This delightful true-crime caper comes
bolstered by aterrific lead performance from
Jim Broadbent, rattling about the red-brick
terraces of early 1960s Newcastle. He plays
Kempton Bunton, wannabe playwright and
soapbox revolutionary, a man who prefers
ChekhovtoShakespearebecause he feels that
the Bard wrote too many plays about kings.
By night he’s sitting up in bed reading books
by George Orwell. Byday he’s fighting for the
commonman,trying to fightthe English class
system.Aninterestingman!
His poor wife is played by Helen Mirren,
mess left by her husband. Often welcoming
him home from jail.
It’s a quiet movie, very English and very
believable.
Something differentand very watchable.
Stockwater race to close
BY MICKJENSEN
AshburtonDistrict Council has
approved theclosure of astockwater
race in theLongbeachRoad/
Willowby area that was first
considered for closure nearlyfour
years ago.
The race is fedfrom ajunctionat
310Longbeach Road, and runs for a
totaldistance of 1.5km.
It often dries upfor two to three
weeks at atime andisnot seen as a
reliablesourceofstockwater.
Of the six affectedproperty owners,
fivehave consented to theclosure.
Areport recommendingthe closure
proceed was first considered at a
council meeting in July 2018.
Property owner Sheryland Hal
Stivens made apresentation at the
meetingexpressing their concerns for
theloss of bio diversity, freshwater
ecological and aesthetic values
should therace beclosed and the
decision wasmade to keep it open.
They also expressedtheir wish to
retain the historic water race to
provide drainage during big weather
events, to prevent flooding of land
androads.
Duetotheconcernsraised by the
Stivens,Aquatic Ecology Limited was
commissioned to undertakeafull
ecologicalassessmentofthe section
of race to be closed, andidentify
any ecological values and
recommendationsifrequired.
The assessment report
concluded theecologicalvalues
in theracewere low.
Sixrecommendations
included the relocationofany
fish found in therace should the
closure proceed.
beverage outlets including Joe’s
Garage, Sal’s Pizza and Coffee
Culturewith two more spaces to fill.
Themain building is completely
enclosed and Sally said they are
fitting out the ventilation system and
working on the entrance. ‘‘The
entrance wayiscomplex, getting that
closedinisquite alot of work, this is
all veryspecifictoKmart andwhat
they want.’’
An electric vehicle station will be
includedonsite with provisionfor
six vehicles.
The closure will also notimpact
detrimentally on drainage or storm
waterandthe affected parties will be
requestedtoleave the race as aswale.
Councillors Angus McKay and
RodgerLetham said agood ecological
report had been written anda
thoroughprocess had been followed
by council.
It was time to move on with the race
closure,bothsaid.
Councillor Leen Braam said he
thought it unfair to make adecision
without the Stivens beingatthe
meeting.
The couple had notbeen informed
by council thewater race closure was
to be discussed and he believed that
was unfair.
He voted against the closure
recommendedbycouncil staff and
was the only councillortodoso.
