A MESSAGE FROM THE GWSA
BOARD
Winter has its devotees, but there is something to be said for
spring with its new life, warmer weather, and flowers and trees
coming into leaf. The name April stems from a verb “to open”,
suitable for the emergence of many living things, including the
sweet pea and the daisy, which serve as this month’s flowers.
We are finally able to return with normal room capacity,
without requiring proof of vaccination and masks. We
recommend making personal decisions on what is best for
ourselves while considering those around us. As we learn to
co-exist with what remains a contagious virus, we should be
sensitive to comfort levels and health risks among our
colleagues. Some may wear protective masks, and some were
unable to receive vaccinations, or have compromised immune
systems. A high quality mask still provides protection against
the viruses that still surround us. It is wonderful to see our
friends again. This is what many have been waiting for!
The GWSA is thrilled to see members returning in increasing
numbers. Be sure to check out our many activity groups,
including new ones that recently launched. The schedule is
conveniently available on our website, and it is time to get
signed up in RecEnroll. Canoeing, walking, and golfing aren’t
far away! Remember to renew your membership at the desk if it
is time.
The technology centre is now updated with new computers,
monitors, printer, and projector, and a dedicated area for the
multi-camera video studio. You might want some help from the
new “tech team” to make best use for your activity groups! The
upgrades were completely funded through a New Horizons for
Seniors Grant.
The Travel Committee has two bus trips planned for April,
and more coming! Check out the details and sign up before they
are filled. A new ‘rug hooking’ group has launched for those
wanting to try something new. The restaurant, Bistro 683, is
now open daily from 8:30 to 3:00 and is open to the public, so
you can even bring a neighbour. Many agree that the lunch
specials offer amazing value! The menu is on the website and in
the Sentinel.
Mark your calendar for the “Seriously? Seniors?” event
happening on June 10 at the Evergreen Centre. There will be
demonstrations of many activities, exhibitions and sales, live
performances, raffles for fabulous prizes, a book sale, a euchre
tournament with prizes, and even a 50-50 draw! Details will be
updated on the website. This is your GWSA today!
In the fall, the Board of Directors received news from the United Way that there was no funding
for the CSS Move Well program. More recently, we learned further that funding for the remaining
Community Support Services would be dramatically reduced. The Board and staff are committed to
a transition plan through this year to ensure that major issues like food insecurity and isolation
continue to be addressed for the most vulnerable.
As always, we have a dedicated board of directors and hundreds of volunteers working hard for
our members! Be sure to come by and visit us often.
CSS Funding Update: March 2022
The Guelph Wellington Seniors Association works with the City of Guelph and agencies like the
United Way to offer diverse programs for seniors. As a non-profit association, we rely on available
funding sources and apply for numerous grants each year. While our GWSA activity groups and
programs are supported through membership dues and group fees, the Community Support
Services (CSS) are funded primarily through grants and donations.
In recent years, the United Way has been the main funder for our Community Support Services.
Last fall, we learned that the United Way had received applications for more than three times what
was available for them to allocate. The United Way made some difficult decisions, and invited the
GWSA to submit applications for all of our CSS programs, with the exception of the Move Well
program. Consequently, the Move Well funding program ended on March 31, 2022.
In February, the GWSA received further news that the United Way funding, including the
remaining CSS programs, would be reduced by 76%, effective April 1, 2022. This critically
impacts supports like our food insecurity and outreach programs.
We are disappointed, but understand that there is greater community need with fewer resources
due to the pandemic. Our volunteer Board of Directors respects the difficult decisions of the United
Way and appreciates the many years of support and funding they have been able to provide.
Although funding has diminished, our commitment to ensure the availability of programs
remains strong. Even with reduced funding, the GWSA Board of Directors has decided it will
continue to support the remaining Community Support Services programming until December 31,
2022, while staff and Board members explore transitioning those CSS programs to other
community support agencies or organizations.
The Board recognizes that it is accountable to our members to be fiscally responsible. At the
same time, we strive to source the best opportunities to grow the organization with dedication to our
strategic priorities.
As always, we will continue to work through the challenges as we adapt to changes and thrive.
Keeping you well informed is an important part of that commitment.
THE EDITOR’S PAGE
by Linda Green
April is known for beautiful spring weather, the
start of warmer weather, and right about the time
when the Easter bunny will make an appearance!
The smaller animals that hibernate for the winter in
the Northern Hemisphere usually start coming out of
their burrows in April. It is also the
month that the birds migrate north and
settle down for the summer to mate.
No one is sure how the month ended
up with its name, but we do know the
Romans named it “Aprillis.” The
etymology behind the word “April”
comes from the verb “aperire,” which
means “to open.” It’s commonly
believed that the word refers to the
season of trees and flowers begin to
“open” or bloom.
April is a great month for meteor showers. The
Lyrids reach their peak on the night of April 21–22,
2022, when you can expect to see an average of 10
meteors per hour in dark, clear skies between
midnight and dawn. Rarely, the Lyrids produce
surges of up to 100 meteors per hour.
Pink Moon: April’s Full Moon is traditionally
known as the Pink Moon because of the pink flowers
(Phlox subulata) that bloom in North America during
this time of year.
Black Moon: April 2022 has two New Moons: the
first on April 1, the second on April 30, 2022. The
second New Moon in a single calendar month is
known as a Black Moon, just as the
second Full Moon in a month is known
as a Blue Moon.
Of course, one of the most wellknown
dates of April, April Fool’s
Day, is an annual custom on April
1st consisting of practical jokes and
hoaxes. Jokesters often expose their
actions by shouting “April Fools!” at
the recipient. Mass media can be
involved in these pranks, which may
be revealed as such the following day.
As you can see, there’s more to April than just
April Fool’s Day, although that is definitely one of
the most fun days of the month!
And of course, as we all know, “April showers
bring May flowers,” so if the rain of April ever gets
you down, never forget the silver lining!
Writing Your Life Story
Are you interested in joining a new Activity Group to work together on this subject?
Many of us were isolated during the beginnings of the pandemic, and we looked for projects we could
work on to fill the hours, weeks, and months. My idea was to write my life story. My father and my sister
had both undertaken this task, so I felt almost obligated to make my contribution to our family archives.
I took a six-week on-line course, and spent many hours sorting reference material from diaries, scrapbooks,
and photo albums. Working on the project for a few hours most days, I eventually finished the
task.
Looking back, I think the most difficult part was getting started. Several people I have spoken to have
expressed an interest in “having a go” on their own life story, but where to begin?
Everyone’s life story is different, of course, and some of you may find the idea a bit intimidating.
However, I think we could achieve some measure of success if we approach this task in small steps,
working together.
If you are interested in following up on this idea, please let me know, and perhaps we can develop an
Activity Group within the GWSA, meeting weekly and sharing ideas. The GWSA requires information
regarding the level of interest in establishing such a group. If there are sufficient numbers, we will be able
to proceed.
If you would like more information and would like to submit your name as a “founding member” of
this new Group, please contact me directly. I look forward to hearing from you.
Traditional rug hooking is both an art & a craft
where rugs, wall hangings & many different types
of decorative and functional objects are made by
pulling loops of fabric or yarn through a stiff,
woven base such as burlap, linen or rug warp. The
loops are pulled through by using a crochet-type
hook that is mounted on a wooden handle. It is an
enjoyable, fun and very social hobby.
The Rug Hooking group meets Tuesdays, 12:00–
4:00 pm in Room 2 at the Evergreen Centre. New
participants are welcome!
Instructions on how you can register in the group
Fee Assistance in Recreation (FAIR)
The GWSA contributes each year to the
FAIR program to ensure that our GWSA
programs and those offered by the City of
Guelph remain accessible to everyone,
regardless of their financial situation. No
person should be excluded from programs
due to finances.
The Fee Assistance in Recreation Program
(FAIR) can be used to reduce membership
dues and program fees by as much as 80%. If
you would benefit from this support, or know
anyone who would like to join our activities
but has a tight budget, please access the links
below for more information and an
application form, Completed applications can
be left at the Evergreen Desk.
We try to be here for everyone, and this is a great way to encourage new people to participate!
Fee Assistance
If financial need is a barrier, financial support for membership and program fees is available
through the FAIR Program: https://guelph.ca/living/recreation/support-services/
Badminton
Our Badminton Club welcomes all,
from beginners to experienced and
competitive players. Join us as many
as 6 times a week for friendly, active
games and competition at two locations.
We play at the West End Community
Centre on Monday and
At the Evergreen Centre, play is on
Tuesday evening at 7 pm, Thursday
at 10 am, Friday at 10 am, and Sunday
afternoons at 1:30 pm.
We do our best to keep members
alerted of any changes to our times or
cancellations. Racquets are available
for short-term loan and players are
required to wear indoor court shoes.
Your membership fee covers participation
at both locations. If you are a
member of the GWSA, we allow 3
free visits to give you a chance to
discover if you are able and will enjoy
this very active sport. The yearly
fee is $60.00 and you must have an
up-to-date membership with GWSA
to be a member of our club.
For further information regarding
our activities and membership, contact
Bunka
Bunka embroidery is created by using
a unique combination of punch needle
and special silk-like rayon thread.
When completed, many pictures resemble
delicately shaded paintings. In
fact, the needle is held and operates
in much the same manner as an
artist’s brush or pencil. The Bunka
artist uses many different stitch techniques
in order to achieve the desired
effect of depth and interest, but unlike
other forms of needle art, there are no
knots to tie and mistakes are easily
corrected. This group is for all skill
levels and meets every Wednesday
from 9:15 a.m. to noon in Room 3.
Into Focus Photography
We are a friendly group of amateur
photographers with equipment ranging
from mobile phones and pointand-shoot
cameras to fancy DSLR
models. We share a common interest
in photography as a hobby and we
learn from each other. New members
are always welcome. Our regular
meetings are on the last Monday of
every month by Zoom.
If you are interested in joining, contact
Bill Adams at:
(olar57@gmail.com).
Pickleball
Pickleball is a sport in which four
players use solid paddles made of
wood or composite materials to hit a
perforated polymer ball over a net.
The sport shares features of other racquet
sports: the dimensions and layout
of a badminton court and a net
and rules similar to tennis, with a few
modifications.
This sport is for people of all ages
who are looking for some fun, laughter,
socialization and exercise. It’s
easy to learn, but can be challenging
for those with a competitive nature.
All levels of skill invited. Pickleball
equipment is provided.
(Continued on page 13)
(Continued from page 12)
Shuffleboard
Come on out and join our group. Enjoy
some gentle exercise, friendship
and fun. Membership is available to
all paid-up GWSA members for a
$10 fee every six months. Register
the first time you play. Beginners are
welcome and instruction is available.
The group plays Tuesdays and
Wednesdays from 1:30 to 3 p.m.
Silver Strummers
The ukulele orchestra is an unqualified
success story! There are
now 30 individuals who have joined
the Silver Strummers. We welcome
ALL skill levels, beginner through
advanced! We will provide you with
all the information you will need to
get started. If you would like to try
the universally accessible and friendly
instrument of the ukulele, please
contact Ann Sneyd at 519-830-6640.
Silvertones
The Silvertones Choir restarted their
bi-weekly in-person practices on February
4th in the GWSA Auditorium.
Our bi-weekly practices run from
1 to 4:30 pm and we are returning to
Room 3 starting in April. We are
pleased to have a new Accompanist
join us, which is a great relief to all
and especially to our Director who
had been both Director and Accompanist
for 2 years!
Our Director, Anne Sneyd, has
come up with a new list of songs, old
and new that the Choir will present
on June 10th of this year. This day
will be a combination Open House
and Silvertones 40th Anniversary
party (initially planned for
2021)! So, SAVE THE DATE
EVERYONE, you will not be
disappointed! Watch for:
“Seriously? Seniors?”
This is YOUR GWSA today.
Please contact Doreen Muir 519 -
831-8323 if you are interested in joining
our Choir.
Evergreen Snooker Club
The Evergreen Snooker Club is composed
of a group of active, friendly
players with skill levels covering the
full spectrum from learner/beginner
to accomplished player. If you are
interested in learning the game, or
have played in the past and want to
get back into it, please drop by the
Snooker Room. You will be assured a
warm welcome and a place to try
your hand at one of our three tables.
The Snooker Room is open weekdays
between 9:00 am and 4:00 pm and
any other time the Evergreen Centre
may be open.
The primary focus of the club is to
have fun, build friendships and socialize.
Your snooker skill level is
irrelevant, so don’t feel intimidated if
you are a beginner. Prospective members
may visit the club room up to
three times without charge to help
with their decision on whether to join.
While most of the current members
are men, there is a small group of
women who play regularly (typically
on Tuesday mornings), so ladies,
don’t be shy, give it a try.
Membership is available to all paid
-up members of the GWSA on payment
of the prescribed annual snooker
activity fee. The current fee of $70
(plus tax) buys you access to the
Snooker Room any time it is open
and to all the snooker you care to
play.
Texas Hold ’Em
(The Three Amigos)
Why not come out and have fun with
us? We are averaging about 16 players
a week. We are situated in the
Dining Room. We charge $2 per
week and pretty well all of that goes
back to the GWSA. We play Tuesdays
from 6:30 to 8:30 pm.
Each player starts off with $500 in
real casino chips, and, as we do not
play for money, we work on a point
system. The one with the most points
each week is the winner. We play
until there is only one player left or
8:30 pm comes, whichever is first.
We will gladly teach anyone who is
interested in playing. Just follow the
laughter to find us. We welcome everyone
who wants to play and enjoys
company.
We have quite a few ladies playing
at present and would always welcome
more. We do not want to become a
men’s club! Remember, you have to
be a member of the GWSA to play.
Thank you to Mike Rooke for his
excellent leadership for many years!
Watercolour Painters
The Evergreen Watercolour Painters
provides an opportunity for watercolour
painters to practise their hobby
along with others sharing the same
interest, while encouraging one another
and receiving information, ideas
and inspiration. While we do not offer
classes or lessons, we welcome
accomplished watercolour painters.
There is a small annual membership
fee and membership with the GWSA
is required. We meet in Room 2 from
12:30 to 4 p.m. on the 1st and 5th
Wednesday of the month, and from 9
a.m. to 4 p.m. on the third Wednesday.
Walking Club
Do you like to walk during the
spring, summer and fall? Do you like
to have company when you walk?
If so, joining the Walking Club is a
great way to exercise with lots of
fresh air, enjoy nature and beautiful
scenery and make new friends while
discovering the trails in the area.
Club’s 2022 walking season online
A VIEW FROM THE BOOK NOOK
Chris Fraser
The Book Nook — “A Lending Library”
We are now re-opened
Monday to Friday 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.
****
I hope you will now enjoy reading the magazines
we have on display in the library. These were
removed due to COVID-19, but are now in the
binders for you to enjoy looking at.
Here is an exciting thriller, “The Night She
Disappeared” by Lisa Jewell. Tallulah and Zach are
living with Tallulah’s mum after their son, Noah, is
born. Tallulah is attending college and has met a girl
called Scarlett who is a really popular girl. One night,
Tallulah and Zach go out to the local pub for dinner
and a few drinks, while Kim, Tallulah’s mum, looks
after Noah. After a while, Scarlett comes into the pub
and joins them at their table, and later invites them
and her friends back to her house for a pool party.
That is the night that changed everything: Tallulah
and Zach never return home. Kim finally contacts the
police to try to find her daughter. A year later, there
has been no new information on their whereabouts.
Sophie and Shaun move into a cottage on the
grounds of the school where Shaun has a new job as
head teacher. Their new home is on the edge of the
woods near the estate where the young couple
disappeared the year before. Sophie is a writer of
detective novels, and one day, when out for a walk
into the woods, she sees a cardboard sign that reads
“dig here”, so she gets a trowel and starts to dig and
finds something that could be a clue to the couple’s
disappearance, and so the case fires back up again.
This book is full of suspense and you won’t be able
to put it down, as you want to follow the trail to find
the missing couple. I hope you will enjoy reading
this book as much as I did.
Happy Reading,
SENIORS — AVOID FRAUDS
AND SCAMS
While all Canadians need to be alert and
aware when it comes to fraud, seniors are
especially vulnerable to fraudulent scams and
schemes. Financial fraud directed at seniors
has been on the rise in previous decades, and
new technology has given rise to many new
scams.
Why Seniors Face a Greater Risk
So why is it that seniors are more vulnerable to
fraud than younger Canadians? There are a few
reasons:
They often have significant sums of money in
savings and equity; and, they are less savvy when
it comes to newer technologies such as the internet
and smart phones.
More Canadians are retiring early and living
longer. This means that seniors are more often
alone with time available for reading mail, taking
phone calls, or responding to online deals or
offers.
With the increase in life expectancy and the cost
of living, there may be greater concern about
having enough money – when an easy moneymaking
solution is presented, it can appear very
attractive.
A tendency to be more trusting as well as less
mobile can make it easier for fraudsters with a
friendly face or voice to strike up a conversation
and access key information.
Statistically speaking, the types of financial
scams are more likely to be unreported, which
minimizes risk for the perpetrators. Seniors who
fall victim to these predators are at significant
financial risk, as they have neither the time nor the
resources to recoup major losses.
Don’t Be a Victim
The best way to avoid becoming a victim of one
of these scams is to be aware that they exist.
Seniors can be quite trusting, as many of us grew
up in a world free of the dangers that exist today.
Knowing about the risks empowers us to make
smarter decisions and avoid being taken advantage
of by unscrupulous criminals.
SOME TYPES OF FRAUD
Fraud can take many shapes, and fraudsters are
becoming more and more sophisticated with their
approach. Here are a few of the most common
types of fraud that seniors may be exposed to, with
ways to prevent it from happening to you or
someone you care about.
Identity Theft
Identity theft occurs when someone uses your
personal information – such as your name, social
insurance number, credit card number – without
your permission to access your money, obtain
passports, apply for loans or mortgages, apply for
government benefits and other crimes.
Ways to protect yourself: Identity theft can
happen anywhere – at your mailbox, by email,
over the phone, from personal documents you’ve
thrown away, or from your old computer hard
drive. To prevent identity theft, don’t throw away
paper bills and statements without first shredding
or cutting them up. Also, don’t give out personal
information unless you’re sure who you’re dealing
with. It’s also a smart idea to put a lock on your
outside mailbox.
Telephone Scams
There are many different types of schemes and
scams out there, that prey especially on seniors.
Telemarketing scams, fake charities and “too good
to be true” offers are some of the most common –
these fraudsters will ask you to send cash to collect
a prize, make a pledge or process a loan.
Ways to protect yourself: Never give money or
your credit card information to someone you don’t
know – even if they sound like they’re from an
established organization. Request additional
information to be sent to you, review it with
friends or family, or simply hang up if the whole
thing sounds fishy!
Credit Card Fraud
“Skimming” is one form of credit card fraud that
takes place when someone makes a counterfeit
copy or transcribes the numbers of your credit
card. This is commonly done at restaurants where
they have your card out of sight and can write
down the numbers. Credit Card fraud can also take
place if you’ve left your wallet or purse open
where someone can easily steal your card(s).
Ways to protect yourself: Recent introductions
in technology will also protect you – hand-held
card processing devices at restaurants mean that
you don’t have to leave your card unattended, and
Chip and PIN technology means you no longer
have to swipe the magnetic stripe on Point of Sale
devices. Just remember to protect your PIN!
Phishing Scams
Phishing is designed to trick you into disclosing
your personal or financial information. Often an
unsolicited email that “appears” to be from your
bank, asks you for confidential information,
claiming a computer glitch.
Ways to protect yourself: It’s important to know
that no bank or store will ever ask you for your
password via email, so never respond to these
requests. If you receive an email that has a sense
of urgency requesting personal information,
contact your bank to see if the email is legitimate.
Ponzi Schemes
A Ponzi scheme attracts investors by offering
guaranteed and unusually high returns, based on
short-term and often complex investments.
Returns, however, are paid to the initial investors
from the funds of subsequent investors – there is
never any actual profit earned. This scheme
requires a constant stream of new investors.
Ways to protect yourself: Beware of claims of
guaranteed investments with above average
returns. Ask to see written statements to see
underlying investment details, and do a
background check to see if the individual or group
who approached you is licensed to sell securities.
General Fraud Prevention Techniques
In addition to the protection measures listed above,
there are a few things you can do to reduce your
risk of becoming a victim of fraud:
• Use a secure computer or location to conduct
your banking. Memorize your PIN and don’t
share it with anyone. Your bank will never ask
you what it is.
• Routinely monitor your transactions so you can
quickly spot one that looks out of place.
• Be aware when using the ATM – don’t let
another customer distract you, even if they tell
you you’ve dropped something. Keep your
eyes on the machine and your card at all times.
If you suspect your accounts or identity have been
compromised, contact your bank immediately and
tell them what’s happened. They’ll know what
steps to take.
