Trio of museums
now open at The Glass Works
For many years, Barnsley
Museums has brought the
rich heritage of Barnsley to
life across its fantastic visitor
attractions, passing the legacy
on to new generations.
And now they have added three new
museum experiences into the fold at the
striking Glass Works, thought to be the first
museum in Yorkshire to open in a purpose-built
leisure and shopping centre.
When planning for The Glass Works began
in 2015, the vision was always for it to be a
mixed-use scheme to attract new audiences
to Barnsley. Alongside vibrant retail and food
units, cultural cornerstones have also been
created to appeal to people of all ages.
The Glass Works is a hub for culture and
learning, with three state-of-the-art galleries
from Barnsley Museums and the stunning
Library @ The Light Box, proudly displaying
the moto ‘Barnsley’s fierce love holds you
forever in its heart’.
The bright and bold new sites provide more
opportunities for people from Barnsley and
beyond to explore the town’s past, present and
future right on their doorstep.
So, what exactly can you discover?
Barnsley Museums
@ The Glass Works
Get hands on with lots of interactive displays
which highlight what Barnsley has to offer.
The information boards and activities delve
into everything from heritage and Barnsley’s
inventors to green spaces and sport to artists
and authors.
There are lots of things for little hands to do,
with drawing stations, games and a mini library
making it a brilliant stop off for families visiting
Digital
@ The Glass Works
Across from the Discover gallery is the fun
and surprising Digital unit. Immerse yourself in
the 360-degree video of Barnsley where you’ll
be taken to various locations and beauty spots
around the borough.
There is also a VR art programme where you
can try this exciting and cutting-edge virtual
reality technology to create your very own 3D
masterpiece.
As a town, Barnsley has embraced the digital
age, with a new digital campus at DMC, a
SciTech hub for innovation at Barnsley College,
and a host of digital activities and exhibitions
hosted by the Barnsley Museums team.
Barnsley town centre. Recreate Barnsley’s
amazing architecture with building blocks, try
and identify different birds found in Barnsley
through their eggs and distinct calls, or have a
game on the official Barnsley FC table football.
If you’re looking for somewhere to visit in
the borough, there is even a day out generator.
The large touch-screen display will give you a
series of questions, such as whether you want
somewhere quiet or bustling, to discover or
explore, and will generate ideas based on your
answers.
Gallery
@ The Glass Works
On the other glazed boulevard is the Gallery
which is a changing exhibition space for
established and emerging artists. In 2022, it
will welcome exhibitions from Barnsley sculptor
Graham Ibbeson to a display all about LEGO.
But to launch the Gallery @ The Glass Works,
a body of work has been created to share the
plight of Barnsley people during the coronavirus
pandemic.
Based around glass bottles, which was one
of Barnsley’s main industries and after which
The Glass Works is named, the exhibition
incorporates messages in a bottle to reflect on
personal experiences and difficulties faced during
Covid-19. Add your own message in a bottle
where you can draw or write your thoughts to be
part of this community project.
Along with the graphic bottle motif printed
on the walls which was created by artist Patrick
Murphy, there are also other installations such as
a display of bottles arranged by James Brunt, a
quilt made by For The Love of Scrubs volunteers
who made over 25,000 scrubs, face masks and
wash bags for hospital and social care staff, and
Barnsley’s Fierce Love portraits of key workers by
James Mulkeen.
And before you leave, don’t forget to see the
poignant Covid memorial in The Glass Works
Square which was created by Graham Ibbeson
in memory of those we have lost and in tribute to
those who have helped keep us safe.
Barnsley Museums @ The Glass Works is
open Monday to Saturday 10am-5:30pm and
Sunday 10:30am-4:30pm
