Best Direction Hair Studio owner Judy Begg has aloveof<br />
hairdressing spanning manyyears.<br />
She,and RobynStockdale,who is renting achair in the studio,are<br />
excited by the future.<br />
Judy has owned the studio forthe past 27 years and seen many<br />
changes; but each change has been positive.<br />
She has worked and owned hair salons in New Zealand and<br />
Australia and still finds it arewarding career.<br />
One she is happytocontinue doing foralong time.<br />
‘‘Ourclientelle arereally lovely and friendly,and have become<br />
wonderful friends,’’she says.<br />
Judy startedher hairdressing apprenticehip aged 15, under Marg<br />
Barker in TheTriangle shopping centre in <strong>Ashburton</strong>.<br />
Her first jobasaqualified hairdresser wasworking in a‘‘little salon<br />
under the stairs of WelburnHouse’’ (nowthe siteofPaper Plus).<br />
AmovetoAustralia in the late-1970s,saw her perfect her craftin<br />
the tough Australian market working in abig salon with 10 other<br />
hairdressers.<br />
‘‘We did alot of competition work both in regional and national hair<br />
competitions,’’she says.<br />
Thereweremanysuccesses,including Salon of the Year at the<br />
Australian Nationals,inSydney.<br />
On Judy’s returntoNew Zealand with her young family,she bought<br />
Best Direction from founder Dean Kingan in 1993. It wasthen<br />
locatedatCreek Road shopping centre.<br />
Best Direction had been in the Creek Road shopping centre sinceit<br />
wasopened in the mid-1970s.<br />
Judy herself wastherefor 24 years beforerelocating Best Direction<br />
in late-2020 to its current modern, stand-alone premises on Allens<br />
Road,atthe AllentonShopping Centre.<br />
ThemovetoAllentonhas been the rightmove.<br />
‘‘It is agreat working spacefor Robynand myself,and the building<br />
has good lightand sun all day.’’<br />
Thenew facilities arewarmand modernand deceptively big inside;<br />
thereare eightchairs plus three baywash and mirroronboth sides<br />
of the room, with natural lighting opening up the space. Judy<br />
stocks Keune hair products and is looking forwardtowelcoming<br />
new and existing clients.<br />
