A weekend dedicated to female musicians in<br />

Thursday 10th March (7pm)<br />

Hoylandswaine Arts Group present a talk<br />

by author, Sheila Binns, and Sarah Hardy, the<br />

Curator-Manager of the De Morgan Foundation,<br />

with be giving a talk about these celebrated<br />

Pre-Raphaelite artists who had connections to<br />

the area.<br />

Hoylandswaine Church was designed by<br />

architect WH Crossland. The church’s stainedglass<br />

East Window was designed by Edward<br />

Burne-Jones and the mural above it, called<br />

“The Ascendancy of Christ” was conceived and<br />

painted by John Roddam Spencer Stanhope<br />

of Cannon Hall, Cawthorne. It was painted over<br />

in the early 1960s because of water damage<br />

through the roof but was successfully uncovered<br />

and conserved in 2014.<br />

Roddam’s niece, Evelyn de Morgan,<br />

became one of the most impressive artists<br />

of a generation. Her husband William was a<br />

ceramicist known for his intricately detailed tiles.<br />

As part of International Women’s Day, one of<br />

the UK’s top female authors, Milly Johnson, will<br />

be giving a talk about her career and growing<br />

up in Barnsley. Milly has sold millions of copies<br />

of her books across the world, but she also<br />

champions women and the importance of<br />

friendship and community. There will be a chance<br />

to purchase her latest novel, The Woman in the<br />

Middle, on the day with a book signing.<br />

Historian and Wentworth Castle volunteer,<br />

Jenny Rudd, will be giving a talk about pioneer<br />

Lady Mary Wortley Montagu who led a fascinating<br />

life and introduced the smallpox inoculation to<br />

Britain from Turkey.<br />
