to the project, from
fishmongers to jewellers. The Click
& Collect lockers will be accessible
to any independent business, local
artist or Young Trader registered
with ShopAppy. Anybody wishing to

The Click & Collect lockers will be
located in Barnsley Markets on the
ground floor. Collection Hubs will
be located in the following libraries;
Cudworth, Goldthorpe, Hoyland,
Penistone, Royston, and Wombwell.
Both will be ready for customer
orders at the end of January.
